Well, it's near the end of the year and I think it's time for us all to look back on all our completions! This year saw me go through a huge change in my gaming life, specifically becoming tired of FPS Games and playing games in different genres by the halfway point. But yeah! There were many memorable moments this year in terms of the games I played, so lets talk about it!
This year I completed 37 Games which is my best stats in a couple of years since 2020. I even managed to play Xbox Series X for the first time in a year without using it as my Film Streaming machine! Hell, I even got two PS3 games in there considering I'm becoming more intrigued by the system nowadays. Again, most of my completions were on PC. I'm actually shocked how little games on my PS5 I beat this year and technically one of them isn't a Native PS5 game. November also was my best month since April 2020. My ratings have become more critical in the past year as well. I've given a couple games pretty low ratings this year and only one game managed to scrape by with a 10/10.

AMID EVIL: The Black Labyrinth (PC, 12/18, 9/10)
WOW! That's a lot. The most memorable moments this year for me was playing the Frog Detective Trilogy on Game Pass which I loved. Short, Character and Story Driven Comedy Adventure games that are hilarious with engaging if predictable stories. I also played Quake II and all it's content which was... exhausting to say the least. I also played developer Siactro's 5 Games on Steam and I loved Macbat 64 the best. What a legend! The first half of the year made me get frustrated and tired of FPS Games and so once I played Lil Gator Game the doors broke down and now I feel like I've been missing so much. Lil Gator Game is my GOTY and by that I mean it's the best game I played all year, not the best game that came out this year. That would have to go to Super Mario Bros. Wonder, which is a fantastic Platformer that continues to showcase why Nintendo is the king of First Party exclusives for me. AMID EVIL and it's Black Labyrinth expansion were fun and refreshing too. I played a couple of Half-Life 2 mods but the one I'd recommend is Evacuation as Amalgam plays it WAY too safe. I barely remember anything about Dread Templar so that game honestly didn't make quite a lasting impression on me. A Short Hike ruled also. Biomutant was a great way to immerse myself in a game world and was a good way of calming myself down. Relaxing game world, great music, gorgeous graphics, interesting world but too much looting and repetitiveness. Still worth checking out if you can get into it. Just make sure to turn the narrator voice off and just have gibberish on.
Anyways, Lil Gator Game changed my gaming life and is now up there with my favorite games of all time just because of the impact it gave me. It did what Half-Life did 14-15 Years Ago to me and made me fall in love with not just gaming, but my gaming blog this year again!
Next year will be certainly a change for me. I'm planning to play more games in differing genres while having FPS games at a minimum if I can. I want to replay Halo 1-3 and Reach and finish 4, 5 and Infinite, but I don't know when that'll be. The games I want to play are mostly platformers, RPGs, Action Adventures, Open World games, Character Action games and more relaxing, chill games. I'm going for quality, not quantity. So anything that peaks my interest I'll play it. I don't know what games will be in store for next year but I'm excited! Have a Happy New Year everyone and stay safe out there! Managed to beat 162 games this year. It's a lower than 2021 which was 172 and 2022 which was 200. But I knew I was going to hit the wall of diminishing returns when it comes to the sheer number of game beats eventually. It's going to get lower starting next year since I am abolishing me beating games every 2-4 days and I am going to try out more RPGs and longer games since well, I own a number of RPGs and a lot of people in both real life and the various internet places I go to are crazed over the genre. I doubt I will find much of the genre that geniunely great but I want to try some out and try to break my 2-4 day beat addiction since even I am starting to find it unhealthy. Overall, I had varying degrees of enjoyment from all the games I played, I mean after all if I didn't like them at all and found them to be repulsive, I wouldn't have gotten to the end. Games aren't a passive medium like movies and require a time sync like TV shows do so if I didn't get at least some enjoyment out of the game, I wouldn't even have gotten to the credits.

