I'm posting this early in case anyone has suggestions for challenges or changes, don't start until January 1st of 2021

Rules: Each game you play can only count toward one of the challenges on the list. No repeats. The goal is to play a variety of different games through the year, not see how many categories you can make one game fit under. Another case of spambots bringing an old discussion or idea back to the surface and reviving it. lol I like it.

So, are we supposed to choose and assign videogames to the categories in advance or can we just spontaneously decide what to play and add it to the category afterwards if it fits?

Let's just pretend that this post never happened and I wasn't running on 30 minutes of sleep when I wrote the original, shall we?

The way it has been done in the past is that each decides! You can even start with a set list and change stuff depending on your free time, or if you find a more fitting game later. I pretty much go with whatever xD

Ah okay.

But we can't start early. If you'd like, you can start a game in 2020 and finish it in 2021.

I feel like play a game by activision, capcom, and ubisoft are kind of boring personally.
Potential alternatives I thought of are "a game you played/saw a demo of" and "a game from/about a different culture".

Games like Ring Fit Adventure (with the Ring-Con), or Guitar Hero. I guess the definition could be pretty loose as well, to include even Kinect games (would the Kinect count as an accessory?).

Thanks, forgot about those games. Doesn't seem like there are many games that require accessories, especially if Kinect doesn't count. The only game I have that could work for that challenge is Just Dance 2014 on Xbox 360 using Kinect.

As I said in the other thread, I really like the idea, but I'm not entirely sure about the categories / execution here. I imagine we wouldn't do anything as intense as, say, MyAnimeList's Anime Watching Challenge with multiple tiers of difficulty and the like, but I do have some suggestions.

"1. A game you previously retired"

I'm not really a fan of this one when it isn't a tiered list or anything because a lot of people have a very small or no retired list, which just kinda leaves some people impossible to complete it. The idea of going back to something you didn't like has appeal, but IDK about this one.

"18. A game where you play as a dad
19. A game where you play as a mom"

While I get why these are seperate, I think combining them ("A game where you play as a parent", for example) would fairly similar results and open up some spots to some more interesting things.

"7. A game that requires an accessory"

If this is kept around it should better define an accessory (are my joycons an accessory? The Wiimote? The Wii Wheel?), but TBH given accessories can be expensive or hard to access (let alone games that REQUIRE it) that this could probably be changed to something more fun / interesting.

"11. A game that aged like a fine milk"

This seems like it is one that would only be able to be seen in retrospect, but it could open up some interesting things for people to put in so it feels like it might be fun to keep.

"15. A game made for babies/toddlers"

This feels like it isn't going to be fun for the vast majority of people who would run this challenge and IDK how interesting either, you could replace this with something better.

"27. A game that would make your parent(s) disappointed in you"

Feels a bit vague but could be funni.

"32. A time-sink (60+ hours)
33. A quickie (less than 1 hour)"

Is this time you took to complete or How Long to Beat average?

"40. An ancient game (40+ years)"

Considering how back 40+ years goes, I kinda wonder if that should be chopped for now (pre-NES only might be annoying to access and also IDK how interesting to many people) for different stuff. I'd probably just do 30+, though you could do 35+.

"6. A game that launched a genre (Metroid, Castlevania SOTN, Demon Souls)"

This might be a bit vague as-is (I'd say Dark Souls really launched it as a genre rather than Demon Souls even if Demon Souls came first, for example).

"16. A game about a food company/chain"

How many games actually fit this?

---

Anyway instead of just mentioning stuff like that, I thought I'd also offer up some potentially fun suggestions for this too (be it for anything mentioned above or in general):

- In general, genre-based challenges tend to be good for this kind of thing. They offer something anyone who has interest in a particular thing can always at least get one of (like platformers? You've got the platformer challenge down!), but also encourage people who might not be interested in some genres to try one out (Not into shooters? Well, find aaany to try and now it works for the challenge!). If you don't want to have five million categories, then grouping them into somewhat similar genres such as Adventure / Platforming or the like. You can use HTLB's genres or others.

- Giving some challenges based on rating can be pretty fun. An easy example is a challenge to complete a very highly rated game (say, 8.5 or higher on Metacritic, or even 9.0 or higher) and a challenge to complete one that isn't horribly low but still notably low (7.0 or lower on Metacritic). This could be based on critic score, fan score, or different categories for both.

Another fun option is to go by differences between critic/fan score to capture disconnects. For example, "A game with a user score 1.0 or more than the critic score" for games that might be cult classics or have more fan appeal than critic appeal, and "A game with a critic score 1.0 or more than the user score" for games more of a hit with the the people who review games a ton than the fans who played them. Kind of a new way to look at stuff, might snag games you never thought of but are interesting, it's just a fun kinda thing. Of course you don't have to use Metacritic but it's a popular and easy example. (You could use How Long to Beat scores for just high/low scores, for example!)

