Similar to the previous three months, I kept my attention on games that would enable me to finish the HLTB 2024 gaming challenge, and I'm pleased to say that I did.

One problem with concentrating on the challenge was that I had to buy or get certain games on other platforms, so I didn't have as much of an impact on my backlog as I had hoped. I was able to reduce it from 144 to roughly 118.

Additionally, I tended to play shorter games so that I finish the challenge, so the larger games in my backlog are still there. I'll probably skip the 2025 challenge next year, concentrate on longer games, and continue to purchase just one game for every four I complete – I even managed to resist getting anything on the Winter Sale!

My six completion over December were 2 middle-sized, 2 small and 2 tiny outings. They included 3 different systems and 1 DLC.

05-Dec-2024 - God of War II (PS3) – 11H45M
06-Dec-2024 - Cube Escape: The Cave (PC) – 2H14M
09-Dec-2024 - We Happy Few - Roger & James in They Came From Below (DLC) (PC) – 2H29M
11-Dec-2024 - Kirby's Dream Land (Game Boy) – 1H45M
16-Dec-2024 – Before Your Eyes (PC) – 1H45M
20-Dec-2024 – Dead Synchronicity: Tomorrow Comes Today (PC) – 6H27M

God of war II was a more streamlined game than it’s predecessor: Better control scheme, less time based sequences and more interesting bosses. Overall I enjoyed it more than the first one, and completing it meant I finished the God Of War collection for the PS3, and ticked off one of the HLTB 2024 challenge categories.

I enjoy the quarky world of rusty lake, and played more of them over the years. The Cave was the last one in the Cube escape series, with an interwoven and interesting game design than most of the others in this lost running series.

Kirby Dream Land (Game Boy) and Before your eyes were the last two games I needed to complete the HLTB 2024 challenge so I finished both in single sittings. Kirby is really old so except for nostalgia there is not much to talk about. Before you eyes has an interesting gimmick where you control the game progress with your eyes. It did not work well for me (wearing glasses) so I played it with a mouse – and with that it becomes an okay, well told, visual novel.

With the challenge out of the way – I’m starting to mop up DLC’s and all sorts of bits and bobs. “Roger & James in They Came From Below” is a DLC for “We Happy Few” that I finished earlier in the year. I enjoyed it’s small, curated space more than the randomly generated large empty world of the base game. It was cute and I’m looking forward for the other DLC’s that I already own.

Dead Synchronicity: Tomorrow Comes Today is a point and click adventure. I fell out of love with that genre so it takes me a bit of effort to tackle those games but I felt I needed to finish at least one this year. Mostly the puzzles made sense, with only a couple feeling like obtuse. However, I didn’t like the subject matter, the graphic and the ending so no great fun here. I did somehow managed to get through it.

My Game Size Guide:
Tiny (0-2 hours), Small (2-6 hours), Medium (6-14 hours), Large (14-30 hours), Very Large (30-62), Epic (62+)

I had quite a bit going on in December, which meant quite a bit of time spent on other stuff and less time spent on video games. I did however manage to get two completions this month, so one up compared to November at least.

Untitled Goose Game - Dec 26
Super Mario Land - Dec 31

Untitled Goose Game was one of those games that I really wanted to play but never went out of my way to buy, so seeing that I had some time with my cousin's PS5 I thought that I could playthrough it and I enjoyed it quite I bit like expected. Very simple premise that the game gets a lot out of, very enjoyable scenarios in this game and it's fun to figure out what to do and then execute it. Very much a game I could see myself playing through again since that Platinum Trophy seems very much within reach, but once again a game I didn't own and only had the time to simply finish. Then earlier today I picked up Super Mario Bros. 2 again, but I realised again why I put it down and I simply didn't have a good time with it so I dropped it, meaning it will remain the only unfinished game out of the NES mainline Mario titles. I simple moved on to Super Mario Land instead and that was a fun little time, took over two hours still because of you having to restart when getting a Game Over but since the game is short it wasn't a huge issue and I enjoyed that. A lot of time this month was spent with Rayman Origins, so that should hopefully be cleared sometime in January. Main game I'm planning to play is Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep and I really want to achieve that platinum, which should be a journey. A chance that I don't pick it up and I focus more on smaller games again, but hoping to finally get to replaying it next month.

Quest for Glory: Shadows of Darkness

All but one were itchmas or related games. Quest for Glory was the exception of course. I had a great time with it and it's now my favourite in the series so far and likely to remain so since I doubt the fifth and final game will knock it off its podium.

First time poster here! I've gotten a lot more into gaming this month, finally attacking the backlog I've gathered for years. Most of these are short games because I'm starting with those and making my way up.

