Updated 2 Weeks Ago

This game is old and it shows, but oh boy was it fun. There are so many innovative things for the time it was released (recoverable arrows, instakill headshots, interactive environment, hats flying away when shot...), but it is often achieved poorly.
The sneaking or parkour parts of the game with Billy were mostly annoying, but running around with Ray while dual-wielding 2 revolvers was straight fun. If only we could shoot corpses just to be sure we got them...
Game is short so definitely play it !

The shooting is fun and they try a lot of things that are pretty innovative for the time. They don't always execute it well though, mainly the platforming with the whip and the motion controls for the duels. Still, the story is great and the game is fun.Updated 1 Month Ago

Call of Juarez was a game that I really enjoyed, even though it had its flaws. The story pulled me in right from the start. Playing as both Billy Candle and Reverend Ray was a cool experience, letting me see the Wild West from two different angles. The setting felt authentic, and I loved the mix of action and stealth in the gameplay. However, the game was definitely buggy. There were moments when glitches and awkward animations took me out of the experience. It was frustrating at times, but considering when the game came out, I could overlook it. The bugs were annoying, but they didn’t ruin the fun for me.
Overall, Call of Juarez was a memorable experience. The story and atmosphere kept me hooked, and I’m glad I played it. It wasn’t perfect, but it was a solid and enjoyable journey through the Wild West.

Call of Juarez• First time playing
• Old West Shooter. Prequel to Bound Blood.
• I played Bound in Blood years ago, back when the multiplayer servers were still on.
• I’ve been curious about the first game and where the story goes, hence playing it.
• Call of Juarez is a mixed bag. It’s very ambitious but also is missing some fundamentals of game design.
• It’s ambitious because of its number of mechanics and its split story line.
• There’s a lot here, like physics objects and the leaning mechanic, that it almost makes it feel like an immersive sim. It’s only missing the RPG stats.
• The parallel story lines weave into each other beautifully. One character may see the other from the other side of the level or play the same level in a different way.
• Having some investment in the prequel, Bound in Blood, I was satisfied with how the story concluded here.
• Now for the bad stuff; Call of Juarez is like a car with a sweet paint job and nice engine, but the tires are going flat.
• For a game as linear as this, no one should be getting lost or confused on what to do. I’m kind of shocked on how a game can have an objective marker and yet I still didn’t know what I was supposed to do.
• A classic example would be the part where you’ll fall into the river. You’re suppose to swim to the left, but nothing communicates that. No ambient light, or sign or anything. I thought I was suppose to dodge the rocks but I just kept dyeing.
• Pathfinding is a serious problem, and it’s so basic that its surprising that they missed it.
• Also, the cut scenes are bad. They’re trying to do the Half-Life thing by keeping the perspective at the first-person, but they missed the point.
• Half-Life stays at the first-person perspective because you’re always in gameplay and you choose your own level of engagement.
• Call of Juarez has voices for their characters and you can’t see their expressions while in the cutscenes. You just hear them go on while looking at the wall or at the sky.
• Bound in Blood fixed this with multiple camera angles and a much more cinematic style.
• Lastly, there’s first-person platforming and it’s really bad. At least they tried but it still plays like butt. The lasso is contextual and finicky at best. There are ledge grabs, which means you’ll get a face full of rock every few minutes.
• Overall, I respect Call of Juarez despite its obvious flaws.

Visuals: 4/5 - (Dx10 Version) Pretty good looking for its age. Some animations look a bit janky, but overall solid.Performance: 4/5 - Aside from a few crashes when quick saving, it ran flawlessly. Had to change a value in the game files to play at more than 100hz.
Gameplay: 3.5/5 - Playing as two different characters was an interesting idea. Billy is agile and good at "platforming", as well as stealth. He can use a bow to kill enemies in stealth, and a rope for platforming. Ray on the other hand is a skilled marksman, who also wears armor, making him take more damage than billy. He also has an ability called concentration mode, which allows him to kill enemies in slow motion.
To summarize: Episodes where you play as ray are really fun, however the episodes where you play billy, can be a bit annoying. The game is also a bit clunky. Still pretty fun overall, gunplay is satisfying too.
Story: 4/5 - I dont wanna spoil it because it is quite good. Some of the acting feels a bit flat in the english version, but other than that it is quite interesting.
Overall: 3.5/5 (7/10)

Pros:- The gunplay can be fun & satisfying (though is of its time)
- I like the idea of the split story line of the two characters
- Voice acting is good
Cons:
- Its a very 'janky' game.
- You will replay sections of the game as the other character
- Some levels are ridiculously dark, I had to turn the brightness up
- Some very frustrating platforming sections, just doesn't feel good to play those
- Tutorial style levels halfway through the game completely ruined the flow of the game
- The horses are terrible to ride
I wouldn't really recommend this game, unless you are a massive fan of the Western genre or you want to play all of the 'Call of Juarez' series. It's not terrible by any means, there's just so many better games out there.

