I had a lot of gaming time this month since I'm on a LOA at work to deal with my Seasonal Affective Disorder that happens every January and I feel very refreshed. This month started the year off great. All the games I played I enjoyed in some way or another, even the worst game wasn't completely terrible for reasons I'll get to.
Here's 5 Completions:
Return to Castle Wolfenstein (RTCW) - PC - 01/02 - 8/10
Half-Life: ESCAPE 2.0 - PC - 01/09 - 8.5/10
Aperture Desk Job - PC - 01/15 - 8/10
Delta Particles - PC - 01/17 - 8.5/10 - Best
Rogue Warrior - X360 - 01/23 - 5.5/10 - Worst
A lot of good completions this month, probably the best gaming month in terms of quality and entertainment I've had in quite a long time. And yes, Rogue Warrior even had some enjoyment to it. The brutal takedowns are some of the most graphic and violent I've seen in a game and had me howling in excitement every time good ol Dick "Fucking" Marcinko stabbed someone multiple times in the face. The one liners are hilariously vulgar and awful and got tons of laughs out of me, not to mention this could have been the ultimate so bad it's good game that doesn't often happen nowadays. Unfortunately, the performance on 360 is terrible mainly staying at 20 FPS most of the time, not to mention the guns aren't good to use, the lack of weapon variety is noticeable, the graphics are bland and the voice acting is poor, but it certainly functions and it's nice and short, so I have to give it credit where it's due.
Aperture Desk Job is the latest Valve game that came out three years ago and I'm glad I got to play it. It's an insanely inventive and oftentimes funny experience set in the earliest period of the Half-Life/Portal universe and even if you don't have a Steam Deck, you can use an Xbox Controller like I did but you'll be missing out on Gyroscope which isn't a big deal. Even though it's short, it's by far one of Valve's best titles to come out since the Golden Age of the company (1998-2013) with tons of interactivity from not just the controller but mouse and keyboard and microphone as well. It's by far the most impressive title I played this month and the game looks astonishing, but as said, it's short and I don't have much else to say about it other than it's a unique experience that should be tried out.
Return to Castle Wolfenstein I played on the RealRTCW mod. Apparently, there are options to disable things the mod makes default which would have made my experience a hell of a lot better, considering there is a HUB between missions where you'll hear probably the most hideously awful voice acting maybe ever recorded in mod history? Not to mention story wise it's redundant. The game itself though still holds up and the mod is great for getting widescreen support and up to date features like mod support. It's very immersive and the game doesn't take itself too seriously compared to later Wolfenstein titles. Gunplay is excellent and like any great FPS game feels very adventurous in it's levels. Very much recommended.
Finally, it was either between Half-Life: ESCAPE 2.0 or Delta Particles, two great mods for Half-Life. But in the end, Delta Particles took the cake. ESCAPE 2.0 is action packed throughout and is constantly exciting, but Delta Particles is more unique and original, taking the Resonance Cascade incident and showcasing it from the view of another competitor to Black Mesa (and it's not Aperture!). Even though the game ends on a sour note, I still think this is the best game I played all month. It's a total conversion so the guns, enemies and characters are all new and it makes for a refreshing mod for Half-Life fans. It's almost survival horror in the aspects of the combat situations but there's still the classic Half-Life experience awaiting you in this game. Also, Diana is now best girl. I absolutely had a fantastic time with the mod and I hope with the success there will be a continuation, because that ending wasn't good, so I hope the modder can continue to craft a new mod to continue the events of this game.
So cool news! I bought my sister and I a Meta Quest 3 to share and right now I'm playing through Serious Sam VR: The First Encounter at the moment. I'm also hoping to get more time into Forza Motorsport 3, while also starting to make some progress in Donkey Kong Country Returns HD. I'll also have to get back to Black Mesa, but that might have to wait. So far, I'm pretty happy right now with how things are going. See you all next month!