- Maybe something like "A game with X or less How Long to Beat completes when you completed it" or something would be fun? It'd help the site get some times for lesser known games and might inspire people to play some more obscure games in their backlog.

- "Complete a game exclusive to one console (excluding PC)" seems like it'd be fun as a challenge, I added the "excluding PC" clause because there's a lot of exclusives that go for one console + PC that would get cut out without excluding PC which just kinda feels bad when they're always considered console exclusives.

- "Complete a ROMhack / Fan Game" could be fun and at minimum there's a million Pokemon ROMhacks to go with.

- Developer/publisher challenges like the Capcom/Activision/Ubisoft ones tend to be good, but it'd probably be nice to mix in some smaller stuff or stuff with a bit more flavor too. Maybe games published by Devolver Digital? That's big enough people can find something they'll probably like, but not quite as huge as the others or as "standard" (tho all 3 as standard options are good imo). Bandai Namco would offer a very large library. There's plenty of options.

- Getting creative with titles, for example "A game with a one word title" would be interesting as it has many options yet at the same time makes you look at what you might consider very differently. Or games with very long titles. It also could be fun to go for, say, a game that is the third or longer entry in addition to the sequel entry as that feels like it opens funky options people don't think about as often.

- "Complete a randomly picked game" could be fun. In this case, presumably random from your backlog. Could use Random.org, but this one is a bit hard to set up so it might not be the best to do.

- A lot of these challenges have stuff like "Ask someone else in the challenge for a game (from your backlog)" or asking a moderator or the like. I dunno about setting that up here (small community for example, and you want to avoid people trolling) but it can be fun.

In general stuff that is creative or could be fun to explore but isn't necessarily ultra restrictive are my kinda thoughts. If I get any more I'll toss a post out!

EDIT: Oh, also, you could definitely do ones by age rating, although I'd avoid anything requiring pornography, and it could shut some people out, but stuff like "Play an E Rated Game" and "Play an M Rated Game" can be simply, open ended challenges.

"18. A game where you play as a dad
19. A game where you play as a mom"

I'd just say put them together and simplify it to "A game where you play a parent."

"15. A game made for babies/toddlers"
This feels like it isn't going to be fun for the vast majority of people who would run this challenge and IDK how interesting either, you could replace this with something better.

We could replace it with an educational game.

"16. A game about a food company/chain"
How many games actually fit this?

I mean, there are a lot of cooking and restaurant simulation games.

- "Complete a game exclusive to one console (excluding PC)"

Might be splitting hairs but I feel like the word console should be changed to platform. Android/iOS games should be an option for people who don't own other consoles and can't emulate.

- "Complete a ROMhack / Fan Game" could be fun and at minimum there's a million Pokemon ROMhacks to go with.

I love this one personally.

Oh, this one could be pretty fun! Though maybe you have to include a screenshot or something... We do have a random pick tool on the site, so it can work!

Maybe any of these could work?

- A game picked by another person (from your existing backlog)

- A game recommended to you by friends/family

- A borrowed game

- Complete a game or group of games for another forum challenge (game of the month, 4 on 4)

- A game that defies your expectations. (As in, you jumped in a game expecting one thing, but the game throws you another and you are like "I'm not even mad, that's amazing")

- A game you purchased/picked up on a whim.

--------

Also, maybe for bonus points you can play a series (or idk, 3-5 games on a series), or for doing a themed marathon (as in x games on y series, or x games that have this in common)

EDIT: thought of one more!

- Play a game that breaks the mold.

For example, when you think of FPSs you think of... Guns, and war, and stuff like that, right? Well, slime rancher is technically a FPS, and it is wholesome af...

Yeah your right, these should probably be combined.

"32. A time-sink (60+ hours)
33. A quickie (less than 1 hour)"

Is this time you took to complete or How Long to Beat average?

It's dependent on your time

"40. An ancient game (40+ years)"

Considering how back 40+ years goes, I kinda wonder if that should be chopped for now (pre-NES only might be annoying to access and also IDK how interesting to many people) for different stuff. I'd probably just do 30+, though you could do 35+.

I got the date for the NES's release wrong... whoops. I probably will turn this one into a 33+, 35+ is only 2 years after the NES's released and a lot of the good games released after those two years.

"16. A game about a food company/chain"

How many games actually fit this?

You'd be surprised

I think this one might not be accessible enough but it is a good idea.

The borrowed game one might not work because a lot of us don't talk to people or go outside.

- "Complete a randomly picked game" could be fun. In this case, presumably random from your backlog. Could use Random.org, but this one is a bit hard to set up so it might not be the best to do.

Yeah this one could work well, your likely to get quality because of the completions thresh hold.

- Play a game that breaks the mold.

Good idea!
