More Banjo & Kazooie! Who could complain about that. And an even bigger world, with interconnected levels, lots of new moves and techniques to learn, fun boss battles, etc. just a great time.

Banjo Tooie is a much more expensive game than its predecessor, and that works out to its favor the majority of the time. My time with BT was filled with genuine curiosity, influencing my every move to try new things in an effort to collect all of the things.

Glitter Gulch Mine, Grunty Industries, Wytchyworld, and Terrydactlyland were my favorites of the 8 worlds. Each area was crafted with uniqueness in mind, keeping the experience fresh despite the similarities in what you were collecting. Puzzles were mostly intuitive, again allowing for that naturally curiousity to eventually find a solution (or realize you lack an ability and need to return later). The overall game loop of BT kept me positively engaged from puzzle to puzzle, world to world. If you're familiar with the structure of BK, you'll feel right at home.

BT is not however without some glaring flaws.

1. Transformation puzzles did become quite the time dump later on in the game, often requiring multiple back and forth trips to Mumbo or Wumba before being able to collect a Jiggy.
2. The Cloudtop level was an insane chore to bestow so late in the game. I found the level design on this level alone tedious as you must return to the middle area constantly to split up and try new paths (which are hopefully correct).
3. The final area is heavily padded content that leaves the game on a bit of a sour note. The quiz show returns from BK unfortunately, and takes up a ton of time for seemingly no other reason than to be an annoying throwback. The final boss fight mechanically isn't very fun, relying on the poor controls of the 1st person shooting mode for a large portion. Speaking of...
4. The 1st person shooting is extremely touchy and hard to control. This is really only a problem for some of the Jiggy mini games and the final fight. The Doom style mini games are generally okay, but everything else related is a chore.

Overall BT is a great collect-a-thon with a few flaws from a modern perspective. While it isn't winning me over to replace BK as my favorite of the series, there is a ton to enjoy in BT. 8/10

After about 25 hours, I’ve 100%-ed Banjo-Tooie, but at times, it felt even longer. As a collectathon, it’s a strong game with massive worlds and clever puzzles, but the heavy backtracking makes it a tougher experience than its predecessor.

The controls on Switch are frustrating—neither the camera nor the overall movement was improved. This became a real issue during the third race against the bird, which I only won thanks to a bug, and the final boss, which felt overly difficult due to clunky controls. The only real advantage of the Switch version was the ability to save anywhere.

Grant Kirkhope’s soundtrack is fantastic as always, though I still prefer Banjo-Kazooie’s music. I had a good time, but unlike its predecessor, I don’t see myself replaying it. With a proper remake that fixes its flaws, Banjo-Tooie could be much better.

Verdict: A solid collectathon with frustrating moments. Worth playing, but once is enough. 7/10

This game starts off really good... and then the dinosaurs show up. The game takes a drastic nose dive at world 5 and never recovers. It just becomes tedious as fuck when you combine the split pad, Wumba's transformations, and playing as Mumbo. The game is also super cryptic world 5 and beyond about where Jiggies are. I don't know if this is a me issue, but I could go like 3 hours without getting a Jiggy. The game could also seriously use a map, these worlds are massive. The game is worse than the first game, and I didn't like the first game to begin with.

I had a lot of fun playing this 3D platformer.

This was my first time playing it and it was better than I expected it to be. I had read that the open world format was a disservice to the game, but I think it worked out well. The teleports made traveling to each world convenient enough to where it didn't get annoying having to backtrack between levels.

The humor between the characters is is great. I really enjoyed all of the characters in the game that were unique to each world. I like the progression system of having to unlock new moves to access new areas of the level.

I wasn't that big of a fan of having to split up banjo and Kazooie using the split pads. I wish this could have been done at any point in time.

The levels were very distinct and different from banjo-Kazooie. This is a good thing in my opinion. Some of the levels were a bit confusing to navigate as a lot of the doors in the levels looked the same so you never really knew where you've already been.

Controlling mumbo was a pain because he couldn't grab onto any ledges and his attack was weak, but thankfully you didn't have to stay at him for long.

The wumbo transformations were fun and I always look forward to seeing what I would be transformed into.

The mini games were a lot of fun, although a bit rather basic and repetitive in the overall objective of getting the most points.

The first person shooter segments were fun, but the aiming wasn't as easy to control as I would like it to be.

I wish jinjo village was more populated and the actual jinjo huts had an actual purpose.

The boss battles were a lot of fun for a 3D platformer. My favorite boss battle was robot mumbo. The final boss battle was also a lot of fun.

Overall this was a fun game and a top tier 3D platformer. I'm glad that I finally had a chance to play through it all after all these years. I look forward to playing it again in a few years down the line.

Enjoyable game that brings more to the table as a sequel, what I didn't like was its backtracking. In it's defence someone said to see it as more of a metroid-vania rather than a level to collect all and move on, then it could lean better as a design decision. Banjo-Tooie is a good game and I enjoyed my time with it, just needs better flow by connecting itself better.

The first game was slightly overrated at the time, but this one's just broken at its core. The backtracking structure was a good idea (and a very bold one for a 3D platformer in 2000), but the execution is a pain, since the controls and camera, which already could be clunky in Banjo 1, hasn't really improve in the meantime. I don't know for the XBox version, maybe it had been properly remastered and corrected, but the original N64 one is tough and boring, with lot of things to do but very few interesting ones.

