Trying too hard to be like Monkey Island, and it's super annoying the way it handles the end of Monkey Island 2. Go play 'Return to Monkey Island' for a proper followup to the first two games.Updated 1 Month Ago

Gotta love the Monkey Island games. <3:)
+ more Monkey Island shenanigans
+ Elaine being turned into a statue is a good call to adventure
+ decent variety of locations
+ Murray
:(
- LeChuck if I'm being honest
- some of the recurring characters didn't add much to the narrative, felt like they were shoehorned into the game for corporate reasons (Stan, Wally...)
- obtuse inventory object puzzling (but I walkthrough'd so it was ok)
- I don't love the art direction but I can live with it
- not enough interaction with the waifu!!
This game feels like it aims for a younger audience, with the cartoonish art, but at the same time the puzzles are so contrived and often aimed at adults ("hair of the dog that bit ya") so idk what they were going for. Still a fun game and I would replay, but also, I've played more memorable Monkey Island games.

Beautiful animation, music and voice acting, a big portion of humor and also of nonsensical puzzles.Really the only logical puzzle was to assemble a compass for the ferryman.
And also it has one of the shortest endings I've ever seen in an adventure game.
For the fans of the original Monkey Island games it's a must-play, for the others it's just a really hard adventure game that you'll suffer through without a guide.

I'm not sure I can be completely objective about this one. Curse is the first game in the series I ever really dove into (I had the first one on Sega CD as a kid but I didn't understand it then) and it kind of blew my mind as a dumb teenager. I didn't realize games could be so witty and clever while looking like what Dragon's Lair promised and failed to deliver. I remember buying it at Best Buy and when I got home, our phone line wasn't working all weekend, so I was forced to play through the game with no walkthroughs or hints. I did manage to get through it too! I think it's the one and only time I finished an adventure game completely on my own. I don't have the patience these days to brute force my way through the world trying everything on everything and the temptation for walkthroughs are too strong.I do think this game is the best balance for the puzzles in the series though. It doesn't have complete moon logic puzzles that make you think "How could anyone have ever figured this out???" but it does require plenty of out of the box thinking that has its own logic that works. It doesn't require constant backtracking like Monkey Island 2 either, which is a relief. The inventory is large but it doesn't become overwhelming like the previous game either. Combine all of that with the great animation, voice acting, and cast of characters, it's just a wonderful game.
I do have a few minor quibbles with it though. Act V just kinda happens, it doesn't really have any sort of intro to it. I don't really like how Elaine got sidelined either. She had all sorts of agency in the first one and rescued herself but here, she's literally turned into an object. Kinda rubs me the wrong way.

Going through the games, all for the first time, in order. This is easily my favorite so far. If it weren't for the abrupt end sequence / ending, it'd be basically perfect (I understand the behind the scenes of why, but still.)Updated 2.5 Years Ago

This is pure nostalgia for me so the rating feels kind of unfair. A big change up in art style from 1 & 2 in a really cool way and of course the addition of Guybrush Threepwood's dulcet tones. I've always loved the goofiness of these games and the cheesy pseudo-Dad humor scattered throughout. It's a swashbuckling tale of voodoo and ghost/zombie pirates set in the olde Caribbean - what's not to love?Updated 3 Years Ago

Continues the trend of the Monkey Island games where the writing is impeccable and the majority of the puzzle design is clever, but it gives you way too many objectives at once, so that even if you're intellectually capable of solving all the puzzles, you're so mentally exhausted by completing tasks that you end up using hints anyway just to get to something new. Fantastic new art style and voice acting though.Updated 8 Years Ago
