The first ever Zelda game to feature the titular princess as its playable character teeters on brilliance. But when you fall back on swords and arrows to get through boss fights, you realize that perhaps the "echo" system needed a little bit more time in the oven.Updated 4 Days Ago

I'm befuddled that so many other reviews fail to mention that this game is not good. There are so many damn echo summons in this game and yet the echo system feels so unpolished. You're rarely tested creatively to combine echoes to solve puzzles. Too many echoes are simply "something that attacks" which makes them redundant. Most echoes should never be used. The UI for scrolling through them one-at-a-time is excruciating and I can't believe it made it through playtesting.
It's mind numbingly easy for most gamers. Nearly all fights consist of pressing Y to summon a creature then walking around waiting until it defeats the enemy. Zelda as protagonist is an exciting proposition, yet she never speaks and you learn nothing new about her. The mystique of Zelda no longer feels like mystique, as she's kind of a bore. The other characters talk way too much yet have nothing to say.
The game looks good (although the style was photocopied from previous Zeldas) and controls smoothly. Rich sounding score that's mostly adaptations of old themes. It's a bright colorful kids game... but considering this a mainline Zelda game makes my eyelid twitch.

I am very happy that I did not banish the newest Zelda title to my backlog for long. Echoes of Wisdom is a full-fledged 2D Zelda experience with traditional dungeons, creative design elements, and a well-paced world to explore. I was initially afraid that the Echoes system would make the game feel like Tears of the Kingdom-lite. Instead, it makes every inch of the world rewarding to explore as you constantly discover and add new Echoes to your repertoire. Yes, certain echoes will get a massive amount of use and some are next to useless, but the sheer variety gives the player a level of freedom to puzzle-solving that settles into a happy medium between the modern Switch-era 3D Zeldas and the restrictive "one solution" design of the older games. Bosses are also just creative enough to stay engaging and don't rely on one specific gimmick to defeat them. While the game's frame rate might bother some, I found the experience to be consistent enough for a late-era switch game. It never hindered the gameplay for me. The only other bothersome aspect is the menuing to access the eventual 100+ echoes in your arsenal. There are a number of categories you can organize them by, but Nintendo really should have given us a customizable tab for our favorites. "Most used" was a good idea, but without letting me customize the order they are in on the tab, you haven't really solved the issue.
Personally, I recommend that all gamers interested in The Legend of Zelda series and gameplay play this game. The different systems might seem intimidating at first, but the onboarding is well-paced and the gameplay is engaging throughout. The swordfighter form, while limited to a rechargeable bar, satisfies the urge to hit things with a sword when needed and the fact that this form can be upgraded helps give Zelda another aspect of progression beyond just finding new echoes. Lastly, while the story won't win any awards, a more traditional Zelda story that draws on and adds to the lore was really refreshing to me as a longtime fan who found Tears of the Kingdom to be a letdown narratively. Simply put, this is a must play entry in the series.

I was really surprised by this game. I bought up from a whim, after hearing good things about it online, and decided to give it a try. I have played previous Legend of Zelda titles, and although this isn't as grand as BOTW, it was such a fun take on the franchise. In this game you played as Zelda, who has the ability to spawn 'echoes'. These are objects or creatures in the world that Zelda can use to go through puzzles and obstacles. The game looked beautiful on the switch. My favourite section was the Jabul Waters, as the water looked so pretty, and it was fun seeing the two different Zora tribes, but all them were equally great. The game had many different dungeons to explore (roughly 7 I think in total?) and it never felt stale.
The game introduced new echoes and concepts that Zelda could use. I found most of them to be quite simple, but some were a bit head scratching at certain points. I wished they were a bit more memorable, as I didn't have a particular favourite (but maybe that's because they were all equally good).
The only complaint I have was with the menu system. I heard about this online, and I brushed over it, but while playing the game i'm not sure what the developers were thinking. All of the echoes are bunched into a side scrolling tab, and it can be a hassle going through each one to find a particular thing.
I felt like the game should have had two seperate echo slots, one for platforms and another for monsters. Or they should have implemented a 'favourites' tab, where you can pick the ones you use the most. I know they do have this techinically, but you can't assign them yourself.
Another little thing, is that the game's framerate can drop at certain times. I was quite surprised when starting, and going into the Hyrule Town and seeing framerates drop. It wasn't a dealbreaker, but it was noticeable.
Overall the game was super fun. I never got bored of the game, and the mechanics were very interesting and creative.