1/04 Dragon Quest II: Luminaries of the Legendary Line
1/11 AMID EVIL
1/15 Death Stranding: Directors Cut (Replay)
1/20 Silent Hill: Homecoming
1/22 Nioh (Replay - All DLC)
1/25 AMID EVIL: The Black Labyrinth
1/28 Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League
Pretty interesting month overall for my completions. I managed to wrap up quite a few replays from last month, while also completing a bunch of other crappy games. My favorite game this month was probably Amid Evil. Amid Evil is a super fun FPS game very reminiscent to Heretic and Hexen, and I honestly liked it more than both those respective series. The overall level design and gameplay was great, easily some of the best I have played in a newer boomer shooter. The worst game this month was a tie between Silent Hill: Homecoming and Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. Suicide Squad is probably the worst of the two games overall, as, despite a lot of garbage, there are at least a few cool things in Silent Hill: Homecoming such as the bosses, and some of the DNA it shares with the Silent Hill 2 Remake. Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is easily one of the worst games I have ever played and there is genuinely no redeeming factors to it as a game.

Only two games for me, and that would be Maskmaker and Kingdom Come Deliverence. Even though it’s only two, I’m glad it’s those ones. Maskmaker I never finished on my original playthrough because I got glitched about 80% of the way in, and KCD2 is coming out next week, so finished it just before the release of the sequel.
I am excited for February though. Got a RE2 Remake, Dishonoured, and Waltz of the Wizard almost done, so looking to finish those games up in the next week and get another 1-2 done later in February.

Just one for me, but a long, long, looong time resident in my backlog and that was The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. Great to finally have finished it.

12. Lego Star Wars: The Clone Wars - 6/10
13. Assassin's Creed 3: The Tyranny of King Washington - 6/10
Best: SH2 Remake, Convergence, CoD Black Ops 6 and Soul Calibur 2
Worst: Pretty much anything that isn't the above games outside of Super Star Wars and Soul Calibur 3.
Biggest Surprise: Super Star Wars
Middling month for me. Beat a number of games I thought were just "okay" and I dropped A LOT of games more than usual. I dropped games like G.I Joe Wrath of Cobra, Kill Knight, Son and Bone, Star Wars Jedi Starfighter and DBZ Buu's Fury. I'm really hoping next month fares better and it seems to be, I'm already enjoying games like Simpsons Hit and Run and my replay and Red Dead Revolver.
I also find it fascinating the mere existence of hitscan enemies gets many people into frenzy yet when games hardly has any hitscanners like Resistance Fall of Man and Red Dead Revolver, they tend to have vocal detractors. But hey, I guess it's okay to demonize hitscan enemies and then criticize the games that hardly feature them. Not even including the games with acclaim that has hitscan enemies like Uncharted, Gears of War, and the 7th gen CoD games before Ghosts.

Until Dawn was my favorite game of the month, my first 10/10 game in a long time! It’s closely followed by The Quarry and The Wolf Among Us. I also really enjoyed Overcooked 2 and Birth.
Honestly don’t think I played any bad games this month! My lowest rating went to Six Cats Under, but only because it’s so short. Everything else was a 7-8, so pretty good month all around!

