One of the best JRPGs ever created. The use of time travel was great and the story engulfs you from the beginning. They don’t make them like this anymore.

TLDR: what a gem

Pros:
- Everything feels right
- Cast is very interesting
- Looks are timeless
- OST is perfect, what you'd expect from square's golden age
- Battles are not a chore
- Boss battles are tough and you need to think or you'll get KO'd
- It has aged beautifully
- Minigames are still fun
- Decluttered top screen is awesome

Cons:
- You can get lost in space and time. The central npc hinting where to go os very cryptic, he hints once and then you're left to guess.
- Can be a little bit simple/easy... then it has a huge difficulty spike at the end

Several of my friends love JRPG's and they have suggested many of them to them over the years, but I almost always get bored and quit. The one exception to that is Chrono Trigger. I don't know exactly what it is this one, but not only did I finish it, I've played through it probably half a dozen times over the years and it's one of those games I always look forward to coming back to.

I wish I could have played this game without the expectations.

I heard so much about how Chrono Trigger's gameplay is amazing, how revolutionary it was, how great the story is, how it's the best jRPG ever made, and how it's literally perfect.

And don't get me wrong. Chrono Trigger is a great game and was certainly one of the best games ever made at the time of its release...

But it's nowhere near the "everyone must experience this game" status for me.

To start with what I like - the music, combat and pacing were fantastic back in 1995 and are still fantastic today. The graphics and premise of the story have aged, but you can see how great they were at the time.

The only thing that doesn't hold up to the praise is... The story. Don't get me wrong, it's completely fine, maybe even good, but "great"? Nah, chief. Maybe for the standards of 1995 videogames, but not today. The dialogue (at least in the original SNES translation) is pretty bad and often detracts from the gravity of situations happening on the screen, making it really hard to get attached to the characters on the screen.

I also don't get people trying to describe any deeper themes to this story. It's a fun little save the world time travel adventure, but little more than that.

That said... This review sounds pretty negative, as I feel the need to justify only giving this game an 8.5 despite it's legendary status. Don't let that detract you from the fact that I enjoyed my time with Chrono Trigger a hell of a lot. The fast pacing, the different locations and time periods, the combat, the music, all of them made for an adventure that never felt like it's wasting my time. The fact that it didn't "change my life" like people thought it would does not mean I wouldn't play it again. I absolutely would, I had a lot of fun.

I didn't have high expectations and I thought I would have a terrible time as I do with classic RPGs but this is probably one of the best, most fun balanced jrpgs I've ever played with a great soundtrack, amazing graphics and more. I wish I could play it for the first time all over again. I regret waiting 30 years to play this but I am thankful I played after I played chrono cross.

Just like Final Fantasy VI, Chrono Trigger is frequently regarded as one of the greatest JRPGs of all time.
As someone who hasn't played Chrono Trigger before, I was blown away at how this game still holds up to this day.
The story in Chrono Trigger impressed me because even though the premise is simple, the concept is really cool, the goal is clear from the beginning and there are many different ways to approach it, and the pacing is consistent since the game isn't very long nor difficult, so there's no need for grinding at all.
The gameplay impressed me even more; it's not very complex, but it's enjoyable, it looks flashy and it doesn't feel outdated at all; quite the opposite actually.
The characters are charming and engaging enough, not necessarily the best, but good nonetheless.
Also, the visuals and the music are both really great and they hold up incredibly well.
Something I really appreciated in Chrono Trigger personally is the lack of random encounters; it's an awesome quality of life improvement for the genre in my opinion and I wish more older JRPGs did that.
Overall, I got to say, Chrono Trigger is pretty much flawless; I wish the final boss looked more epic... but that's about it. Other than that, I don't have anything negative to say about the game.

Pros:
+ Well-paced and intriguing story
+ Fun combat system
+ Likable characters
+ Very nice visuals and music
+ No random encounters or need for grinding

Cons:
- None

Narrative: 6/10
Gameplay: 8/10
Content: 8/10
Characters: 7/10
Music: 8/10
Graphics/Audio: ?/10

Final Rating: 9/10
- Amazing -
Simply put, Chrono Trigger is... timeless.
Okay, enough with the puns. Chrono Trigger doesn't necessarily excel at anything it does, however, it does almost everything right.

Do I recommend it?:
Chrono Trigger is an easy game to recommend, not only because it's a very good game even to this day, but because it's so accessible, even people who don't enjoy playing RPGs will have fun with this game.