First off, fantastic that you actually play as Zelda! I really like the idea of being able to find creative solutions by summoning various items and monsters. However after a certain point, I found that I kept using the same few things. Build a stack of beds to get up that cliff, summon a flying tile to cross that gulf, call a level 3 Darknut to clean house. Also it would have been really cool to have a new game plus where you play as Link.Updated 3 Weeks Ago

8.1 Stars. The concept behind this game is great. First game where you actually play as Zelda and they totally rethought how the gameplay works through her. Trying to make a 2D version of Breath of the Wild. I appreciate the creativity and ideas to chnage how Zelda plays versus a traditional game where you play as Link. The echo mechanic was fun but definately got a little frustrating at times. Just like Tears of the Kingdom, the menus were terrible and the biggest issue with creating echoes. It was fun to find new echoes and expiriment, but eventually you just used one in every battle. The length of this game felt great. It was a big map but never felt empty or like there was any padding. The story was engaging, and the side content was fun. The graphics still are not my favorite but they bothered me less than they did in the Link's Awakening remake. I really liked the deku and Conde pieces in particular. Overall great 2D Zelda game that will be fun to replay!Updated 3.5 Weeks Ago

Echoes of Wisdom is a fresh and creative take on 2D Zelda. The new echo and bind abilities allow for a ton of experimentation! I found the world to be incredibly vibrant and charming. The level design was also fantastic, especially the void levels! It’s too bad that the game doesn’t run at consistent 60 fps. Nothing blew me away, but my adventure was a consistently fun! 8.8/10

This was a frozen pizza for me. Good enough and hits the spot but isn't that special. Nothing really wrong about this game it is a Zelda game and I would say that it is better than Links Awakening but it is not even close to any of the main lines ones. It is complete enough in my eyes to not really call it a spin off. The graphics are really good the clay chibi style works well and you can see how they translated it from links awakening to make this. The world, story, characters, gameplay, level design, and puzzles are are good not great. The performance chugs a bit but was not as bad as I had heard. I think the game has good bones but struggles. The UI is bad, you are needing to echo swap constantly the sorting system is not good. There are so many echoes that are basically clone or ones serves no function or are better than others. That bog down the one line menu which was limited enough. I would often look for a certain echo and scroll right by it. It slowed me down and constantly was a hassle. I got used to it and once you got things on the most recent tab and kept using them it was serviceable.
The game walks this line between 2D and 3D but often struggles to work super well in the 3D space it was far to common to misplace echoes or fall off a edge which felt like a lot of the time was less my fault and more the perspective playing tricks on you. The combat was also very strange, letting you be Link for limited times really diminishes the use for echoes from a combat perspective. I think the fighting with echoes is a good concept but when you realize how bad the AI for most of them are you change your mind. It often times feels like this game of rock paper scissors that the echoes play that often waste your time. I tried it for awhile but the most I played the easier it was to just spawn something big as a distraction and use the Link power to kill them. You could just offset the energy requirements with potions.
There are good things I think the last battle was pretty sick although it felt weird to just lose your link powers right at the end especially when you get to the point where you are stating to rely on them regularly. It felt good to solve the puzzle using the echoes was fun, most were pretty straight forward there were very few spots that really had me stuck. There were a few that were so OP IMO that they over shadow all the rest (cloud, water block, beds, & darknut) just to name a few. It was worth it to play but will not go down as one of the greats for me. Feels serviceable but in the end will probably be forgettable.