January felt like a very slow month for me in terms of completions, but I ended up doing a decent amount. Overall average for me.
Jan 8th - Halo 3, 7/10
Jan 12th - Stardew Valley (perfection), 10/10
Jan 13th - Halo 3: ODST, 7.5/10
Jan 20th - Halo: Reach, 7.5/10
Jan 21st - Celeste, 9.5/10
Jan 25th - Halo 4, 7.5/10
Jan 25th - Halo: MCC, 8.5/10
Jan 30th - Halo 5: Guardians, 6.5/10
The best game from this month for me is Stardew Valley, I finally got perfection in a save file which I'm very happy about. I didn't think it possible but I'm actually burnt out on Stardew after that, so I'm giving it at least a couple months before I start any sort of modded playthroughs. But a good contender is Celeste, which is one of the greatest platformers I've ever played, the only blemish holding it back from being a 10/10 is the Mirror Temple which I just didn't enjoy at all, but everything else about it is great. The worst game was Halo 5, the gunplay is great and it's a very pretty game, but the campaign is horrible. The squad system is highly unnecessary, the story isn't very well written, and it overall just felt soulless. Honestly Halo 2 and 3 are blending together for me, but I do remember not particularly enjoying Halo 3, the story is just okay, and the combat is pretty flawed. The one thing holding Halo 3 above 5 is the more solid campaign. I'll also point toward my first retirement, Hades, but I wouldn't call it any worse than Halo 3 or 5 by any means, Hades just isn't for me and I had a lot of trouble seeing the appeal to it.
I expect February to have less completions for me, because Halo infinite is decently long, I'm currently playing FTL which will take me a long while to complete, and Tomb Raider IV-VI Remastered releases on the 14th which will consume a good amount of my free time in the 2nd half of the month.

Starting the year off with huge titles, I have completed 6 games this month
Baldur's Gate 3 - 10/10 - January 4th
Danganronpa S: Ultimate Summer Camp - 7/10 - January 8th
Indiana Jones and the Great Circle - 9/10 - January 10th
Streamer Life Simulator - 4/10 - January 13th
Before Your Eyes - 9/10 - January 14th
Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix - 10/10 - January 23rd
My favorite for this month would be Baldur's Gate 3, but I did play it mostly throughout December. Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix is probably my second favorite, and I just love the lore surrounding the game.
It's a very slow month, and quite busy as well.

I have finished only one game this January, strictly speaking, at least. It just so happened that my two neverending live-service games, Fate Grand/Order and Honkai: Star Rail, also released their newest story chapters.
Hearts of Iron 4 - My first crack at grand-strategy games but thankfully the game wasn't as impenetrable as I feared. What it offers can be extremely engaging and there's a huge amount of content in it. This game consumed me for over 100 hours.
Fate G/O: Lostbelt 7 - Nahui Mictlān - The final chapter of the Lostbelt saga, and it's good, but that's it. The final fight is pretty neat and the story of this world is engaging in itself but as a final chapter, it's quite underwhelming considering how many questions it leaves unanswered. I was also not a fan of a number of ways this chapter contributed to the overarching storyline. Comparing it to the previous chapter, the masterpiece that was Lostbelt 6, also doesn't do it any favors.
Honkai: Star Rail 3.0: Amphoreus - This was fun so far, but it's a bit early to judge. I enjoyed it so far but I'm still waiting for the narrative to really grab me.

On January ___ I beat [or retired] ___ and gave it a score of ___. I got a PS5 for Christmas and promptly signed up for a month of PS Plus, which all my completions before Astro’s Playroom are from. What a deal for $14.99! Then I burned through a few shorter Steam games. I don't anticipate having this many completions in a month again for a long time!

God of War was just totally epic. It is the first game I played on the PS5 (even though it’s a PS4 game), and that could have contributed to my liking it so much. I really, really enjoyed most of the others that I played this month too, with my next two favorites being Rogue Legacy 2 and Animal Well.
Worst
Monstrum didn’t land. It feels like a low-budget attempt at Alien: Isolation or something that just doesn’t hold a candle to better games in its genre.