12/1: KinitoPET - 1h 15m
12/1: Duck Detective - 1h 30m
12/2: Pupperazzi - 1h 45m
12/2: Mouthwashing - 2h 10m
12/2: Bread & Fred - 3h 15m
12/4: Little Inferno - 2h 30m
12/6: Tiny Terry's Turbo Trip - 3h 30m
12/7: Smushi Come Home - 4h
12/8: We Were Here Forever - 11h
12/9: Here Comes Niko! - 3h 45m
12/10: We Were Here Expeditions - 1h 30m
12/14: MiSide - 3h 40m
12/14: Neva - 5h 10m
12/14: Stars in the Trash - 1h
12/15: Planet of Lana - 4h 40m
12/24: Stray - 4h 30m
12/25: There Is No Game Wrong Dimension - 4h 5m
12/26: Lost in Play - 4h 10m
12/27: Poi - 6h
12/28: Costume Quest - 5h 35m
12/29: American Arcadia - 6h
12/30: Minami Lane - 3h
+ I'm probably finishing Goodbye Volcano High today

I enjoy most of the games that I complete because I tend to retire games after playing the first 25% if I'm not liking them, but there were still 2 games I didn't enjoy much this month:
- Pupperazzi: was just too repetitive for me to enjoy after the first hour or so
- Little Inferno: liked the first half, not the second

My favorite games of the month were:
- Smushi Come Home: cute little platformer, not the best game ever but had a lot of fun with it
- We Were Here Forever: fourth and (imho) best installment in the series
- MiSide: went into this blind and had a great time
- Neva: big fan of gris, and though this was much different gameplay-wise, still a beautiful experience
- Stray: was excited for this for a long time, def understood the hype
- American Arcadia: underrated asf, one of my favorite games i've played so far story-wise

I'm excited to play games with a bit more substance next month! I think the next game I'm going to pick up is Animal Well- I don't really play metroidvania games but I've heard good things, so I'm going to give it a shot.

A better December than I had expected. Managed to beat 2 games, which let me tie 2021 in the amount of games beaten.

December 15th - Outer Wilds - 27h 24m - (Main+) 8/10 - Started December 5th - 10 Days Taken - Beat the main game and the DLC. Got 5/31 achievements.
December 23rd - Monument Valley 3 - 1h 48m - (100%) 5/10 - Days Taken: Same Day - Beat all the levels.

Short TLDR of my review:
Outer Wilds - Great concept, but the DLC was a little frustrating.
Monument Valley 3 - Disappointing, puzzles very too easy and story was minimal.

Only one completion for me this month 😞

12/03 - Time Bandit (Main+Extras 9h:28m)

It was actually a pretty fun dystopian Sokoban-lite, Metal Gear Solid 1 inspired experience. It ends abruptly on a cliffhanger though, hopefully the dev is able to release the other part(s).

I don't know what happened, but I blinked and beat 20 games this month. This is by far the most games I've ever beaten in one month and I'm shocked I managed to do it.

12/1 Balatro (PC-Steam): 5:10 9/10
12/1 Resident Evil 5: Lost in Nightmares DLC (PS4): 1:09
12/1 Resident Evil 5: Desperate Escape DLC (PS4): 0:41
12/4 FlingSmash (Wii): 2:48 6/10 - WORST
12/6 Deus Ex: Mankind Divided (PS4): 13:22 8/10
12/8 Castlevania: Lament of Innocence (PS2): 8:40 7/10
12/9 The Vanishing of Ethan Carter (PC-Epic): 2:45 7/10
12/11 Yoshi's New Island (3DS): 5:03 6/10
12/12 Demon's Tilt (PC-Epic): 1:14 9/10
12/14 God of War (PS2): 12:54 6/10
12/16 Battle Tanx (N64): 3:13 7/10
12/16 Cryptmaster (PC-Steam): 9:30 9/10 - BEST
12/23 Dragon Quest (NES): 17:40 6/10
12/24 Bayonetta (Wii U): 12:14 7/10
12/28 Call of Juarez: Gunslinger (PC-Steam) (Replay): 3:37 9/10
12/28 Metal Slug (PC-Steam): 0:41 6/10
12/29 Portal (PC-Steam) (Replay): 1:19 9/10
12/29 Day of the Sandwich (Browser-Itch.io): 0:14 6/10
12/30 SUPERHOT (PS5) (Replay): 1:14 7/10
12/31 Silent Hill 2 Remake (PS5): 15:42 8/10

Cryptmaster is an insanely underrated game and is my personal Game of the Year (not that I played many games that came out this year). The Cryptmaster can be really funny at times and the puzzles really made me think, I always enjoy decoding fictional languages. I love the game's artstyle, it's ugly but very stylized and it ends up looking great. Play this game, it's great.