Played on Steam Deck using MelonDS. Great RPG game. Best played on SNES until a better version comes out. Annoying to keep switching screens.

Graphics were obviously amazing with art and character designs by Akira Toriyama. Use of Mode7 and other 3D effects make this game look ahead of it's time - 10/10.

Music is amazing. Tracks fit the theme of the time periods and just an overall fantastic OST. Especially when main theme kicks in when we are about to go kick ass. Only criticism is sometimes music gets a bit repetitive - 9/10.

Battles are fun. Party is very well balanced with very few weak pairings. Difficulty was just right for me. First RPG I've played where the use of items felt mandatory. Status bar during battles kept obscuring things on screen even when switching between top and bottom - 9/10.

Story was great. Amazing use of time travel and every party members story fit into the overall one and I actually cared about the back stories. Feels cohesive and memorable. Too much backtracking and had to use guide at times to help me find out what I need to do next to progress story i.e. who to talk to and in what time period - 8/10

Overall - 9/10 - lives up to the hype. Would definitely play a modern remake of this day one.

I first played Chrono Trigger two years ago when I got back into gaming, and now I have the campfire scene framed on the wall in my kitchen, and own the game on three different consoles. For me it kind of represents getting back into RPGs as an adult and finally having time to pick up where I left off as a kid.

There's nothing I didn't like about this game, and it had everything - anime cut scenes, no random encounters, iconic art direction, best music of all time, good runtime, etc. They thought of everything from a game design perspective and you can tell attention was paid to the details. Is it my favorite game? No, but that's probably because I don't have any nostalgia attached to it. But there's nothing I can find wrong with this game either. It's great.

Did the virtual console version for a reason... actual copy is like $200. Wii VC is exactly the same as the SNES version.

This game was AMAZING, I can see why it has a 91% rating. Just about everything is done well, other than sometimes it's very unclear where you're supposed to go for sidequest and missables, but that's normal for old school RPGs. Double techs were really neat being able to combine moves with different combos for different combinations of characters, lots of magic encouragement which is quite rare for me to see, and most shocking of all there was no random encounters despite how old this game is. Areas were reasonable lengths as well with no forced grinding either. Many of the bosses and enemies were designed great as well. I would highly recommend this to any old school RPG head, shame the physical copies are so expensive though, even the DS version is like $70.

Update: Looking back, this is what I considered to be the best game I played in 2024, so I decide to give it a 100.

I came into Chrono Trigger hearing about how it's one of the greatest games of all time, and I was worried this sentiment came from nostalgia. While I wouldn't put it into my personal top games I've played, I can gladly say I completely understand why it's so beloved and don't think it's carried only by nostalgia.

With it being a game that came out in 1995 I was expecting it to have a simple battle system where you can just mindlessly click attack until you kill enemies. I was pleasantly surprised to find out this was not the case. The fights, in particular the boss fights, felt like they had an incredible level of depth for the time this game released in. It's not just needing to worry about what their physical defense or magic resistance is, some fights with multiple targetable enemies/parts had a specific order you should hit in order to have the best success. There were multiple times I entered a fight and just full sent my team to attack and was immediately wiped due to bosses counter attacking with hard hitting attacks to physical attacks. While I don't think the game was all that difficult, I did appreciate that I had to be somewhat mindful of what I was doing at all times.

I found the story and time travel mechanic to be very interesting as well and was happy with how they made it work. Being able to complete quests by utilizing the ability to travel to other times was really fun. Oh, you need a specific item to progress the story but it doesn't exist in the current time? Just travel to another point in time where that item DOES exist and continuously change how the future plays out. I do wish we could do that bit a little bit more than you able to in the game, but I'm satisfied with what was there.

One small complaint I have for the game is I wasn't a big fan of the Big Bad. The concept of it was a bit meh to me, and in one of the fights with it, It's just a slog of it copying previous boss fights that kept dragging on.

The final note I want to leave off with is how Corridors of Time is one of the greatest video game bops I've ever heard.

Chrono Trigger, the spawn of an all-star collaboration between Squaresoft, Dragon Ball's author Akira Toriyama, and Dragon Quest's creator Yuji Horii, is a densely-packed work that excels in its charming characters, narrative details, and memorable moments that flow like clockwork. The courtroom scene and campfire scene - in particular, can very well rank among the greatest cutscenes of all time. Much of these strengths lie in its time travel feature (quoting A Link to the Past) and its influence over side quests, loot, and multiple different endings (not just 2 or 3) with a notable attention to detail. Adding to that recipe are unique, clever arrangements and implementations of battle encounters, dungeon variety, puzzles, etc. All expertly crafted and strikingly polished, with a stellar soundtrack. The combat is nowhere near as strong, but it does employ a unique, top-down on-map battle perspective, mostly centered around AOE and team compositions on top of its ATB system. Simple, with enough intriguing mechanics to experiment with, but the game's surrounding factors often leave combat in the background, which limits much of its potential.