- Better in concept than in practice. It's a cool idea to have a 'druid / necromancer' style approach to combat. But, then most fights devolve into summoning and resummoning with little control over the action. I found myself bored by many of the boss and combat encounters as a result.- The platforming side was more compelling and there are a bunch of ways to use the echoes that allow you to be creative. It has a kind of zany feel like a handheld version of TOTK's ethos.
- The preambles to each dungeon in the first half are too long. The second half of the game was better, but I found the first half dragged and felt it was artificially extended.
- Good exploration-feel in several parts of the map. The game ends up feeling a lot bigger than it looks at first. The snow area especially.
Overall: Solid entry, I like the gimmick. Feels like they could have taken one or two more revs on the gameplay / combat and it could have been a 9/10.

Zelda finally gets the spotlight as the main character of her own titular game series! The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom is styled after the old top-down Zelda games, sharing the colorful chibi art style of The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening remake. Link is captured this time, leaving Zelda to mend the rifts spreading across Hyrule with the help of a a little creature called Tri. Zelda's main gimmick is creating physical echoes of objects to solve puzzles, and echoes of monsters to fight for her. The amount of objects you can summon increase as you progress. You can go into Swordfighter form to resume Link's control scheme for a short time, if you want to gank enemies without relying on the at times slow monster AI. While the total control scheme can be convoluted at times, having free reign for puzzle solving is shockingly intuitive. It does eventually run into the Scribblenauts problem where, when you have so many options, you end up only using a few in the end. You'll likely be stacking Minecraft blocks of water to get anywhere as I did too lol. Dungeons were fun and satisfying. The minor character arcs of each main quest were rather cute.
My main gripe is the UI. Every single echo in the game, all 127 of them, must be selected through one single shared row to scroll through. You cannot set favorites, or remove echoes you will never use (unique puzzle assets never needed again). It isn't even separated by objects vs monsters. If you sort by anything but Recently Used, you'll be scrolling constantly for literally anything. No idea how this wasn't a major consideration in design. Half your moveset is removed for the final boss, making me wonder why I even bothered upgrading Swordfighter form to be able to use it longer, be it upgrading the gauge or going out of my way with dojo challenge accessories. Automatons were pointless. It felt like there was a lot of empty space.

A cute puzzle adventure game and a welcome break from the classic action adventure games that the Zelda franchise is known for.Great map, heavily inspired by its predecessors Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom.
Insane exploration from very early on - your imagination is the limit!
A fun smoothie minigame where you combine 2 ingredients to make a variety of flavours, with dud smoothies for a few unsavoury combos.
Rupees are mostly acquired through treasure chests in this game, almost certainly as a response to the developers' intent to have Zelda be a combat averse protagonist.
My most used echoes include: beds and trampolines for movement; and darknuts, ignizols and pots for combat.
Players who criticize the small number of highly efficient echoes fail to appreciate 2 aspects at a minimum:
1. Traditionally, Zelda bosses and puzzles have required a single "key item" from the dungeon in which they are acquired in order to solve. From this standpoint, there is only 1 way to solve these conundrums.
2. Lots of popular puzzles, particularly the Layton series, have either only 1 solution, or "infinite" solutions but only 1 being the "best" solution, usually identified by using the fewest number of moves.
The fact that there exists a small subset of "most useful echoes" is simply the natural inclination for humans to optimize ad infinitum.
A fantastic introductory game for young female gamers in particular, who are traditionally not as interested in physical combat, as noted by the popularity of social games such as The Sims and Animal Crossing amongst the female demographic.
The success and popularity of this title opens up the possibility for future flagship titles to include Zelda as a playable progatonist, both as a alternative to Link as well as a duo with Link.

