Happy Halloween! Or should I say "BOO! HAUNTED HOUSE!". I feel very old now.

Well, since no one posted this yet I decided to do the honors this time around. This was probably my best month yet this year in terms of gaming, mostly because I beat 5 Games and 3 out of the 5 Games I played were pretty good in general.

Deadpool (PS3, 10/01, 8/10)
LEGO Marvel Super Heroes (Switch, 10/17, 6/10)
Macbat 64 (PC, 10/24, 8/10)
Beeny (PC, 10/25, 5/10) - WORST
The Haunted Island, a Frog Detective Game (Xbox Series X, 10/27, 9/10) - BEST

I'll go in chronological order of which I beat the games. First off, Deadpool was a really solid Action Game that had some excellent combat and mostly responsive controls. I don't like the Deadpool Character in general as I think Meta Humor is completely unfunny but there were a surprising amount of times I laughed during this game so I do got to give the game that. The gameplay loop of getting high combos to get currency to upgrade abilities was a ton of fun and almost addictive and the game is paced well enough. The ending however is dragged out and it basically becomes just killing endless waves of enemies until the game says you're done. Also as predicted a lot of the jokes just don't work at all. Glad I managed to track down a reasonably priced copy on PS3.

LEGO Marvel Super Heroes was a mixed bag. The game has the same solid LEGO Gameplay Formula and I enjoyed playing many of the characters in this game and had a fun time with the puzzles and what not, but the story and humor in this game are god awful and consist of 5 Year Old Level IQ Jokes, Lame One Liners and Terrible Puns. The story makes every hero in this game look completely inept and incompetent because they keep getting their asses handed to the villains, the cutscenes are all the same, the end boss is frustrating to the point where his repeated lines every 5 seconds made me mute my Switch in handheld mode and the main menu and opening logos were EXTREMELY quiet on Switch. Not one I would go back to often but I do like playing LEGO games from time to time.

Macbat 64 was also pretty nice. It's mostly a homage to the N64 Rare 3D Platformers like Donkey Kong 64 and I enjoyed it. I found it to be cute, funny, filled with charm and nice and short. This is the closest I've ever seen to someone replicating the N64 Hardware Graphics Style without the worst elements from that system like dense and heavy fog and terrible draw distances. I laughed a handful of times and it's extremely simple. It's really cheap on Steam and is on Switch, so I'd definitely recommend it.

Beeny was by far the worst game of the bunch. The length is super short but since it cost a Canadian Loonie it was appropriate. But it's not fun. It's super shallow, takes 15 Minutes to beat, graphically it's good, the music is pretty killer, but the controls and gameplay and levels are redundant and too simple. I was not having a good time here and the demo for Super Kiwi 64 was underwhelming. I hope the actual Kiwi 64 game is much better.

The best game I saved for last, Frog Detective: The Haunted Island was by far my favorite game I played this month and was one of the funniest games I played in a long time. The sarcastic humor with the lack of sound effects and voice acting is utterly hilarious and it's a nice simple game mostly about character interaction and not really focusing on gameplay. I laughed so many times during this game and I genuinely enjoyed it. It's also the Second Game I beat on Xbox Series X believe it or not, having a year long gap between that and Forza Horizon 5. I can't wait to play the rest of the games on Game Pass.

Tons of plans for gaming next month hopefully. I pre-ordered Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III on PS5 so I'll be playing that on weekends with my friend PhatPotato. I'm going to definitely finish Super Mario Bros. Wonder next month as I'm nearly done the entire game and am on World 6. I'll finish up Frog Detective 2 and 3 on Game Pass as well hopefully and finish the last three of Siactro's games on Steam, that being Toree 3D, Toree 2 and Super Kiwi 64. I haven't had the urge to play the newest Forza Motorsport which is weird but I think I've just been so used to playing Forza Horizon 4 and 5 that it's going to take some stamina to get back into that game. I also want to try Jusant on Game Pass, considering it's an early Unreal Engine 5 title. I had a very productive gaming month and I'm happy for it. Lets see if November can do the same!

10/04 Mass Effect
10/08 F.E.A.R.
10/09 Lies of P
10/14 Pikmin
10/15 Dread X Collection: The Hunt
10/22 F.E.A.R. Extraction Point
10/23 Nun Massacre
10/24 DmC: Devil May Cry
10/25 Summer of '58

Lots of quick little indie horror games this month for Halloween. My favorite of all of the games I completed was easily Lies of P. This game surprised me a lot as a soulslike and is easily one of the best soulslikes on the market. The worst game was probably Summer of '58, as it's just an indie horror streamerbait game that doesn't really do anything all that special.

I have finished a couple of not-too-long games while I'm, again, getting through a lengthier visual novel.

Uncharted: The Lost Legacy - It's more Uncharted, can't really go wrong with it.

Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War 3 - It was alright, but not that much fun, kind of underwhelming. Especially compared to the...

Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War - ...first one. Now, this one was fun. I went back to this after the disappointment of the third game and was pleasantly surprised by how well this nearly twenty-year-old game holds up. It has its problems but it's overall a much better experience than the third one.

Quite a lot of stuff this time. Was hoping to finish up Half Life Alyx as well, but I've been too sick to be able to do VR for more than like 10-15 minutes, even more fast paced non VR games can be a bit much right now.

A couple of great games and a couple of FM23 runs, including my longest FM save ever.

- Football Manager 2023 - PC - 08/10 - 142:30 h
- Syberia: The World Before - PC - 20/10 - 13:07 h
- Cocoon - SeriesX - 21/10 - 3:31 h
- Football Manager 2023 - PC - 24/10 - 14:00 h

My favorite game was Syberia: The World Before. I enjoyed much the first two games of the saga, but the 3rd one was MUCH worse... This one was great for me. Nice story, graphics and music but easy puzzles.

