Altaïr's story might have been the blueprint but Ezio's is the foundation of the franchise and has both the stellar setting and story telling to boost. The score is also an element that later becomes the red thread through all the different games.

Almost certainly the best of the Ubisoft game design formula, the quality of Assassin's Creed II retroactively diminishes somewhat due to its overuse in subsequent years. Still, AC II is an excellent title that incentivizes interaction with many of its open world elements and features a solid and enjoyable video game story. I really appreciated the increase of assassination tools and options over the previous game. Some of the open world elements are shallow and too simple, at least by today's standards, but overall AC II is a great title that is ultimately well worth experiencing.

This is my first AC game. I know the game before but I didn’t had the opportunity to play it. I did went with the Ezio collection in Nintendo Switch fully blindsided. I do not spoil myself of anything and didn’t search for any play through. Three words: What the fuck!, to quote Desmond. I was really immersed with the way the story was told. I really appreciated the lines and the voice acting, and the plot itself. It is an old game but I can really tell that it was well made.
I really like the setting, the environment, and the way you want to explore the map. There were times when you had to walk just to blend in with the crowd and not get caught by the guards and it doesn’t feel like frustrating at all. You can just walk and enjoy the road, immersed yourself in the 1400s world. Sometimes, I just walk and listen to people’s conversation. The little details.
Overall, awesome! On to the next AC game!

Some controls are not perfect, but the game is well made. You can't really miss any trophee, except one. The thing I really didn't like is the possibility to miss some "hidden room" in tombs that are accessible only once each. Hidden room are necessary to 100% the game so we should get more chances to discover them. I recommand looking for guides while exploring tombs as there can be multiples hidden room in each tombs.

Definitely still stands as the pinnacle of Assassin's Creed games. I still hate the controls yeeting you onto a random surface every 5 minutes but the story was quite worth the frustration. The completionist in me was quite agitated, though, especially since I tried contacting Ubisoft support to give me access to the final map that I had access to, but to no avail. My file will forever remain at 99.29% completion.

Overall, AC II is an amazing game.

I can't really grade it more than 80% tho, because of 2 main reasons:
Venice overstays its welcome, since you spend way too much time there and, although the city itself is beautiful, moving across the canals is somewhat annoying.
The only terrible part of the game is the second dlc chapter (segment 13), the Bonfire of Virtues.
That chapter is boring (aside from few dialogues), too long and extremely repetitive.
If I had the chance of skipping it I would do, especially because it doesn't really add much to the story compared to the Battle of Forlì (first dlc)

Assassin's Creed II - Review (90/100)

Assassin’s Creed II takes everything great about the original game and expands on it, delivering a masterpiece of storytelling, gameplay, and historical immersion. Set in Renaissance Italy, the game introduces players to Ezio Auditore da Firenze, one of the most beloved characters in gaming history, while refining the franchise’s core mechanics and world design.

Pros:

Captivating Story and Protagonist:
Ezio’s journey from a carefree young man to a master assassin is engaging and personal, filled with moments of tragedy, growth, and revenge. The overarching plot of the Templars vs. Assassins takes significant strides forward, blending historical intrigue with a touch of sci-fi.

Gorgeous Renaissance Setting:
The recreation of Renaissance Italy is breathtaking. Cities like Florence, Venice, and Forlì are brought to life with stunning architecture, vibrant streets, and rich historical detail. Climbing iconic landmarks like the Florence Cathedral and the Doge’s Palace is an absolute joy.

Improved Gameplay Mechanics:
The parkour system is smoother, making traversal across rooftops and cities more fluid. Combat is more dynamic with added weapons and counters, and stealth feels more rewarding thanks to expanded tools and options.

Variety in Missions:
Gone are the repetitive missions of the first game. Assassin’s Creed II offers diverse objectives, from high-stakes assassinations to thrilling chases and puzzle-solving tomb explorations. Each mission feels unique and meaningful.