That weakness - however, may ultimately be a consequence of its greater aspects. By reducing the focus on combat, Square set yet another benchmark to the JRPG canon for later generations. The story-focused format refined by the likes of Dragon Quest V, Phantasy Star IV, and Final Fantasy VI has finally reached formal perfection.

Chrono Trigger does pretty much everything well.

The story is grandiose without being incoherent, yet accessible without being overly simple. It's a fun time traveling epic with the highest stakes imaginable. The climax of the story blew my mind! The game lets you do a lot, but where it excels the most is in the sidequests. Chrono Trigger lets you do good deeds and see the fruits of your labor centuries later. The characters are also well-designed; Frog and Magus stand out to me the most, but the whole cast is well rounded.

Gameplay-wise, Chrono Trigger is an RPG that makes use of the ATB system with a twist- the battles take place on the same field you explore! The enemies move around and positioning becomes important for some attacks. The magic system isn't very complex, but I think it serves the game well. Some enemies resist magic and some characters have limited access to magic, so it's not overwhelmingly powerful- in fact, it's quite well balanced with physical attacks. Random battles are also not really present- it's more that there are some unavoidable and surprising battles, but most battles can be triggered or avoided deliberately. The ATB system really shines here too- your actions and inactions can really change the momentum in a battle.

Lastly, the game is a work of art. The graphics, even on a Super Nintendo, are gorgeous. Everything from character portraits to environment backgrounds stand out, making it one of the most visually appealing games out there. It's amazing to look at. And if that wasn't enough, the soundtrack is also spectacular. I've had numerous tracks stuck in my head since I started playing.

If you found yourself with a SNES and could only choose one game to play for the rest of your life, I'd recommend this one.

There comes a time in every fledgling video game enthusiast's life where they cast their eyes towards the past. It stands to reason that if you like video games, you'll want to play the best. And regardless of what you search or who you ask, a common response will begin to emerge: Chrono Trigger. Developed by a group of designers so prestigious they were referred to by Square as a "Dream Team," Chrono Trigger has been dominating top 10 lists and best-of charts ever since its SNES release. It's consistently referred to by many as the greatest game of all time. Playing it is considered almost a rite of passage into the 16-bit era. And yet, whenever a game is this celebrated, this universally praised, it's only natural to have some apprehension. After all, these best-of lists can turn into a sort of self-perpetuating cycle where everyone knows the game is supposed to be good but might only be ranking it highly due to its prestige. It's important, then, to experience these games yourself, to find what has held up and what hasn't, and—in Chrono Trigger's case—to discover a true masterwork of RPG design.

By 1995, Square had practically mastered their Active Time Battle mode with Final Fantasy, and yet Chrono Trigger's combat system is still incredibly unique; each battle has predetermined layouts where your character positions matter, and timing is everything. Each character pairing also has specific tech moves that combine their turns into one powerful move, and it's fantastic to consider how each new tech affects what your party is capable of and how you tackle further challenges down the road. Each battle forces you to think on your feet and ensures you're rarely doing the same thing twice, so adaptability is paramount. And while that sounds complicated, one of CT's most impressive features is its accessibility; it's a deceptively simple title that makes for an incredible introduction to the RPG genre. Your team always seems to be at the right level; endgame weapons and techs are unlocked through normal play instead of tedious grinding, and the battle speed can be adjusted for those who prefer slower-paced combat.

In truth, the only negative in Chrono Trigger's design is that its combat tools are a little too generous, and as a result, there are some dungeons where combat can get a little redundant. But the reason this is even noticeable is because CT's pacing is, for the vast majority of the game, immaculate. This is a game famous for its multiple endings, optional side quests, and hidden details, and a full 100% playthrough, even if it's your first time, will clock in around the 20-hour mark. Even for RPGs in 1995, that was pretty brisk; now? Chrono Trigger represents tremendous value for time. No plot point feels tacked on—immensely impressive for a game about time travel—and every part of the game is the good part.