I also have to say that I loved Cocoon, even when I don't usually play that kind of games.

This was a pretty good month in terms of gaming for me. It was quite a nice variety of games that I got to go through

Kirby & the Amazing Mirror - Oct 02
Another Code: Two Memories - Oct 12
Yakuza 4 - Oct 12
Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance HD - Oct 18
Soma Union - Oct 19
FIND ALL 4: Magic - Oct 20
Castle Crashers - Oct 24
Scarlet Nexus - Oct 30 (Technically)

I wanted to play Kirby & the Amazing Mirror for quite a while and was finally able to get together with a friend and go through it. I'm also well on my way with the plans of going through the mainline Yakuza games and the Kingdom Hearts games. Only a couple left for each now!

Soma Union was also much better than I expected, so I recommend that one and the first game in the series Soma Spirits. Last thing, I technically beat Scarlet Nexus, but now I'm going through it again on NG+ with the other protagonist to get the other side of the story. I'm about halfway through the second story now.

For next month...I'm guessing I'll be doing pretty much the same as I've been doing. Try to get some variety, knock out some long games I have had on my backlog for a while, and continue working through the Yakuza and KH series.

03 - Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty (Series X) - 9/10
03 - Halo 3 (Steam Deck) - 9/10
06 - Resident Evil 4 Remake: Separate Ways (Series X) - 8/10
07 - Halo 3: ODST (Deck) - 8/10
17 - Halo: Reach (Deck) - 10/10
20 - Doom 2016 (Series X) - 7/10
25 - Dragon Age: Origins - Awakening (Series X) - 7/10
26 - Halo 4 (Deck) - 5/10

I think I'm all Halo'd out for the time being. I was planning on replaying all of them but replaying Halo 4 and having a worse time than I remember previously having with it, I think I'll just call it with the games in the MCC. I'm currently playing Alan Wake 2 on my Series X and The Quarry on my Steam Deck - I'm enjoying both so far and both fit the spooky halloween vibe. I probably should touch some of my other consoles too at some point as its been Xbox or Steam Deck entirely for the last couple months.

On October ___ I beat [or retired] ___ and gave it a score of ___.

11 – The Last Guardian – 85%
20 – Devil May Cry 5 – 80%
22 – [DUSK] – 75%
23 – Black Mesa – 95%

Best
I never completed the original Half-Life. I remember starting it several times when I was a teenager but never getting into it. Well, thank goodness for this remake in the form of Black Mesa, the best game I’ve completed in several months. This is required playing, especially if you want a history lesson on the evolution of FPS games.

Worst
Nothing was bad this month, but my two top picks of the month also had the lowest lows. Black Mesa’s final chapter dragged the game out to an absurd degree. I thought it was over after Xen, which itself lasted too long, but then there was like two more hours of climbing the most pointless tower ever in Interloper before the end. And The Last Guardian occasionally transported me to my own personal hell. Trying to get Trico to do what you want was as frustrating as dealing with a real pet! The climbing around and “combat” in that game were also pretty bad.

For the month of October, I have beaten 28 games, which consist of mostly indie games.

I haven't completed any major games for the month; I only progressed some. My favorite game for this month would be The Quarry since I really like how it feels like a classic horror film just with interactions and gameplay.

Three games this time:
Oct 06, 2023 - F.E.A.R. - 8h 27m
Oct 21, 2023 - F.E.A.R. Extraction Point - 5h 12m 3s
Oct 26, 2023 - F.E.A.R. Perseus Mandate - 6h 6m 30s
Ranking 3rd - F.E.A.R. Perseus Mandate - A pretty pointless expansion to the first F.E.A.R. game
2nd - F.E.A.R. - Pretty dull shooter with some cool weapons and slow down features but poor performance and uninspiring levels
1st - F.E.A.R. Extraction Point - A big improvement on the base game. Much better performance and interesting levels but unfortunately has a rather nonsensical story

Given the state of the semester, I'll probably have to dial it down this month, or stick to smaller experiences...

Beat 4 games this month, which is pretty good by my standards. Although they were all mostly on the shorter side.
(My own game doesn't really count, that was a formality more than anything.)

October 7th - Golden Idol Mysteries: The Lemurian Vampire - 5 h 36 m - (100%) 8/10 - Beat all three cases. Only had to use one hint on the second case.

October 7th - Before Your Eyes - 1 h 59 m - (100%) 7/10 - Beat the game.

October 19th - Ghosts of Cathora - 28 m 8 s - (100%) NR - Beat all the levels.
Fastest speedrun time 7 m 25 s.

October 22nd - Viewfinder - 7 h 12 m - (Main+) 7/10 - Beat all of the levels and got 33/46 achievements.

October 22nd - Deltarune - 21 h 6 m - (100%) 10/10 - Beat the two chapters that are currently available and did all possible routes.

Super short TLDR of my reviews for each game:

Golden Idol Mysteries: The Lemurian Vampire: Difficulty curve was the worst out of all of them.

Before Your Eyes: More emotional than expected.

Ghosts of Cathora: Beat my time I dare you!

Viewfinder: Fun perspective puzzle game that's a little too easy.

Deltarune: Even better than Undertale.

Second month in a row with no completions for me 😅. Admittedly have been more focused on catching up on making my video reviews in my free time than actually gaming, which is kind of ironic. Plus my main games going (Tears of the Kingdom and Fire Emblem Engage) are both on the longer side so that doesn’t help.