I beat 45 games this year. This is 50% more than last year and the highest since 2013, when I beat 49. Woohoo!
Average time to beat: 14h 29m.
Total time recorded: 22d 22h 50m. A record high.
This is three-and-a-half days more playtime on completions than last year. Average time to beat was two hours more though; I completed more games, but they tended to be shorter. I also retired a lot, one less (13) than last year. I put good time into some of those. Actually, I guess I can calculate that retired time too...add another 54 logged hours for games I didn't beat (compared to 88 logged hours of retired games last year).
I seriously decreased my backlog and held my wishlist steady (even after the Steam sale, which typically erases all my annual progress!), which is amazing. In 2021 at this time, my backlog was 46 games and 48 days; in 2022, it was 44 games and 47 days; now, it is only 35 games and 29 days. My wishlist numbers 91 on Steam, and another 10 or so scattered around other platforms/storefronts.
I mostly nailed my goals of 2023 of cleaning out my backlog on every non-Steam platform/storefront. I got Epic games down to one (Death Stranding), kept Amazon games at 0, and only have 6 more PS4 games to go (plus 3 to buy). In 2024, I want to finish everything else on the PS4 so I can retire that console, and keep all the non-Steam storefronts at 0. Other goals for the year include: (1) putting some of these end-of-year data points that the website doesn’t track from year to year in a spreadsheet; (2) continuing to be attentive to review scores (the change to increments of 5 and me starting to use the PC Gamer review criteria to think about scores helped me be more discerning in 2023 [note to self: start calculating annual average review scores]); (3) knocking out the longest games in my backlog (those over ~50 hours, currently: Gwent, Binding of Isaac, Metal Gear 5, Death Stranding, Yakuza 0, and Wildermyth), (4) and as always, prevent that backlog from going up!

I only beat 66 games this year, the lowest number since I signed up for this website in 2019. Mostly due to playing longer games but I've also taken a bit of a break for the past month. For context, I beat 189 in 2022, 450 in 2021, and 98 in 2020. I played 73 total so that's a completion rate of 90.4% which is the best I've had for a single year. I cleared out my backlog of Xbox games and gave the Xbox One to a friend so I'm glad to get that out of the way. I like what TheOro44 and blindly did with recommendations and games to avoid so I'll list all the games I beat in order and bold the ones I recommend and italicize the ones to stay away from. I beat 72 games this year, my goal was to beat more than last year and I did so I'm happy, plus I set a new personal record for time played this year at 24 days 13h.
This year was very Metal Gear and Wolfenstein heavy. I went through the second half of my Metal Gear marathon at the beginning and I beat all the Wolfenstein games throughout the year. I also discovered a love for boomer shooters after going through Duke Nukem 3D.

Best Game: Terraria is a game I've been playing for years and I finally beat it this year, I love this game and I'll probably replay it in the future.
Worst Game: Wolfenstein: Youngblood is an insult to the Wolfenstein series and a disgrace to any common sense in game design. Everything about this game screams incompetence and I had a miserable time playing through it. Between this and New Colossus, I'm scared for Wolfenstein 3.

So, for a while, I have felt like I have finished far fewer games and visual novels in 2023 than in 2022 (21 to 31 in 2022), and honestly, the reason eluded me. Then I started counting replays and other titles that are not on this site and I arrived at a much more respectable 27 completions.
The other black hole where the extra time disappeared is Honkai: Star Rail. I only listed my completion time for that game as 85 hours, which was only really true for the release version of the game, since then, they added a bunch more content. In actuality, I spent over 436 hours on that game! Holy Moly. Honestly, even before I began I had a feeling that starting another never-ending live-service time sinkhole would not bode well for my gaming time, but I wasn't expecting that! Serves me right I guess.
In the end, all I can say is that my gaming habits haven't changed much since last year. At around 42 hours as average completion time I still mostly stick to longer titles.

Standout moments from 2023:
Deep Rock Galactic - An all-around excellent co-op shooter that I couldn't get enough of. It's full to the brim with both quality and quantity. Addicting gameplay loop, great community, and a near-constant flow of new content for free. It's just amazing, or to borrow dwarven parlance, truly Rock and Stone!
The Legend of Heroes: Trails into Reverie - The usual Trails excellence, even if I personally started feeling burnout from this particular cast.
Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - A nearly 20-year-old game and still holds up pretty dang well. It was just a lot of fun.
Fate/Samurai Remnant - Admittedly I'm a fan of the franchise but I still think the game stands well on its own. Good gameplay with a fair bit of variety and excellent story and characters. Bonus points for how well-executed and rewarding replayability is.