Chrono Trigger is, at its core, a game about confrontation of one's past, challenging one's own fate, and making improvements for the future. The party's quest is to defeat Lavos and stop the end of the world, sure, but the party's journey is one of self-reflection and atonement. As such, Chrono Trigger is intent on making sure you know your actions matter, and it does this early on with a trial scene that is equal parts surprising and brilliant. The way CT teaches you things without explicitly saying them is tremendous, and from then on, you're trained to always consider how you can change the future—and the past—for the better. It's incredibly satisfying to see even the smallest action pay off and subconsciously pushes you to explore the world more, searching throughout time for an ailment to every malady.

Each character (except perhaps Ayla) has their own journey of flaws and redemption as well, and they are full of poignant or epic moments all while offering something unique. Frog's tale of revenge turned to acceptance is epic and inspiring, while Lucca & Robo's is a poignant story about what it means to be human. Each character is given their moment to shine, and the fact that a game about time travelers fighting a mysterious force that threatens to destroy the world can balance these more grounded aspects so well without feeling bloated, and can fit it all into 20 hours without feeling rushed, is a tremendously impressive achievement.

As cliché as it is to say, Chrono Trigger truly is a timeless game. Its incredible pixel work and soundtrack ensure that it will never age poorly. Its wealth of genre-defining ideas—the ability to fight the final boss at any time, the multiple endings, the worlds in different times—ensure that it will forever be an inspiration for classics already made and classics yet to come. And its gameplay and themes ensure that when players discover it in the future, they won't be disappointed. And while Chrono Trigger's word-of-mouth reputation will ensure it is always relevant, its everlasting design will ensure it is always brilliant—then, now, and forever.

I started playing this game recently just because it's only availalbe for SNES so no modern ports available. Mobile version was not very comfortable so I emulated it on Switch.

The sountrack made it's impression the moment I stepped in the fair and they just keep coming.
I don't play lots of JRPG/RPG so the battling mechanic was a bit weird at first since little to no tutorial is present in the game and there was some confusion regarding enemies that kept attacking during my turn when I had picked the WAIT mode, but now it's more manageable as I got used to it and it's not that bad.

Still regarding the combat system, it's probably the first time that I see something like this which is nice for a change.

The game feels balanced overall, you have a character that can heal and you get plenty of potions in chests as you explore. Though one lame thing about exploring is monsters that keep spawning after you defeat them.

Fully healing the team is not as much of a luxury as I thought at the beginning, as it costs only 10 to rest at the inns and you get more than that just by defeating 1 monster.

I called the first plot twist before the in-game characters did. It was made quite apparent after the gossip guy kept telling me the same thing exactly where I met the person.

Also for the 80 sliver points game, you don't have to walk to complete it (hold B).

The classic that many people say is Square's best and a timeless must-play, I didn't find it that good back when I first played it on the NDS. I remember getting stuck all the time and never knowing where to go, finding the combat system dull and slow, and just generally taking ages to finally beat the game. Well, after replaying it on Steam (avoid that version at all costs, btw, it's horrible), I find myself wondering what the hell was wrong with younger me

The game is actually really short and linear (although the NDS/Steam-exclusive bonus content really fluffs up the playtime with terribly dull but rewarding sidequests) and the combat system, while far from my favorite, is at the very least pretty harmless

Overall I'd say it certainly deserves the "classic" title, but it's not quite a timeless masterpiece; the much praised story is actually quite poorly written and full of time-related inconsistencies, which goes to show that even the poster child of time travel games can't do time travel right but eh, it's still a fun game to play

What could possibly result from the assembling of a Dream Team from Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Seiken Densetsu and a bunch of other monster sagas that all were reaching a peak at the time? Nowadays, it would be a gigantic, beautiful but probably a little boring AAA. Back then, it was a very deep and surprisingly humble game, telling a deep and surprisingly simple time-travel story with powerful mechanics and crazy loveable characters. Times changed, I guess...

I can see why this game is heralded as one of the greatest RPGs of all time. The combat is fluid and requires actual strategy, but never gets frustratingly difficult. The story is captivating with a couple unexpected twists, and allows for many side stories that I actually felt compelled to pursue. The characters are charming, and I felt myself trying to switch out my party often to use all of them.

Apenas jogue.

This game's way ahead of its time.