Strong Character Interactions:
Ezio’s relationships with supporting characters like Leonardo da Vinci, who provides gadgets and humor, and his family, whose tragic fate drives the narrative, add emotional depth to the story.

Economic and Customization System:
The addition of a monetary system allows players to buy weapons, armor, and upgrades, as well as invest in the Auditore villa, which evolves over time. This adds a satisfying layer of progression and personalization.

Rich Historical Integration:
The game skillfully integrates real historical figures, like the Medici family and Rodrigo Borgia, into its narrative. The historical database entries add educational value without feeling intrusive.

Cons:

Occasional Clunky Controls:
While the parkour system is greatly improved, it’s not perfect. Ezio can sometimes leap in unintended directions or fail to grab ledges, leading to frustrating moments during intense chases or precise platforming sections.

Overreliance on Fetch Quests:
Some side missions and optional content, while interesting, rely too heavily on basic tasks like delivering items or collecting feathers, which can disrupt the narrative momentum.

Final Thoughts:

Assassin’s Creed II is a massive step forward for the franchise, refining its gameplay, expanding its world, and delivering a deeply personal and engaging story. Ezio’s charm, the rich historical setting, and the variety of activities make it a must-play for fans of action-adventure games and history alike. While not without its flaws, it remains one of the most beloved entries in the series.

Final Verdict: 90/100. A brilliant blend of history, action, and storytelling that cements Assassin’s Creed II as a cornerstone of the franchise and a timeless classic in gaming.

An epic story of family, vengeance and conspiracy set in the pristine, yet brutal, backdrop of a Renaissance Italy.

I played this game for the first time in 2016 on my xbox 360 and fell in love instantly! I played it after completing the first game in the series, and I was very much happily surprised of the improvement they had done to the second game compared to the first one. Don't get me wrong, Altaïr is a great character and I loved him, but Ezio really captured my heart, as well as all the other characters that were introduced in this game.

I also feel like Renaissance Italy is the perfect spot for an Assassin's Creed game. There is so much fun things to see and learn about, but also the villains of the story were all quite interesting. I've always had a soft spot for this game, but playing it again on steam just reminded me of how much I loved it.

In technical aspects, it's slightly clunky and hasn't aged really well, there were more than a few times where I almost threw my controller at the wall because Ezio decided to jump backwards of a tall building, causing desynchronization, rather than up or to the side where I wanted him to go.

Either way, it's still an awesome game and I 100% recommend everyone to get it. So much fun times with this game.

I've really tried to get into this game, but I just cant do it. I've tried 2 playthroughs, 1 of them 2 years ago and the other just recently. both got about 5 hours in before I dropped them. The combat is jank, the parkour is jank and the story has way too much filler in it and struggles to just get to the point. What did keep me engaged in those 5 hours was the amazing world design and I really enjoyed Ezio.

Although I really enjoyed my time with Assassin's Creed II, I still think it fumbles in finding a structure, it's still much more varied than AC1 and has much more fun content, but it suffers the same issues of once you've exhausted the novelty of each new objective, you kind of feel like you're going through the motions between the story missions

But on the topic of story missions, they're infinitely more narrative-driven than the first, story and cutscenes are served on a silver platter, and the story for the most part is solid, and pretty well paced, I'd say except for the ending. It's kinda the opposite of AC1 in that way, whereas AC1 is EXTREMELY back-loaded with its story, the frontend is kind of boring, and most of its best moments are in the final hours, AC2 is generally well paced for the entire game, but loses steam in the final hours, then has a big uptick right at the end for the final mission in Rome.

Ezio's arc and growth from silly little fella, to master assassin is fun and entertaining to witness, he's a much more interesting character than Altair in most ways I think. 1400s Italy is an awesome choice for a new setting, it gives a whole suite of historical figures to pull from, and it's massive bustling cities like Florence and Venice with absolutely massive crowds are just technical marvels for the time to gawk at, given that they were on the Xbox 360.

