Description

Part of my Franchise Quest, an attempt to play all of the games of some of the biggest gaming franchises or series. This one is for Final Fantasy, the Square Enix-developed series of iconic JRPGs with no connected story across numbered entries.

A surprisingly solid RPG with a convoluted plot involving time travel. Basic, but extremely effective, with satisfying progression and fittingly harrowing encounters! A pick-up-and-play style game that still holds up today. I recommend the Pixel Remaster.

The Pixel Remaster's Boost feature makes this game very playable and fun, but the leveling system is still horrifically flawed and a bad idea from the jump. However, its story of rebellion, corruption, and reunion is simple but surprisingly memorable!

The last FF title on NES brings some big improvements! Its Job system blows FFII out of the water, but the story is mediocre. The last dungeons, ignoring the difficulty spike, have some of my favorite settings and villains out of the FF games I've played.

FF's first SNES foray brings a dark and engaging plot and some beautiful graphics to the series for the first time, and it still holds up today! Recommended for fans of classic and modern JRPGs alike.

It's been a very long time since I played this, but I love this game! The story is hokey, but the theming is incredible and the characters are so endearing. It'll always be a favorite of mine.

A significant improvement over FFXIII in terms of gameplay, but not in story. The time travel mechanic is wonderful and the battles feel great, but the characters have no charisma, chemistry, or soul.

Again, LR:FFXIII takes the established gameplay loop and innovates on it again to make a game that feels damn good to play. The story is hard to follow, but at least the ending feels like a worthy conclusion to an epic trilogy.

A game that nails the road trip adventure vibe like nothing else before it! The story can often drag on and become confusing, but the friendships between the four lads really make the minute-to-minute gameplay feel fun and engaging. I enjoyed the DLC!