2023 was a weird year for me. I was coming off of ending a 10 year relationship and was still going through all the struggle that comes with that. From late 2022 and nearly for a full year, I only had interest in playing multiplayer games with friends, as socializing more helped me to heal. Thankfully I've been able to stabilize and get to a place that I'm comfortable and happy, and have been enjoying games a lot more again. I find it pretty funny that my completions dropped to their lowest since 2014, and continue to have dropped a substantial amount from my average ~270 games/yr over the past four years. That was certainly for the best, though.

Was most disappointed this year by Star Wars: Jedi Survivor. Was really hoping that after the messy launch of Jedi: Fallen Order this one would be cleaned up, but it came out just as messy and also just felt unfocused from a gameplay and story direction. The first was such a great new Star Wars story with awesome potential, but just lacked polish, and they sorely underdelivered with this one, though there were still some bright spots.
I'm hoping to get back into full swing in 2024, it also looks like there'll be a bit more time to squeeze in backlog games and I'll still be enjoying more multiplayer with friends.

2023 has been a slower year for me gaming wise, and as a result I've had the least amount of completions I've gotten in the past 10 year with 9 completions (and two of those are the same game) 😅. It's been a busy year and the addition of making my video reviews has ironically eaten up some of my gaming time too, as once those started I slowed down considerably. Hoping in the New Year I'll maybe at least get one completion per month in!

Played thirty games this year, with an average of 30 hours a game, and put plenty of hours into several other games I didn't finish.
Ys seven-30 hrs
Played a, I think undubbed version, that came installed on my pre owned PSP. I had already played some amount of the game, but I was pretty early into the game still.
Darkside detective fumble in the dark-10 hrs
Shadow hearts covenant-50 hrs
Initally found the game and put maybe six hours into it and then put it down for a long time. I picked it up this year got past the early part I'd left it at and played through till the end, pretty much. I ended up really liking it. I did most of the extra content like the character side quests and most of the trials, if that's the right word I'm thinking of, but not all of them.
Fire emblem engage-50 hrs
It's fire emblem. I like fire emblem a lot. I almost didn't get it on release and I'm glad I did.
Persona 5 royal-117 hrs
I've already played the first one. I played almost all of this when it came out and then finished the last part (final dungeon or two + final final dungeon + third semester) this year.
Ace attorney spirit of justice-40 hrs
Bought a long time ago and never got past the first case. I finally did, and finished the whole game, knocking off the last ace attorney game on the 3ds I needed to do. I have a few digital 3ds games left (shining force, earthbound, lufia) that I haven't finished yet.

Was very excited to play this when it came out on switch and bought it right away. Didn't really put it down for any long length of time until I finished it. Went through it a bit faster than I thought I would though.

Harvestella was a great game. I did all sidequests and everything and was sad when there weren't anymore sidequests to do. Just not all the post game stuff or 100% of the game.

I beat 29 games this year which is less than last year but still a reasonable amount. Although July ended up being a new record for the month with the highest amount of completions. Here are some interesting stats from this year's completions.
The longest game I beat by far was Persona 5 Royal with 182 h 14 m.
The shortest game I beat was Ghosts of Cathora with 28 m. However, I don't count that since it's my own game. The actual shortest game is Before Your Eyes with 1 h 59 m.
I 100% 11 games, got Main+ on 14 and got Main on 4 games.
January 10th - Super Mario 3D All-Stars - 95 h 1 m - (100%) 8/10 - Got 120 stars/shines in all three games. Although I didn't 100% the game again as Luigi in Galaxy. Super Mario 64 took 36 h and 41 m. Super Mario Sunshine took 38 h 19 m and I beat it on July 18th, 2022. Galaxy took 20 h 1 m and I beat it on January 10th 2023.
January 20th - Live A Live - 27 h 44 m - (Main+) 7/10 - Got the true ending. Didn't do any of the optional bosses.
January 23rd - Kirby Star Allies - 10 h - (Main) 4/10 - Beat the game.
April 22nd - FRAMED Collection - 4 h - (100%) 6/10 - Beat the collection and got all achievements.
May 8th - Golden Idol Mysteries: The Spider of Lanka - 4 h 6 m - (100%) 9/10 - Beat all 3 cases and investigated everything in them.

This year I was finally able to get into Open-World Style games. Its been a struggle for me in the past. Also was better at playing longer games in general. Breath of the Wild took around 3 months leading to less completions around those month but it was a good time.
