I retired Outer Wilds. I really wanted to love the game. It’s so unique and clever but I just didn’t like the gameplay.

Naughty Bear - 1h Progress
I wanted to give it a chance, but it's a piece of crap...
Hellboy Web of Wyrd - 4h Progress
I made an exception for poor graphics and I tried the game for gameplay, the gameplay on PC is not really that great, it's better on consoles, the first time it seemed ok, but it's pretty simple and repetitive.
I did all the levels and after that they made me repeat them again, even to beat the boss again to move forward...I deleted this boring and repetitive game, a waste of time.
Wanted: Dead - 1h Progress
Look nice but is garbage...
Middle-Earth: Shadow of War - 9h Progress
I liked the first game and I wanted to give this one a chance too. I knew from the first game that it had a challenging gameplay but in this one they made it even more, and more annoying.
It also has a boring story and that made me give up to the game.
Star Wars: Bounty Hunter - 4h Progress
I tried to play it, but it has one of the crappiest controls ever made!

It's sad when game has good plot but the gameplay is lacking.

Agreed, I find it really hard to care about a narrative if it's not complemented with fun gameplay. It makes me question why it was a video game in the first place, and not a book or a visual novel.

My recent Retirement is Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora. I have Ubisoft+ and therefore tested the game. In my opinion, it has the most beautiful open world I have ever seen, but unfortunately, the story did not captivate me, and the gameplay was, in my opinion, only mediocre. The main weapon is a bow, and therefore I would have wished for the ability to proceed stealthily, as the game also offers some aspects for this, such as climbing trees etc. But as soon as you have killed an enemy, all other enemies are immediately alerted and know where you are. Unfortunately, the pathfinding was also not the best.

Agreed. Gameplay is so important. For most types of games great gameplay can overcome lackluster or nonexistent stories and bad art design. But a great story or great art design cannot make up for bad gameplay.

You'd be surprised by how many people are willing to overlook mediocre gameplay as long as the story is good lol. A lot of people just seem to hate the idea of actually playing a game.

I retired Outer Wilds too man for the same reason.
Pacific Drive - [20-25h]
Pretty sure I was within an couple hours of finishing but it started to get so repetitive I just couldnt go on another run through the same areas getting the same resources. Excellent game though otherwise.
SteamWorld Build - [5h]
Lost interest as there really wasnt any challenge. Just wait for enough resources to progress a little further. Repeat.
Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection - [5h]
Legend of a game pretty much.. never played any in the series as I only play on PC. Game just didnt stick. It was just Lost Legacy though? Guess I'll go back at some point and try Uncharted 4.

Glad I’m not the only person who couldn’t get into Outer Wilds.
Also, Uncharted 1-4 are definitely worth trying and I hope you enjoy them.

I recently retired Fear Effect 2 and DBZ Shin Budokai Another Road. Fear Effect 2 just felt too similar to the first one for me and I would probably continue playing for Wendee Lee's voice acting but I could watch the cutscenes on Youtube, I might go back to it, but I was just so bored because it barely offered any improvements to Fear Effect 1. I was like, "did I play all this before?" Why should I even play this game when I got back to the first one. Another reason is that I found exploration tedious, interacting with doors is fine but since everything is so low res, I can't tell what I am supposed to be interacting with. I might return to it, not sure.
DBZ Shin Budokai 2, I just found tedious, the story mode added too much crap that I don't care about, I just want to fight and move on to the next guy, not do some city defending and get into fights where I have to fight an opponent a dozen times to win.
I might take a break from playing emulated "retro" games for a while. I also didn't like Killer7 at all either which was another one I did and couldn't get to the end.

Had to retire Mario 64. Don’t get me wrong its a great game for its time and I respect the impact it had for future 3D platformers, but it hasn’t aged all that well unlike its predecessors. I didn’t mind the blocky graphics all that much, but the controls and camera were just painful.