AC2 iterates on mechanics introduced in the first and cleans them up REALLY well, not necessarily to a point where I'd say it's a "perfect" sequel, but the ramp in quality in basically every facet of the game is immediately noticeable within the first 15 minutes of playing. Parkour is smoother, faster, more responsive. Combat is iterative of the first, but also grants more options, weapons, that make it all around more fun to engage with enemies than the first. But combat still is kind of carried by just playing a waiting game and going for instant-kill counters, it's just the fastest way to breeze through combat most of the time I feel. Bruisers mix it up a bit, but really only in the way of parrying then unarmed to steal their weapons.

It was a really nice revisit to the childhood fascination I had with this game when it was new, and that I still for the most part really enjoyed it.

I didn't like this at all. It's obviously a competently made game, being a Ubisoft game. But the game is such slop.

The story sucks. Terrible. Ezio, who is supposed to be the good guy, teams up with dregs of society to kill elites. You literally join up with prostitutes, homeless bums, thieves, etc. Just the worst of the worst. And you go around 1400s Italy killing Catholic elites one-by-one, culminating in killing the Pope in the Vatican. It's a disgrace of a video game and has convinced me to never play another Assassin's Creed, or Ubisoft at large, game again.

To top off the garbage story, if you read the codex entries, the Assassins, ever the good guys, even killed Hitler in WWII. Henry Ford and Hitler were Templar collaborators, and were stopped by the Assassins. This game sucks. This series sucks. Ubisoft should rot. People say their games are woke now have no idea. They played this slop and thought it was good. Ubisoft has been pumping unassuming people full of propaganda for decades.

J'aurais juste pas eu la foi de faire le platine parce-que bah c'est ridiculement dur quoi. Mais autrement merci infiniment Ubisoft.

Still holds up quite well all things considered. Heavily underperforms when compared to modern titles, but come on...

The story has its ups-and-downs, with a quite a few high and lows. In the end, certainly worth a run through if you're new to Assassin's Creed. The combat feels old and outdated, with no real intricacies or customization.

Gameplay is slightly clunky, but nothing I can't forgive when it comes to a 15 year old game. Assassin's Creed is still one of my favourite IPs, so I can always enjoy a bit of nostalgia. The DLC, which can't be skipped, feels very forced and detached from the main story, which breaks up the pace a bit.

Otherwise, still holds up relatively well, but graphics are definetely showing their age. Had a weird issue with the sound very randomly, and infrequently, cutting out for a couple seconds only to come back sped up. This seems to be a bug that has been around since the game's inception.

Modern controller support is practically non-existent, so the installation of the EaglePatchAC2 mod or the usage of X360CE is required if you prefer playing this title with a controller newer than an xbox 360 controller.

VERDICT:
Ah.... the memories are all coming back to me from this beloved game, I kinda dropped Assassins Creed after this one but i'm willing to give them all ago again but this one has got to be the strongest one out the lot, the story is gripping and the parkour is brilliant. I'm not too keen on the idea that the whole franchise is the same but i'd like to know the full story of Desmond so i'm going to stick this through.

The controls are a bit clunky is certain parts of the story which makes it a little harder to control but it's pretty easy to bare with, I wouldn't bother with collecting the chests and the feathers because honestly... it's a pointless activity.
Total Score = 94/100.

GAMEPLAY:
It is the second major installment in the Assassin's Creed series, a sequel to 2007's Assassin's Creed. The plot is set in a fictional history setting and follows the centuries-old struggle between the Assassins, who fight for peace with free will, and the Knights Templars, who desire peace through control. The framing story is set in the 21st century and follows Desmond Miles as he relives the genetic memories of his ancestor Ezio Auditore da Firenze.

The main narrative takes place at the height of the Renaissance in Italy during the 15th and early 16th century. Players can explore Florence, Venice, Tuscany and Forlì as they guide Ezio on a quest for vengeance against those responsible for betraying his family. The primary focus is to utilize the player's combat and stealth abilities, as Desmond begins to uncover the mysteries left behind by an ancient race known as the First Civilization in the hope of ending the conflict between the Assassins and Templars.
