Well, since these are quite popular now, might as well open a blog-style thing as well! I used to do reviews in Amino Gaming, but I guess I'd rather have a less formal format. So, welcome to Pokepaw's [Rental] Backlog Adventure!!
So, I'm trying to reduce my backlog and try to focus on a couple of games at a time, so I'll be doing this "Rental" challenge, where my backlog is like one of those BlockBuster stores (oops, my age is showing), and each Friday I'll take a bunch of games from it and only play those games during that week. I might fail on keeping to that list from time to time [like playing a bunch of short games in a row, or retiring many games], but hopefully I'll succeed more often than not. So, here's the rules!
- Rent every Friday!
- I can "rent" four games each week. One of them has to be from my Japan collection.
- Once Friday comes around again, I can choose to keep some games for the next week, or swap any for another game in my backlog.
This week's rental games:
1) Amnesia: Memories [JP] - this is a replay, and hopefully I can start properly recognizing some kanji here!
2) GRIS - I'm about half-way done, and so far so good. I want to finish it this week :D
3) Layton's Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaires' Conspiracy - Replay, and I'm really enjoying all the new stuff. The extra puzzles are specially fun!
4) Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch - Got it for Christmas, and I'm gonna start it later today :3

Pretty soon, Everdred's going to need to set aside a whole section of the forums for these, not that I'm complaining.
I've played a bit of Amnesia Memories. I watched the anime which was my first exposure to the series. Visual Novels can be some of the most addictive games for me, but I tend to get bogged down in ones where there are multiple good endings and you can choose your favorite. I need to really put more time into CLANNAD before I start other dating sims. Have fun with best boy Kent.
I love Professor Layton. I played the Azran Legacy about a third of the way through and decided that I needed to save it. It's the last proper Professor Layton game and I didn't want it to end. I just checked and it is shocking to me that I've been holding off on it for 6 years. I still look forward to beating to one day, but I may beat all of the Ace Attorney and the cross over first. I imagine these new Layton games are probably good too, but it will be a long time before I even think about playing them.
Ni No Kuni is really good. It's one of the reasons I got a PS3. Level 5 and Studio Ghibli working together for a game that I liked and understood even while I was mostly avoiding RPGs. I realized when I was watching reviews that I was pretty under-leveled throughout the game. It lead to some long and difficult battles, but I pulled through.

I'm actually surprised this whole Backlog Thread thing is catching on, not that I'm complaining. I guess LetsTalkAboutDune, GamerAim and I really influenced this. Still, I like this rental twist you're doing with this! This sounds interesting and I will definitely be keeping an eye on all these new backlog threads that everyone is doing.

A separate section for all of these is a great idea, especially since I feel that these are either going to start getting buried, or that they are going to bury all the other stuff xD
I also agree with you in that visual novels can be quite addictive. I've been playing them constantly since 2016, and I got a Vita to play Steins;Gate 0, which at the time I think it was a Playstation exclusive, which led me to play all these other games (Code Realize, Collar x Malice and so on). And yes, Kent is best boi... after Ukyo ;3
Respecting Ace Attorney and Layton, you are in for a treat, and I hope you enjoy it!
As for Ni No kuni, I've heard some wonderful things about it for so long, and I'm super happy to finally, FINALLY being able to experience it :D

Well, I've been thinking for a while to do this, but the recent wave of people joining (Oiwa and Sora) just gave me that extra push I needed!
I found the rental thing as a challenge somewhere on the internet a year or two ago and I've wanted to try it ever since, as a way to not spread my attention thin among too many titles. Hopefully this actually works and I follow it! I still need to refine it, like what happens if I only have my Japanese game left and it is Tuesday - tbh I'd probably rent and swap some more stuff - but I'll work on that as things go!

Amnesia Memorriiiiieees~ Who's your fav boy? (I did a similar thing where I played Tokimeki Memorial Girl's Side 1st Love and then found a Japanese copy of the game at a used bookstore in NYC, immediately bought it! Haven't played it yet but I think it's a cool way to learn some Japanese. Especially when youre very familiar with the game.)

Amnesia: Memories is a game I remember very well. The guy I thought I would hate turned out to be best boy (Kent) and the guy I liked turned out to be psycho boyfriend number one (Toma) and Ukyō psycho number two. I just don´t think kidnapping and murder is particular sexy, but maybe I´m just weird.
This game will be forever in my memories for not being as good as Guardians of Rebirth. The otome with the least amount of douchebags.
I have fallen out of love with visual novels lately. But I still have Vampire: The Masquerade - Coteries of New York and Norn9: Var Commons to try out.
Any recommendations on otome where the heroine doesn´t get kidnapped, murdered, abused or treated like a door mat by the men who "love" her?

Well, my fav boy from Amnesia is Ukyo his cute side if you will. His alt personality creeps me out, though Kent is a super close second, like I like one of them more depending on my mood.
As for Otome recommendations, I'd go for some of this list:
- Code: Realize - Guardian of Rebirth
It has a strong story, and Cardia is adorable. She kinda begins like a blank slate, but watching her grow is part of the experience. There's a Yandere character, but I feel it's more developed and has more of a... reason, if you will. Still, I wouldn't date that guy, though he is more bearable than Toma.
- Collar x Malice
Ichika is a rookie police officer and you are solving a case of serial murders. Why? Story reasons, but hey, both the guys and your female friends are cool.
- Hakuoki (Kyoto Winds + Edo Blossoms)
Interesting setting, 12 bachellors and no "true route" like most visual novels.
- Psychedelica of the Ashen Hawk
Jed is one of the bests characters. This one is more story oriented, but it is GREAT. You can enjoy it without having played Black Butterfly, but ypu might miss some references. Still nothing too important though.
There's many, MANY more. Norn9 it's still good, but it can get a bit convoluted at times. You do have three protagonists though, with very distinct personalities - Mikoto is my favorite :3 - and each of them has access to three routes.