FlingSmash isn't particularly bad, but it's not very fun. It feels like Zip never goes in the direction you want him to. At least it's short.

Managed to beat around 13-15 games this month:

1. Silent Hill 2(2001) - 5/10
2. Tekken Tag Tournament - 7/10
3. Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order - 8/10
4. Ghost Recon Wildlands - 6/10
5. Castlevania: Order of Eccelsia - 5/10
6. Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy - 8/10
7. Wolfenstein: The Old Blood - 8/10
8. Assassin's Creed 3 - 6/10
9. Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City - Echo Six Expansion(HLTB views this as 3 entries but I'm going to count it as one) - 7/10
10. Silent Hill 3 - 8/10
11. Star Wars: Jedi Survivor - 8/10
12. El Paso, Everywhere - 7/10
13. Sprawl - 6/10

Worst: SH2(2001) - This was a carry over from November however

Best: Jak and Daxter, Wolfenstein TOB and Star Wars Jedi games

Surprise: Star Wars Jedi games

I really enjoy SW Jedi games more than I was expecting to. The difficulty options are accomdating of anyone of any skill level but what I really love is platforming and exploration since these carry the philosophy of a metroidvania in the context of a Jedi and Star Wars. It also has a lot of adventuring and they don't overly hold your hand either. My only gripe and this is just with Disney Star Wars in general is how much the Episode 3-4 timeframe gets milked, there are so many main characters running around in this time frame now and even some who managed to outlast the Empire itself is just laughable. These games even want you to believe that Cal Kestis has a shot at beating Vader and they are destined to have one climatic duel that decides everything. Vader is the OP villain to this timeline what Palpatine is to the Prequels era all though at least Palpatine is entertaining while Vader is just a wannabe slasher movie villain with how much these stories want you to think he is menancing. I do enjoy these games but I try not to avoid thinking about the story too hard because when I do, I write stuff like the sentances I wrote just now. I prefer Jedi Outcast's approach of taking place after ROTJ.

Jedi Survivor's story is terrible but the fact that it ignores the video game sequel trope of character losing all his powers at the start of the game makes respect it a great deal. I would LOVE a Metroid game where Samus doesn't lose her powers at the start of the game and it has her base abilties but new ones get added on top of that. Jedi Survivor is proof that you can do this.

Pretty busy month for me overall, and I didn't get around to as many games as I would have liked. That said, there were a lot of fun smaller game completions. My favorite game this month was probably classic Tomb Raider, which was not something I would have expected when I first started this game at the start of the month, but I really came to like this game once I got a good hang of things. My least favorite game was probably Tattletale, which doesn't surprise me as it's a pretty bare-bones mascot horror game. Anyways Happy New Years to all and I can't wait to see what this new year has in store.

Mass Effect | PS5 | 75%
Stiff and poorly mapped by today's standards but I enjoyed my time playing it. I never got to play the series on my Xbox 360 growing up, but I can appreciate why this game was so popular back then. It feels like your decisions and the combat carry narrative weight, and that unless you want to open your journal or map every few minutes you have to actively engage with the story to figure out where to go next. Initially, I thought it was moving too slowly, but realized I had been playing this game for over three hours at a time.

This Bed We Made | PS5 | 65%
I appreciate this game as a meditation on hiding who you are and the consequences/lengths you’ll eventually succumb to for suppressing yourself for so long, but wow do the narrative stakes not pan out during gameplay. There’s always an unnerving feeling that you can get caught at any moment, or that messing around with guests’ belongings will get you in trouble…but nothing ever happens. Interesting ideas and I like some investigative detective work, but nothing really pans out and wow do the character models either look like the Joker or have misshapen proportions.

Hardspace: Shipbreaker | PS5 | 85%
Replayed from earlier in the year- I still love labor rights and job simulators, but I didn’t realize how this game does not let you skip any story beats. Also, its poor optimization for its many particle effects felt more pronounced this time around.

Cocoon | PS5 | 95%
What a trip, this game makes you feel like you’re solving a Rubik’s cube in zero-gravity. Its visuals, logical puzzle design, sound design, and score are some of the best out there. Its abstract story is told without words, but in nearly every aspect I could feel the hard work of all the developers who worked on this game. The tedium of backtracking and solving puzzles did wear on me eventually, as did some of the un-readability of the environment design, but Cocoon definitely stole a spot in my top 10 for the year at the last minute.