January was a decent month in terms of games beaten, but I focused on shorter titles since I'm prepping for a board exam. I recently bought a steam deck, so that has given me access to some great pc titles so my library of games has grown. I have some in progress games that I didn't finish this month but will definitely finish in February.
01/01 - Balatro (PC) - What a way to start off the new year. Completed my first run, but I'll be coming back over time to take on different decks and challenges. Great game.
01/24 - Slash/Jump (PC) - Enjoyable, very short, free title on steam. I loved the platforming mechanic of using your sword to jump. It was a small project so there isn't any continuation planned.
01/24 - Milk inside a bag of milk inside a bag of milk (PC) - Great, short pc title. Interesting premise and style. Can't wait to play the sequel.
01/28 - Olli Olli (3DS) - Fun skateboarding platformer. I could appreciate the gameplay and I loved the music. However, it was a bit hard on my eyes and some of the timing for perfect grinds/landings felt off.
01/30 - Mario Hoops 3-on-3 (3DS) - I wanted to revisit (and finally complete) a game from my childhood. I remember playing this with my sister. I wish there was a sequel as I loved the gameplay, the music, and the stage decision. It definitely leant itself to DS gameplay and I wish that Nintendo/Square Enix did more with it.

A strong start to the year for me, especially compared to last year. I also beat Minagoroshi in Higurashi When They Cry.
January 5th - BoxBoxBoy! - 7h 23m - (Main+) 4/10 - Started January 9th 2024 - 362 Days Taken - Perfect cleared the 11 main worlds and the challenge world.
January 18th - Super Mario Bros. 2 - 6h 40m - (Main) 3/10 - Started January 17th - 1 Day Taken - Beat all the levels. Used save states.
January 25th - Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels - 5h 25m - (Main) 3/10 - Started January 23rd - 2 Days Taken - Beat the game, used save states and a bit of rewind.
Short TLDR of my review:
BoxBoxBoy! - Equally boring as the first game.
Super Mario Bros. 2 - Difficulty that is not much better than Lost Levels.
Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels - Just more of SMB 1, but harder.

My first month with no completions since March 2024 :( It's now been two months since I've beaten something. Ironically, the gaming blog I started took up so much of my time that I didn't get a chance to actually game. I'm 14 hours into Fall of Porcupine and 27 hours into Final Profit: A Shop RPG though so surely I've gotta be getting close to the end of something.

Did not play as many games as I thought I would this month, mostly because I became ill and also was busy with university but still definitely spent some time with games. Managed two completions, one replay and one game that had wanted to play for years. So 2025 started out rather chill, in contrast to 2024 where I played a ton of stuff.
Super Meat Boy - Jan 13
Rayman Origins - Jan 18
I started 2025 with going back to a game I had cleared on my Switch before I started tracking my playthroughs on this site, Super Meat Boy. Brutally difficult but very well designed platformer that I spent almost 20h on this newest playthrough. Most of that was spent with listening to things in the background, which I recommend if you would otherwise get too frustrated playing it. Decided to get A+ on all levels (including Dark Worlds) that was unlocked before the final boss, but then decided to stop because didn't feel motivated to touch the extra world or to get all the bandages for the time being. Later I finally finished the game I started over two months prior, Rayman Origins. Rayman Legends is one of my favourite games ever so I naturally always had intended to experience Origins too. besides what was already included in Legends. Its sequel definitely improves on the formula and I think it the level design and structure of the game is generally more interesting, but Rayman Origins is also a fantastic 2D platformer. Ended up getting 100% in the game, which PSN Profiles made me think would be a daunting challenge with its 8/10 difficulty ranking, but I didn't really struggle too much even with the time challenges and final level, though I played on Steam so no Platinum Trophy for me. Just a really good time in general and glad to have finally experienced it fully after all this time. I also started the process of getting the Platinum Trophy in Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep and has so far cleared the Main Story of Terra's campaign and most of Ventus' story, clearing everything 100% will be a struggle but I feel I will conquer the challenge. So February will be mainly focused on finishing Birth by Sleep, but I also started playing Mario Party 3 with friends which potentially could be finished in February or could take longer we have to see.

I've managed to fully compensate my lack of completed games last December. Most of them were started way earlier, though.
3rd - Atelier Ryza 2: Lost Legends & the Secret Fairy
6th - Soul Hackers 2
12th - Summon Night: Swordcraft Story 2
19th - Trials of Mana
20th - Terra Memoria
29th - Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom
Best: Swordcraft Story 2 is absolutely epic, a true hidden gem. I've played with retroachievements enabled, so the low difficulty wasn't a problem at all.
Worst: I don't get why people praise Trials of Mana. It has virtually no story, no interesting dungeons, and no in-depth combat. This "remake" shouldn't exist.