Bloated compared to the first one. I thought I'd like it more when starting it, but this is definitely a case of the devs providing too much of a good thing. Since the game is bigger some of the levels got a bit frustrating as well (Grunty's Industries please die in a fire).

I liked this game quite a lot, it has everything I felt BK was lacking, a big and interconnected world, atmosphere, dialogue, characters, music, they are all a huge upgrade from what came before.

People complain about the slow pacing and backtracking but in my gameplay I only back-tracked like 3 or 4 times during the whole game, I didn't feel it was much of a problem, the pacing does feel a bit off sometimes but nothing that bad.

Also, Banjo and Kazooie are the main reason I turned into a furry, lmao. I regret nothing

This was much weaker than BK, sinking into over-ambitious worlds and gameplay. The game felt more like work than joy to me.

Plus:
- Story is good
- Soundtrack good again
- typical rare humor
- more bossfights than in BK
- extremely extensive and huge levels but...

Cons:
- Hubworld is even bigger and more confusing than in BK
- Level design not as successful as in BK, too big here, too little memorable and confusing. The 30 cave entrances in Terridaktylusland alone can bementioned here
- Backtracking required far too often
- too many "mini games"
- Swim controls even worse, e.g. Kazooie Torpedo
- Camera often with a strange angle to the ground (apparently this was done back then so that the frame rate on N64 runs a little better...)
- too many skills that quickly become confusing
- Levels are not only too big but also confusing
- many of the Jiggy tasks are stretched across several areas, including backtracking, some are totally complicated and not self-explanatory
- Collecting important items such as eggs is much easier than in BK, also collecting the 100 music notes has almost no value here (20 notes in one...)
- constant change of characters (be it with Mumbo or the enchantment with Humba Wuma) far too inflationary and too often necessary, you have to walk with Mumbo to the Mumbo platform - and back again - and back again with BK...
- Splitting o Banjo/Kazooie ist necessary just too often
- Transformations are overly wacky (e.g. as a washing machine)
- often unsure where/what to do next, much less linear than BK
- Presentation of the countless new skills much less intuitive than in BK (how did that work again?)
- Often disoriented, both in worlds and in Hub
- In many places, the game seems like a creative/crazy riot by the developers
- skillful platforming feels less necessary than in BK, here there is a lot of walking and constant confusing change of controlled characters
- all in all too overambitious and basically even the exact opposite of the masterpiece that BK was

The bear and bird duo control as they did before and even start off with all of their previously learned moves, but the gameplay formula was altered drastically. Banjo-Tooie fixed most of the flaws of the previous title, but not everything was a step in the right direction, or even a step forward.

Note doors and scores are a thing of the past, with the notes only functioning as a means of unlocking more moves. They are now found in clusters, making them much less tedious to collect, but this keeps them from guiding the player through the map. Instead, collecting generally takes a bit of a backseat and exploration is much more of a focus than in Kazooie.

Levels are several times bigger than those of the first game and frequently rely on backtracking both within and between worlds. At the cost of large, sprawling levels is a slower pace of progression and a horrendous slowdown that is present in nearly every moment of the game. Switching characters, transformations, and split ups on top of revisiting previous worlds can make the game tedious with a payoff that often doesn’t feel worth the effort.

As with all the Banjo games, the dialogue is filled with 4th-wall breaks and sarcastic, witty humor that is distinct of 90s Rare. Knowing some of the history of the developer made some of the jokes and references even funnier than I remembered, and it is clear a lot of pride and enjoyment went into making Tooie. Of course, the mention of Banjo-Threeie is hugely disappointing in retrospect.

Speaking from childhood experience, the multiplayer is excellent and offers a lot of different kinds of games to play with friends. Temple Shootout was a multiplayer staple for me.

Positives: Brings some welcome additions to the gameplay mechanics of Banjo-Kazooie (Split-up pads especially), has some stand-out music tracks (Mayahem Temple, Jolly Roger Lagoon), and some genuinely amusing character dialogue.

Negatives: fair amount of backtracking required between levels, repetitive mini-game design (shooting games are especially egregious), puzzle design is hit or miss, bigger levels don't always equal better.

This game was insanity. Was done after the fourth level. The return trips to all the levels were poorly planned IMO, opening a new level only to not be able to complete Jiggie puzzles and obtain items because you need some move from 3 levels in the future. Absolutely ridiculous game. Was painful to finish.

A very ambitious title that falls short occasionally but generally holds up incredibly well, much like its predecessor. However, it's quite different from the original; in Kazooie, you could grab everything in a single world in a single go, worlds were small, and bosses were infrequent. In Tooie, you very frequently have to have moves you learn in later worlds to get everything in a level, worlds are much larger, and every level has a major boss fight. If you dislike backtracking, you're probably not going to enjoy Tooie nearly as much. If you can get past the backtracking issues, however, you're going to find a very strong game with a ton of variation in each world that'll last you quite a long time.

Banjo-Tooie is one of the biggest experiences you can download from Xbox Live Arcade. It's a near-perfect example of platform/adventure gaming and remains fun almost ten years after its initial release. The story and presentation are definitely kid friendly, but there is enough gameplay here to satisfy any age. If you played Banjo-Tooie back in the day it's worth a revisit to remind yourself how good this game was and earn a few achievements. And if you've never played Rare's masterpiece it's high time you found out why it is considered a high point for the genre.