Good
- interesting to hear monsters talking. Their dialogue is pretty amusing.
- being able to replace party members at any time is very convenient. Party members that are on the sidelines also scale in level, which is good because when you want to switch them in they won't be super underleveled.
- there's not too many buffs and debuffs which I personally like. It has the basic ones, which makes the game not too shallow and not too deep. Games like FF have so many buffs and debuffs, sometimes I lose track of them and it just get a little confusing.
- the battle animations are phenomenal for its time
- it's nice that they wrote dialog for each character so the cutscenes will still fuel organic no matter who you have in the party.
- I like the fact that KO'd teammates have 1 HP after battle. This way I don't have to waste a revive on them
- debuffs don't stick after battle. Don't have go into menu just to heal after. Saves time.
- really interesting enemies. Like snakes that absorb each other.
- before pokemon did the trainer line of sight battles, Chrono trigger did it. Those eye balls in the time egg chapter, you have to wait til they close their eyes if you want to avoid them. The rats in proto dome in lab 32, you have to dodge rats to not get stuff stolen from u.
- moving around during text box is great. Allows freedom to check out the area or leave without having to mash to the end.
- the menuing is very very fluent and informative, without being over complicated.
- button remap is really nice. Allows full customization.
- music is awesome
- Chrono trigger was way ahead of its time. With the battle system, with the menu layout, with wild encounters, with interesting environments interactions, and enemy types. And even story structure, the whole time travel aspect actually worked out pretty well, with surprises like magus being that kid from zeal, and being able to resurrect Chrono, and all those other characters that's came to the future whom you meet later on in the past. for a piece of media, not even just a video game, this was very innovative.
- different dialogue lines depending on who's with the party during cutscene
- seeing the game over scene after losing to lavos invokes a certain feeling.

Bad
- it's difficult to see the difference between second floor and first floor. As well as corridors that are behind walls. I know the SNES is quite primitive, but I still feel they could have done a better job. Maybe they could have added better Shadow sprites.
- I wish Chrono had dialogue. Mute protagonists can work but I don't think they did it well here. The other characters have plenty of dialogue, but they don't really interact with Chrono directly. When they refer to Chrono they say it in the way as if he isn't there. So most of the interactions in the cut scenes of the party makes it seem like Chrono is like a ghost. Which in turn makes me feel like a ghost. Mute protagonist is supposed to make you feel like you are in their shoes, and I am in the shoes of an empty husk. Link is an example of a mute protagonist done well. Other characters refer to him directly, and he does have to do nuisances like facial expressions, physical reactions.
- I felt they could have used maybe just a set of different variation of the reaction sprites. There's literally only one suprise sprite. Sometimes the char seem like they are overreacting cause the sprite is so dramatic.
- I couldn't go back to kingdom of zeal to get black rock, meaning eternal darkness tech was lost to me forever. I hate not being to back track to important things. I can understand an aesthetic item being missable, but not an item that allows me to learn one of the strongest spells in the game. Missed forever. After zeal fell, the Blackstone should still be attainable either somewhere else, or logically, I should be able to travel back in time, back before zeal fell, to attain black rock.

Chrono Trigger is a really good game. For the time of its release it must have been one of the greatest games ever. It’s still an excellent game in the year 2018.

Chrono Trigger still stays fresh after almost 30 years since the release. It has kind of unique flavor of time-travel done well, fantasy setting, great pseudo-turn based with ATB system, innovative system of dual and triple attacks depending on who do you have in a party. That all blends exceptionally well with one of the best soundtracks in the video games history from Mitsuda and Uematsu. Playing the game and traveling through different eras, the player has the feeling that the things we did in the past really matter in the future. Even after the 3 decades, the game feels like it could be released now and still be very good. The DS version unclutters a screen and makes it look even better. The situation that we have a Chrono Cross port on Nintendo Switch, and not Chrono Trigger is criminal.

A good game with an amazing story/music/etc totally worth playing but with some clunky aspects that are bothersome sometimes, like bosses with too much health, that just keep me doing the same combo over and over again until i kill them.

I can't believe I waited so long to play this game. Everything is fantastic. Writing, sound design, visuals and gameplay were all on point. I loved all the characters and each of them were well fleshed out. Getting all the ultimate weapons was fun and it added a lot of context to each individuals story.

Battle mechanics are cutting edge for the time. Being able to combine attacks with 2 to 3 party members really brought everything together.

This game is a solid 10 and I get why it is such a loved and well revered game.

This is probably the best jrpg of all time, its simple yet perfectly paced and doesnt bloat you with grind, the story was unique for the time its designed around time mechanic and has the one of the best soundtracks in any game, i dont enjoy the repetitive random respawning combat encounters but other than that its about as good as a jrpg gets