The Operator | Mac | 75%
As with This Bed We Made, I do like some investigative detective work, and I did enjoy the bomb defusing simulator, but wow did it get redundant and wow was the dialog here stilted and not aligned to the period of time it takes place in. Initially it feels like you’re a paper pusher for the feds, but its off-the-rails conspiracy theorist plot kept me paying attention. It feels like there’s too many layers to make commentary on anything, e.g. if you can trust the US government (probably not) or corporations (definitely not), but this game absolutely nails how to get you to feel uncomfortable.

Stardew Valley | Mac | 85%
Replayed from 2017- someone on TikTok said that picking up Stardew Valley is basically blacking out for 40-100 hours and even now so many years after its release is that true. I felt more engaged with it now that my frontal lobe has developed, and where I probably would’ve given it a 90-95% back then I’ve since soured on it a little bit. There’s some story beats I realize I don’t like, like Penny pushing George’s wheelchair without asking and then getting upset when he gets mad at her, but I think what I find most anticlimactic is how few dialog options there really are. Once you get married to someone and see them every day, they have around 10~ options year-round that they’ll say. Stardew Valley is mostly quality over quantity, but I found wanting more out of the romance aspects that you really have to work for.

My month of December was once again mostly filled with small, short indie horror games. My absolute highlight was Is This Game Trying to Kill Me?, which I can highly recommend to anyone who loves puzzle games! The biggest disappointment was Midnight Snack, but since the game was free and only lasted a few minutes, complaining feels a bit over the top—but I still expected more from it. Finished one game, then started randomly wasting time, then went to rewatch some of my old movie favorites.

12/08 Steins;Gate: My Darling's Embrace - PC (90%, 30h45m)

Paused:
12/10 Yu-Gi-Oh! GX Tag Force - PSP/Emulated (N/A, Dec. 5h35m, total 21h58m)

Game is too grindy, must have spent probably 150+ hours when I was a little bastard.

Pretty decent month for me.

Dec 1st - Arcane Break, 9/10
Dec 3rd - P.E. Noire, 8.5/10
Dec 3rd - | (Pipe), 8/10
Dec 5th - Creature Packets, 9/10
Dec 7th - Rental, 7.5/10
Dec 7th - Luigi's Mansion, 6.5/10
Dec 14th - Luigi's Mansion 2/Dark Moon, 7/10
Dec 20th - Luigi's Mansion 3, 7.5/10
Dec 23rd - Satisfactory, 9.5/10
Dec 23rd - Hogwarts Legacy, 8/10
Dec 25th - Halo: Combat Evolved, 6/10
Dec 31st - Halo 2, 7.5/10

My favorite game of the month is Satisfactory, it is a very addicting game that I lost way too much sleep to, highly recommend. My least favorite game of the month is Halo CE which is just pretty poorly aged. I wouldn't say I played any terrible games in December though, just a couple of good ones and a couple of mediocre ones.

So, I finished quite a few things in December, thanks to the holiday season.

Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn - The gameplay is the usual Fire Emblem goodness, though maybe a bit more difficult than it needed to be. The story is nice too, though it kinda runs out of steam by the end. It's predecessor was a more cohesive package, but this one is still good.

Eternights - An anime action game with romance as a focus. This one is a mess, it borrows from everything, especially Persona. The combat is extremely simple and the story is whatever. I wouldn't really call the game good, but for me it was an entertaining kind of mess, helped by the fact that it's pretty short.

Zipp's Café - It's fun enough. It's a spin-off game of Chicken Police, that's roughly 3 hours long. It's alright for what it offers.

Warhammer 40k: Space Marine II - This was awesome. An adrenaline bomb from start to finish. It constantly makes you go "Hell yeah, brother!" while making you feel like the ultimate badass. Its power fantasy turned up to eleven and I loved every second of it.

Chicken Police: Into the HIVE! - It's alright all things considered, but from a sequel, I honestly expected a little more. I was pretty disappointed in this one, actually, since the story starts slowly, it's quite predictable, and the ending is abrupt and unsatisfying. The first Chicken Police was a much more coherent whole, and I would still highly recommend that one.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War - It's a Call of Duty campaign, so you probably already know what you're going to get and whether you're gonna like it. I, personally, had a good time with it.

Sifu - This game is all about the combat, as there's little narrative overall, though what is there fits neatly into the game. The game is really good, it has depth and looks really cool. However, the game doesn't give you this kung-fu power fantasy without a fight. This is a really hard game that demands you to master it.

Ghost of Tsushima - It's a really nice game with a fine story, a slick and stylish combat system, and an open world that's fairly satisfying to explore. All of this is presented excellently. For me, the game had a bit of that "by the numbers triple-A production" feel to it, but I can't really say much bad about it. (I technically finished this on Jan 1 but since the majority of my gametime was before it, I'm still counting it as a December 2024 completion.)