I'm afraid I must give up on my replay of Medal of Honor: Airborne, which is a shame. I used to play the hell out of this game on console, but that was over a decade ago. I recently finished watching Band of Brothers and felt a need to play a good WW2 FPS, coupled with the fact that I currently have the EA Play subscription this seemed like a golden opportunity for some nostalgia.
So how does Medal of Honor: Airborne hold up? A lot worse than I thought from a 2007 game. The devs had this unique idea that you can't move while aiming down the sight and instead, the movement buttons change the extent of your lean while aiming down the sight. You can get used to it, but it still doesn't quite right. Also, for some weird reason, the camera just shakes so goddamn much from everything that I was getting kinda dizzy from playing the game. Out of curiosity, I booted up the first Call of Duty (a four year older game from 2003) and the movement was much better there, I would rather replay that.
All in all, the controls and game feel were just really awkward in Airborne.
Luckily for us, Medal of Honor: Airborne Redux exists. This mod revamps a lot from the base game. It fixes the shaky camera, you can move while aiming down the sight, it improves the enemy AI, and all around balances the game (it makes it a lot tougher though, even on easy). As great as this mod is, unfortunately for me, it also increases FOV. It zoomed out the game so much for me that I could barely see shit. And trying to fiddle with the .ini files to customize it just straight-up broke the mod. For others, this mod might work out great, and it is indeed an impressive piece of work, for me, however, it was just a differently uncomfortable gameplay experience.
And then there are the bugs. This game doesn't work well on modern systems. I had to employ a completely different workaround for that.
At this point, I spent hours trying to get the game into working order, fixing issues, and trying to finetune the gameplay. I spent more time doing this than actually playing the damn game! I've reached the point where I was like: Fuck it! A replay is not worth this much trouble!
A damn shame, I really liked this game forever ago, but it seems I better leave those pleasant memories in the past.

Apparently I use the 'retired' button differently. I retire games when I no longer own them. Is this wrong?

Retire usually means you stop playing a game before you beat it and have no plans to go back and finish it. If it's a physical game that you sold before beating it I suppose that also qualifies.

Then I use this tab completely differently.
I use retired for games that I no longer have (because I sold or borrowed them). So it is possible that I give a game both the completed and retired tabs.
I have a custom tab called pause for games that I have started and want to finish later.

Ahhh I sympathise. I spent a chunk of this game in the middle of it hating it and wanting to quit. in the end, I liked it according to my review..?? Perhaps the list of glitches and frustrations in the penultimate paragraph will sound familiar to you.

Yeah, I do recognize that there is a fun-ish game with interesting ideas under all that jank and less-than-good ideas, but the jank... That jank proved too much for me this time around.

I gave up on Turok for the N64. This one jump right before a save point in level 7 sapped my motivation.

Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs
I really enjoyed playing the first Amnesia game, because it was an experience of fun and horror. But, in this game i didnt have so much fun. I played for about 2 hours (almost half of game's lenght) and i realized that i was only opening doors, walking through an old house, opening and closing valves, so i decided to retire from this. Just not for me.

I'm playing the Bionic Commando 2009 game and boooooooooy I have not been so conflicted on a game in a long while, there is some good things about the game but a lot of bad to go along with it. I was almost considering retiring it but now I'm continuing it. I'll update this post on if I do in fact drop it.
EDIT: Yup, I dropped the game, this is one of those games where it clearly does have some things going for it but it's impossible to get through to odd design quirks and super annoying enemies, I wouldn't mind if the game didn't checkpoint so inconsistently but those Halo Hunter ripoff enemies piss me off like no tomorrow. The game LOVES to spawn them and they are never fun to fight. They are able to move around on the battlefield faster than you and get hit by them ONCE and you are at critical health on top of flying across the map and the only way to damage them is by having explosive weapons, do the area of effect whip attack or hitting them in the back, the last of which is impossible to do since they move very quickly.
I wanted to like this game, I really did but I give up.

To my own dismay I just added my very first retirement to my profile, Hades, after putting around 8.5 hours into it.
I don't think it's a "roguelikes aren't for me", I absolutely adore games like Risk of Rain 1 + 2 and FTL. I just have some gripes with the very repetitive combat system, every run feels almost the same even with all the different boons and weapons. I do appreciate the permanent upgrades with the mirror as well as the gift system, but at the end of the day every run has the same repetitive combat. Then I hit a brick wall attempting the Minotaur and Theseus fight a few times, not even coming close to victory, which was the final straw for my Hades experience. I'm aware it's a very popular game, it's just one of those games that really isn't for me. I'm not one to particularly play games for their story either, so I had a lot of difficulty finding the appeal.