I'm happy with this approach to a Zelda game. I was hoping if they ever made one, that it would be based in her using magic instead of just making her female Link. The echoes make this a puzzle game with many tools to solve every problem. It gives it a Scribblenauts feel. It keeps making me feel clever with the ideas I come up with to traverse the environments and fight enemies because of the large amount of options. My solution feels like my own instead of the one solution to the problem. My go-to echoes for different situations kept changing over time as I earned more keeping the game from getting stale. Adding this new toolset to an old-school Zelda world made me feel like I was breaking the rules. I used echoes to climb on top of trees and other environmental barriers I used to have to walk around or turn back from in old games like I was using a speed-run hack. The presentation creates a Zelda game at it's most cartoon-ish. It's bright and colorful with cute little character models animated in more expressive detail than the old games could. This is all accompanied with charming, funny writing you would expect of a Nintendo game.Updated 1 Month Ago

I have a lot of mixed feelings about this game, but ultimately I came away disappointed with the experience. The music and visual design of the game was fantastic and easily the best part. Hearing pieces of BOTW/TOTK in here made it feel a bit like a spin-off. That comes with a few problems as well. One of the worst parts of TOTK is the menu design, continuing a problem that should’ve been ironed out from BOTW. With all the echoes in this game, the menus became frustrating to use, particularly during combat. Spending this much time going through a side scrolling menu in a game to find the one piece of information you need is not something I was expecting or wanting to see 3 Zelda games in a row.
I haven’t played Link’s Awakening remake yet, but the gameplay of link mode makes me want to even more! I thoroughly enjoyed the actual world and the designs of “some” of the dungeons, but this mode kept reminding me of how much better the gameplay was as Link compared to Zelda. The developers asked a good question by thinking of what the first game to play as Princess Zelda would feel like. The problem is that the answer they came up with often felt tedious and uninteresting. The targeting system for 3D spaces wasn’t very well done, and the air combat was simply obnoxious in every single instance. I’m not sure what solution I would offer to these problems due to the fact that I didn’t enjoy the core gameplay loop. I’m sure there will be another game in this series of Zelda games (especially with the brief flash of the wand at the end hinting that there is a potential future for the series. , but I don’t think I would consider buying it.
Final note is that the actual performance of the game is abysmal and unacceptable from a $60 release. I had heard that Link’s Awakening had similar issues, but I was not expecting the frame rate to lurch between 30 and 60 so frequently. Whatever the cause, this is immersion breaking and increases the difficulty of any combat situation.
As someone who preordered this game and was hyped to play on day one, it was a major letdown. Going forward, I will be more skeptical of these types of releases.

While in concept, this is a great game taking the freedom and creativity from Breath of the Wild/Tears of the Kingdom and bringing it to the 2D Zelda format, it really didn't click with me no matter how much I tried. The story is pretty straight forward but the artstlye is a more polished version of hte Link's Awakening remake which looks even better now and the different areas of the map look incredible with lots to explore and teases for future rewards once you find the right echo. This makes running around the map a joy and encourages you to explore more so you have a full arsenal of echoes to conquer any challenge.
Unfortunately a lot of the echoes fill the same purpose and you end up using the same 5-6 to complete most challenges. This does allow players to use their preferred methods to solve puzzles and it is a testement to the game's design that most puzzles can be solved using obviously unintended ways while still being fun and giving that satisfaction for still solving them. Similarly, enemies and bosses can mostly be taken on with whatever echo you prefer with some excpetions requiring a specific element or other variable. This eventually ended with me finding no challenge as after the first half of the game and not much exploration I had some very powerful echoes that could get me through nearly every puzzle or fight. I admit this is a me thing though as I could have chosen to use other echoes at any point.
Overall, this is a very well made and fun game and a solid title in the Zelda franchise but one I most likely won't be returning to