I beat 8 games this month which is an insane start to the year. It would've been 9, but I didn't get around to beating Crimson Skies until today.
1/2 Assassin's Creed (Xbox 360): 11:39 7/10
1/4 Balatro (PC-Steam) (Replay): 1:50 9/10 - BEST (if I counted replays)
1/8 Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood (Xbox 360): 12:23 6/10
1/9 Call of Juarez (PC-Steam): 7:30 7/10 - BEST
1/11 Assassin's Creed: Revelations (Xbox 360): 9:06 7/10
1/11 Assassin's Creed: Ezio Trilogy (Xbox 360): 33:31 7/10
1/17 Banjo-Kazooie (Xbox One): 13:26 6/10
1/24 Banjo-Tooie (Xbox One): 16:38 6/10 - WORST
Call of Juarez is hugely overshadowed by one of its sequels, Gunslinger, but it's still a pretty good game. Sure, some mechanics have aged badly like using motion controls for duels, the whip, and the durability system, but it's still a fun time. I think this game's got huge potential to be a great movie, but nobody's heard of it so that'll probably never happen. Reverend Ray was such a cool character. He starts off as a really intimidating villain, but then he has a character arc after the consequences of his thirst for revenge become clear. If you like Gunslinger or cowboys, definitely check this game out.
I wasn't really a big fan of Banjo-Kazooie to begin with, and this sequel is pretty much that but bigger and worse. The game actually starts out pretty good until the dinosaur world fucks everything up. The writing is also just a lot weaker in this game, most of the jokes are 4th-wall breaks which gets boring after a while.

Thanks everyone for sharing, it was nice to read through these. Might reply to a few later :)
11/01/ - 40k Mechanicus
Aside from the difficulty falling off sharply after acquiring some AoE weapons, it's a very good experience, with a stellar soundtrack and design to boot, despite the simple enemy models.
7.5/10
11/01 - Thank Goodness You're Here
Lived in UK for 10 years, and it really made me miss the intricacies of a small English town. I will never stop romanticizing living in one, despite originally living in London. Just too expensive to move back there with no family or connections that are millionaires.
8/10
13/01 - Mouthwashing
The gameplay is obviously nothing to write home about, but it's rare for me to enjoy such a dread filled story despite my favourite genre being horror. Great romp.
8/10
15/01 - Vividlope
This is it right here. This is how you push the boundaries of puzzle platformers further. With a combo of frutiger aero + Y2K to serve for its look, it never actually seems derivative of any inspiration it has, as it maintains its own appeal seamlessly. Top 5 personal GOTY contender.
9/10
17/01 - Singularity
Was looking for a 360/ps3 era FPS campaign that wasn't extremely generic. This hit the spot, and successfully made me feel like a walking tank while keeping it fun. Hard is the right difficulty choice though - normal is a cakewalk.
7/10
19/01 - Halo CE
Glad I finally got around to starting the MCC. Don't know how so many games fucked up grenades so bad when CE perfected them in 2001.
8/10
30/01 - Halo 2: Anniversary
More of the same and better. Story was a bit weird in terms of the way it presented itself. A bit disjointed if you will.
8.5/10
Vividlope was incredible and I urge everyone to play it - even if you have barely any interest in puzzle platformers ala Captain Toad, Bomberman, and many others.

Good to see another person giving me the +1 to go for the original Trials of Mana through co-op on my snes mini. Excited to go through Swordcraft Story 2 when I eventually cop an anbernic SP, when I eventually go travel through England for 3 weeks. I do have an n3dsxl but I'd seppuku if I lost the stylus, and I wanna keep it truly pocketable, with no fiddling around while moving in and out of public transport.