Code: Realize - Guardian of Rebirth is probably my favorite and I like all the guys except Saint-Germain. I first thought Arsène Lupin was a bit of a douche, but he redeemed himself in my eyes in Code: Realize − Future Blessings. His story in it was very cute. The only one is sped through for the trophy was Saint-Germains.
My biggest problem with Collar x Malice was that the entire set up made no sense. What government just hands out guns to untrained civilians? It is very easy to get a bad ending in this game. But I liked most of the guys. I just burned out on the game going for the platinum trophy.
I actually played both Psychedelica games. They are beautiful, but also extremely depressing.
I give Norn9 a try when my Switch in´t hogging all my attention and it is time to give the Vita some love again. Underrated system and a crying shame how Sony left it to die.
I´m also keeping an eye out for Boyfriend Dungeon which is a dungeon crawler-dating sim where your weapons transform into guys and it´s so weird that I have to try it. It can´t be worse than Hatoful Boyfriend. That one was garbage.

Oooh I'm keeping an eye on Boyfriend Dungeon as well, I'm is the fence whether to get it or not.
Also, I didn't mention it before, but Steam Prison might be of your liking, and there's this one freebie call Cinderella Phenomenon, which I'm still surprised of it's quality, considering that it's Completely free.
I want to play in my vita so bad, but my Vita 1000 died and the slim one is with a friend, though I'm trying to get it back ASAP.

So last week I finished Gris, and right after that got gifted The Window box, so I'm putting some priority on that game next.

So far from the ones I've played Persona 4 is still my favorite. There's always been some psychology in the Persona games but I just really liked how P4 addressed it. Did you have any thoughts on it so far? I'm looking forward to hearing your review on Layton's Mystery Journey since I've been hearing mixed things about it.

About Persona 4, it is my favorite game from the modern Persona series.
As for Layton, I played this on the 3DS, but there's a lot of new puzzles and extras on the Switch version. Do keep in mind that Katrielle is a Detective, not an archeologist like the professor, and she is a newbie, so in this entire game she's just starting her Detective's Agency, taking on smaller cases, though from what I remember, the final case is bigger than all the other ones.
Katrielle's game is still ok, but it lacks the grander scale of the original games, though that doesn't mean it's a bad game. I'm having a lot of fun with it so far :3

I swapped Persona 4 for Steins;Gate since I'm back home and it will be a couple of weeks until I can play again. Hopefully I don't swap stuff around too often, but at least this time I felt it was needed.

Weekly Update: Only made some progress on Layton's Mystery Journey. Last night I finished the fifth Case. Hopefully this week will be a bit more productive, though I'll be choosing shorter games since I have to finish the last project of the semester.

Once again, I completed a whole bunch of nothing this week! On the brighter side, I made a lot of progress on Layton's Mystery Journey, and finished my uni semester, so I'll be able to play a lot more!

- Steins;Gate: Today I made it to chapter 2! It's been a long time since I played this, and I'm going throught it again with a friend as part of our Steins;Gate marathon :3

I finished Layton's Mystery Journey!
This was quite the charming game, and Katrielle is such a blast to watch! This game benefited a lot from the Switch re-release, since not only it has better resolution than the 3DS version, but it has a wider variety of puzzles!
Also, even if you already finished the main story, there's a new little puzzle to solve everyday, with no added cost. So I can't recommend this enough to all the puzzle lovers out there.
I still think the older 3DS version is worth playing if you have that on your backlog, but if you have the opportunity to play the Switch port, then go for it!
Finally, you don't need to play the prior Layton games to enjoy this, though there's a bunch of easter eggs and a couple of returning characters that will bring a smile to Layton's fans :)

Last week I made a lot of progress in a bunch of games!

I currently have what many consider to be the best party on the game (Yukiko, Yosuke and Kanji), so I'm about to mess it up switching Yukiko for Naoto. Remember, this is the PS2 version, so I don't get extra skills by advancing SL or riding the bike. I'll have to wait for my next visit to my bf's place to keep playing.
3.- Steins;Gate: Only managed to play for a couple of hours (I'm somewhere on chapter 2), since I'm playing it with a friend.
4.- Shin Megami Tensei IV: Right now I'm looking for the Black Samurai.
And of course, I finished Layton's Mytery Journey!
CHANGE IN RULES:
There's a bunch of games that I need to be at someone else's place, or I need a friend to connect to discord and stream to keep playing. So those will be played whenever they can be played, be it once a week or once per month. My "Stream" currently are:

- Kingdom Hearts Final Mix
- Persona 4
Also, I can't change the line-up for the weekly games, unless it is impossible for me to play anything from the rental list or I finished ALL of them.

Yep, I held back this time and only bought one. I recommend you try buying bundles of HO games. There are some that are 4 in 1, 6 in 1, and in my country (Brazil) they are less than 3 dollars.
If you did not play it already, I recommend the Lost Land franchise and the Darkness and Flame (the first one is in sale and the second one you can play the main chapter for free and buy a dlc that unlocks the bonus episode -> more cheap)

I don't know if you know, but Square Enix published an HO game too that has a nice story: Season of Mystery : The Cherry Blossom Murders
If I may, I would like to recomend some free VNs that are really good: Magical Otoge Ciel and Cinderella Phenomenon, both otome game (since your profile picture is Victor). Also, if you did not play already, Rose of Winter is in sale too. It is fun and charming.

About the otome games you recommended, the only one I haven't played is Rose of Wintes, thanks for the shout-out on the sale. I kinda didn't notice it because I've been avoiding my steam wishlist like the flu xD .