This game is old. It suffers some serious issues as a result. The game is buggy as hell, and you are often forced to replay sections due to the game breaking and creating an unavoidable failure state. Enemies spotting you in stealth through walls, getting thrown out of world at the end of cutscenes, etc. Sometimes that was fun, but not always. Despite this, I had a decent enough time playing with their somewhat ambitious mechanics at the time. The whip in particular is something I'm surprised nobody has replicated.Updated 1 Year Ago

Many years ago, when "Call of Juarez" came out, I owned a very weak computer, and when trying to play the game back in 2008 or so, I ran into such a janky performance that I stopped and uninstalled it.I was not sure if I wanted to pick it up again. It’s a 2006 first-person shooter, and such games don’t tend to age well.
Set in the Wild West, the game tells the story of Billy 'Candle' who returns home after spending two years unsuccessfully searching for gold. He goes back to visit his mum only to be wrongly accused of her murder and spends the game running and trying to prove his innocence. His pursuer is a local preacher, rumoured to be a retired gunslinger who found solace in god and is not afraid to use his gun to put his flock in line.
The game is broken into chapters where in each one you will play either Billy or Roy, reenacting the chase. There is no co-op here, although both see a glimpse of the other as a part of the story. The story itself is your typical Western stuff, but it's nice to sometimes play a game where the narrative is simple and unsophisticated.
I was actually impressed with the level design. This is a game from 2006 but has more character than many of the things we see today. You have sneaking sections that play well, horse riding on wide open spaces, climbing sequences that make you sick of height and enemy positioning that requires more than just brute firepower. The game also features your classic gunfight duals with Roy being able to use slow-mo when drawing his gun.
On the negative side, graphics look their age and the controls feel a bit "floaty" – taking time to register movement in a way that can cost you your life in key moments. Also, the whip sections, where you can grab a tree branch with your whip and swing across spaces, feel physically awkward and many times I found myself plummetting to my death from great heights instead of landing on the rock across.
Overall, even with its age showing, this is not a bad game, and if you can manage the old presentation, there is some fun to be had here.

This game is pretty good. The overall story is engaging and fun to experience. It feels like an adventure and it has a satisfying conclusion. However, it also starts out pretty rough and takes like 2 hours to get better. The featured characters, on the other hand, are hit or miss. There are 2 protagonists, Billy Candle and Reverend Ray and you alternate playing between the two. Billy Candle is an annoying teenager that whines a lot, though he does grow and becomes more likable as the story progresses, which is good. However, his voice acting is terrible, which really hurts his character. Reverend Ray, on the other hand, is an annoying preacher at first, but he also grows and becomes more likable as the story progresses. His voice acting is great and his actor Marc Alaimo (Gul Dukat in Star Trek Deep Space Nine) is somehow able to make bad writing sound good. This game is a FPS set in the wild west, so the weapon selection is pretty small. Plus, they’re all inaccurate and require frequent reloading (except the classic rifle). Even though this can lead to frustration, I’m fine with these design choices since they fit the setting of the game and because your enemies play by the same rules, particularly having to reload frequently. However, Billy and Ray have different types of levels. Billy’s levels are more about stealth and platforming, whereas Ray’s levels are mainly shooting galleries. Ray’s levels are infinitely more fun than Billy’s levels. In fact, Billy's levels aren't that fun in general. In his levels, the stealth doesn’t always work properly, but there are some parts where you're forced to stealth through. Also, the platforming is generally rough. There is a mechanic of using a whip to swing from trees, which is a cool concept, but the controls are wonky and I never got used to them. Thank goodness for quicksaving/quickloading.
Both characters have access to a mechanic called concentration mode, which slows down time and allows you to line up shots before unloading. Ray’s involves holstering his pistols and then drawing them (pressing the mouse buttons) and Billy’s happens every time you aim with a bow. Concentration mode is awesome and really fun to abuse as Ray and is pretty much mandatory to survive as Billy. Ray also has duels, which I’m glad were included, as the setting is the wild west so they should be in the game. However, the controls can be finicky and unresponsive during these segments, which was frustrating.
Overall, even with the game’s flaws, I still enjoyed it for the most part. On top of the good stuff I talked about above, the game is gorgeous for 2006 and the music is fantastic. However, the game is very poorly optimized on PC. The loading times are very long, even with an SSD, and there are frequent crashes. These problems, along with the issues I had with the gameplay, in particular Billy's levels, bring down the experience a lot. This game needed a lot more polish. Even so, I still would recommend playing it at least once.