Echoes of Wisdom is probably the funnest 7/10 i’ve played in a long time. It does so much wrong but is still held back in many noticeable ways that I can rate it any higher. The story is super interesting with awesome lore thats better than most recent Zelda games in my opinion and I recommend almost for this alone. The game is just straight-up fun with it’s unique puzzle design and ways to tackle them. Unfortunately it continuously reminds you that playing as Link in combat is 100% better and shows little faith in itself by immediately recommending a feature where you can basically play as Link with swordfighter mode. The game would honestly feel better without this as you wouldn’t constantly be reminded of this. The other con is many puzzles can be beaten using only a couple of the echoes, but the game does do a good job at showing you why you would use this echo in many of the overworld and dungeon puzzles.
Nonetheless EOW is an easy recommendation but all-in-all i’d rather play a brand new top down Zelda as Link, but i’m still happy this exists.

I initially wondered why the style and look of Zelda: Link's Awakening was so drastically updated in its remake. Now, it's clear to me that the remake wasn't just about aesthetics—it served as a foundation for developing assets and maps that could be repurposed in future games. This is particularly evident in Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, the latest addition to the franchise. However, the developers didn't stop at reusing assets or creating another 2D Zelda title. They pushed the boundaries of gameplay mechanics, delivering something fresh and innovative. The new "echo system" is a standout example. This clever mechanic lets you summon objects and monsters, adding layers of creativity and expression to the gameplay, while offering puzzles with multiple solutions. The ability to tether yourself to an enemy or echo allows for dynamic combat interactions, making you feel more engaged and in control of each fight.
The game’s charm is also worth praising. From the character models to the environments, everything exudes personality. The horses, the intricate dresses, and the detailed houses—all of it showcases the best of 2D Zelda's artistic style. The cast of characters, along with the original Japanese voice actors, infuses the world with a strong sense of identity, making the world feel vibrant and alive.
Criticisms are minimal, though there is one aspect that stands out. The UI is similar to TOTK, where you find yourself cluttered with items and echoes that you don't regularly want to use, there is no favorite menu and even though you can bring up a big menu with all your echoes it does stop the action right on it's tracks. Additionally unlike most Nintendo games, Echoes of Wisdom can be difficult to fully complete, as it lacks clear guidance when it comes to finding the final pieces of heart or echoes. This absence of direction is unfortunate, especially since Nintendo is usually excellent at making their games accessible and rewarding to explore.
Overall, Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom is a brilliant reinvention of what we expect from the series. It skillfully merges the best elements of 2D and 3D Zelda games, showing the synergy of both styles on a single platform. The development team has exceeded expectations, delivering an experience that feels fresh yet familiar.
One lingering question, though, is about the game's pricing. Given the difference in content and playtime between 2D and 3D Zelda titles, is it fair for Echoes of Wisdom to be priced the same as larger 3D installments? While this isn’t something I can definitively answer, it's worth considering, especially since past games on consoles like the Nintendo 64 and Game Boy/GBA had different price points.

Echoes of Wisdom in concept is a game that is unlike all other previous Zelda games. You get to play as Zelda and the main catch is you summon echoes of objects you discover that can be used to solve puzzles. Additionally, you can’t engage in combat yourself, with the exception of a limited time transformation, so most combat is done through summoning echoes of enemies you have defeated. The idea makes you think that there will be this massive sandbox of options on how to solve puzzles but the game acts in the same way as a regular Zelda game. Each dungeon has an echo you obtain in the dungeon that is used to solve most of the puzzles in said dungeon. There are other non-specific puzzles to beat that usually involve either crossing a large gap or getting to a higher level which are all solved with the same couple of objects, beds, waterblocks, crates. You have this massive menu of echoes to summon and most of them are never used. The blame comes mostly from combat creature summons which are all mostly just filler with only maybe 10 summons ever used for combat. The combat isn’t very fun because it is just summoning and running away until your familiar dies then summon it again. The dungeons were actually pretty fun as they are similar to classic 2D Zelda dungeon designs albeit quite a bit easier. Some bosses had some interesting mechanics as well and weren’t always just 100% shoot guy in big eye even though there are some of those.
The game is decently fun but I found myself getting bored halfway through the game. I did end up beating it out of obligation to the franchise but only about 5-6 hours I was really engaged in the game. The game becomes too samey in puzzles and solutions that it gets boring.

Fun, chill and solid experience. They did a very good job of incorporating into 2D Zelda new mechanics from BOWT and TOTK.Updated 2 Months Ago

Cute coziness is how I would describe this latest Zelda instalment. What I liked:
* The artstyle is similar to the remake of Link's Awakening and I love that
* It's a very easy game. The way you can copy elements from the world makes for interesting gameplay.
* The different parts of the world are all unique. The characters you find there are fun to interact with.
* The loop of clearing rifts and saving a region is fun.
* I like that Zelda is the hero, but I also like that Link features in it (in a way)
* The music and sound effects are cozy.
What I didn't like:
* After a while I found my favourite echoes and I stuck to those making it a bit less interesting
* It's a tiny bit long for what it is. After a while I didn't really want to complete all side quests and rifts.
* Scrolling through echoes is tedious. Luckily you can sort in different ways to shortcut what you're looking for.
I hope Nintendo decides to make more little games like this. More Zelda is never a bad thing.

Love the creative, freeform mechanics. Good dungeons, avoids most of the stiffness of the typical Zelda structure. Like pretty much all modern Zeldas, it talks too much.Updated 2 Months Ago

Echoes of Wisdom is a really special game. Grezzo did a fantastic job translating some of the creativity and open puzzle solving of BotW and TotK into a 2D Zelda. Finding new echoes and coming up with unique solutions is always extremely exciting even if it was occasionally frustrating. The story is interesting and there's some great characters that you get to meet along the way. The music is also very strong and there are several memorable tracks that really stood out and made the experience even better. It was really refreshing summoning echoes to fight for you and determining just the right time to use your meter to transform into Link to really lay on the damage.
This was my first Zelda game that wasn't in the BotW style, and I am definitely a fan. I will be going back and checking out more games in the series, and hopefully I will enjoy them at least as much as this one.

A great game, though the summons sometimes wouldn't attack and you'd be sitting there waiting for the battle to finsih itself. The summon selection was also cumbersome, which probably prevented me from trying too many to keep my favorites at the top. I enjoyed the open world-ish experience that clearly took hints from the Breath / Tears games.Updated 2 Months Ago

A very creative, alternatively-styled Zelda game that incorporates the best from the more-recent 2D-to-3D Zelda remakes with the construction aspects of Breath of the Wild / Tears of the Kingdom. A few hiccups & semi-annoying elements from a control/puzzle/story perspective, but—overall—yet another interesting, solid Zelda experience.Updated 2 Months Ago

graphics: 4/5nintendo tends to stick with graphics that age well. since it's the same/similar models used in the remaster for links awakening it looks pretty good.
sound: 4/5
the new music for the overworld and dungeons were very good. they stuck with my long after i played the game. most of the monsters were silent as were most of the people in the game so it was sound effects and overworld music.
story: 4/5
it was nice to let zelda have the center stage for once. the story was very original and it was nice to not fight ganon in one form or another. there were lots of side activities to keep you busy but you didn't really care to much about the characters. they were filler.
gameplay: 3/5
zelda started with basic sword gameplay and only evolved once breath of the wild/tears of the kingdom came along. instead of another copy=>paste from the top down they changed it up quite a bit but i'm not sure it's for the better. the monsters do 90% of the work. you keep finding new more powerful monsters and that makes combat much easier. you have the powers of link for a limited time so you have just the tiniest bit of basic zelda gameplay. towards the end you have an npc that is pretty braindead but you have to guide them along and it got pretty tricky. not fun ... just tricky.
functionality: 4/5
the game ran well in terms of bugs but it slowed down a lot. in some sections of the game it was a solid 60fps. then when too much starts happening it drops to 30. i wish it was a bit more even. maybe it will run better on the super switch.