Call of Juarez is a western themed FPS, developed by Techland for Windows PC, and published by Ubisoft in 2006. In 2007, this game was ported to Xbox 360, and that is the version I beat. CoJ's plot is interesting because the player plays the part of both the protagonist and the antagonist, via alternating episodes (missions). As Billy the player tries to clear their name of a crime they didn't commit. As Ray, the player tries to capture and kill Billy in vengeance. Ray's episodes tend to focus on pure FPS action, with the occasional physics puzzle. Billy's episodes often include large portions of platforming, whip swinging, and stealth segments.+Very impressive graphics for its time.
+Solid FPS shooting with a good ballistics model.
+Lots of variety to the mission designs and objectives.
+A palpable sense of exploration in often beautiful terrain.
+Above average writing.
-Can be sadistically punitive to the player sometimes.
-Uneven game design quality makes the experience hit and miss.
-Enemy AI is often unrealistically accurate (what are they cowboy Terminators?).
-Billy's missions can be tedious due to occasional forced stealth.
-Ray's missions can become repetitive after killing 80-100 outlaws.
My favorite part: Riding a horse way out to Eagle Mountain, and climbing its treacherously high cliffs to obtain an eagle feather.
My least favorite part: Fighting boring waves of baddies through a bland mine.
I first played Call of Juarez a few years ago, and ended up shelving it after three hours. That's because the first third of this game, is unfortunately the worst third. Thankfully I gave CoJ a second chance, and discovered that the deeper into the experience I got, the more interesting and varied it became. Now that I've beaten CoJ, I can say this is the best first person western FPS I've played. But CoJ is far from perfect, don't get me wrong. For every ingenious scenario and beautiful vista, there's an awfully designed scenario, with an unskippable cutscene you've seen way too many times, due to having to continue after a cruel battle keeps making you dead. However, the good stuff certainly outweighed the bad, and I'm glad I answered this call a second time.

Decent story, but the gameplay hasn't aged well at all. Platforming sections are atrocious, especially the whip-swinging, as is the fist-fighting and the dueling. The shooting sections are decent enough and the stealth is acceptable even if it feels a bit random at times whether someone will see you.Overall it just hasn't aged well in terms of gameplay, and this is if you can overlook the typical early 2000s graphics.

65% would be more accurate. It's a fun game with interesting ideas but with horrible execution in nearly every way. Ideas like stealth, a whip from which you can swing from objects, bow and arrow combat, weapon degradation it's all interesting and fits thematically but when, for example, the best way to fight is to systematically holster your weapon, hide and then wait for "concentration mode" to regen (which is thankfully quite fast) it feels a bit silly. First person platforming is as awkward as ever meaning you will most likely find yourself slipping off objects to your grizzly death. Other than that the voice acting is awful, but overall it's playable, if not a tad unforgiving in Hard Difficulty where you will get wrecked in 1 or 2 shots if you are not fast enough or just unlucky.Updated 10.5 Years Ago

Western fans are really going to enjoy Call of Juarez, a game not afraid to take chances and have fun with itself. The atmosphere is excellent, thanks to a great cinematic score and a great variety of gameplay including horses, dueling, stealth and flat-out action. While Call of Juarez isn't particularly great in any of these areas, you have to hand it to Techland for developing one of the most fun Westerns to date. The visuals are great at times, although textures and dark environments need to be improved. When you're finished with the brief-yet-engrossing single-player game, you'll enjoy the online multiplayer, thanks to some classic modes re-created with Old West aplomb.Updated 17.5 Years Ago
