I guess I'll do the honors for the monthly thread this time.

This turned out to be a very productive but also VERY good month for gaming. 6 Total Completions making it the best of the year so far for me. 3 Games, 3 Mods (1 Mod a Replay)

SUPERHOT (PC, 07/09, 7/10)
Hatred (PC, 07/16, 4/10 - WORST)
Transmissions: Element 120 (PC, REPLAY, 07/20, 8/10)
Half-Life 2: Riot Act (PC, 07/22, 7/10)
Turbo Overkill - Full Release (PC, 07/27, 9/10 - BEST)
Half-Life 2: Rock 24 (PC, 07/29, 7/10)

Much of the games I played this month were of good quality and had some great things going for them. Hatred was not one of them. Manufactured Controversy to get people to play and overhype this not very good game aside, it's like a parody of what the developers set out to accomplish. Mr. Not Important is so edgy and has so many eye rolling one liners that even Infinite from Sonic Forces would wince at them. You go around killing endless civilians which gets boring, but most of the time you'll be killing endless police officers, SWAT units and Marines who have aim bot hacker lord skills that will get you killed in seconds. Getting health sucks ass in this game as the only way to heal is by executing enemies, but that's so inconsistent and most of the time you'll be shit out of luck. The game just feels overall pretentious and is wasted potential. I do think the idea of Isometric GTA where you kill everyone does sound like a good stress relieving time. Too bad they stick lives and continues all over the game and even then respawning sucks because you can't even respawn at different points in the map, it will kick you extremely far so you have to run all the way back to your objective. Bad game, forgotten for good reason.

SUPERHOT was good. Although in hindsight I dislike it a tad bit more and ended up changing the score to a 7. I love the dystopian cyberpunk feeling of the game and the narrative is very good. I also found myself intrigued by the style and originality, but I wouldn't call it a fun game to finish. Certainly worth playing for the interesting narrative and AR elements, but otherwise I feel this is more of a one and done situation.

Some of the Half-Life 2 mods I played were Riot Act, Rock 24 and Transmissions: Element 120. I always tend to replay Transmissions as it has such great atmosphere plus the Concussion Gun is a nice twist on the Gravity Gun. Not incredibly hard if you know what you're supposed to do and it's quite short since the experience goes for 30 minutes. Still worth it. Riot Act was probably the best of the mods I played this month that wasn't a replay. I had a great time seeing Half-Life 2's universe be expanded with a story involving Nova Prospekt from the perspective of a prisoner there. It's quite a challenge as well, but goes on for only so long. Although I am beginning to despise these obnoxious jumping puzzles where you have to stack shit on top of each other in order to get anywhere if you're clueless on where to go. Rock 24 is another mod set in a Prison, this time a collapsing one built on a rock! Certainly easier than Riot Act, but I do think this one is a bit more immersive than that mod. Plus the mod has some good custom music by the modders. All are worth playing, especially Transmissions.

Finally, best game this month goes to Turbo Overkill. A game I didn't like in it's Early Access Build but absolutely found to be a thrilling and pulse pounding time. It's not completely perfect as the game does outstay it's welcome (10 Hour Completion time), the game's obnoxious use of profanity is like if it was written by a kid who screams slurs in COD Multiplayer, plus some mechanics were certainly awkward to use at first and I was getting tired of it in the last 2-3 hours. But, this is like the best Boomer Shooter I've played in a while? Extremely fast paced controls, exciting and addictive gameplay/gunplay loop, managing upgrades, mechanics guns and alt fire modes was superb, the game's story has improved somewhat from the first episode, there's been loads of improvements from the EA Build and now things are much better with less game breaking bugs and better difficulty spikes on the easier settings. Music kicks ass as well. Haven't felt this much of an adrenaline rush since Doom Eternal. I'm glad this game got better during it's development.

I'm on a Forza kick again and replaying Forza Horizon 3, but I'll actually try to get some time in with Forza Motorsport 3 hopefully. I've been mainly using my new LG OLED evo C3 to showcase gaming, TV and films on it so who knows what the next game I'll play will be next. But I'm kind of thinking about playing Ratchet and Clank 2016 before Astro Bot comes out in September (which I reserved!). I also am picking up Cat Quest III and Visions of Mana this month in terms of pre orders, but Cat Quest III will have to wait a bit. Lets hope next month is just as good for gaming as it was this month.

Only two games completed in July, but they were both great games:

07/20 - Star Wars Jedi: Survivor
07/27 - The Messenger

Both are sitting in my top 10 games played so far this year. Survivor will likely end up being my #1 game of the year, I'm a big Star Wars fan. I played Fallen Order and this one back to back and they were my first 3D soulslike completions. Cannot wait for the third game. I thought The Messenger was good too, but it seems a tad overrated in my opinion. There were rave reviews for this one and I did enjoy the humor as well as the first half of the game. As I feared, the second half where the game turns into a metroidvania was a little more obtuse and dragged on a little too long for my liking. Still, I managed to get all the collectibles which I rarely do so I still enjoyed my time with it. I'm playing Sea of Stars right now and I'm absolutely loving it.

7/11 Mr. Platformer

7/03 Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree
7/16 The Surge: A Walk in the Park
7/25 Goat Simulator: Goat MMO Simulator
7/28 Goat Simulator: GoatZ
7/28 Goat Simulator: PAYDAY

Insanely massive amount of completions for me this month. This is mainly since I have been focusing on a lot of smaller games that I know I can beat quickly before I leave next month for a work opportunity. I also participated in the Itchmas event held on this website that happened last month with also led to a lot of game completions. My favorite game this month was probably Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree, which is technically a DLC, but a really incredible one at that. Besides the obvious for me, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, Dead Rising 2, and Observer: System Redux were some pretty big highlights for me. The worst of the bunch I played were Pretty Coo, Panzer Dragoon: Remake, The Surge, and Goat Simulator: GoatZ.

Still a quiet month with four completions but short ones and one I've had going since uh, late May.

Folder Dungeon - July 01 for itchmas in July
Day of the Hamster - July 06 for itchmas in July
King's Quest I AGDI - July 20 (licensed fan remake of King's Quest I)
Quest for Glory I: So You Want to Be a Hero - July 30

Very adventure game heavy.

Folder Dungeon wasn't really my thing but a cute idea.

Day of the Hamster was a mostly fun little point and click.

The KQ remake was interesting and a very impressive effort. I've not played three version of KQ I ^^;. I'm going to get around to their remakes of II and III as well, but they're in the process of updating them for compatibility with modern systems and other tweaks and updates too. I just missed the update for KQ1 by a day... their first update and a huge one at that, in over 10 years. Incredible timing. I have no idea how long it'll be before seeing the updates for II and III.

Quest for Glory is my easy highlight. I had a very slow start with it but once I got rolling I had fun and I'm looking forward to diving into more of the series.

A surprisingly good month for me. It had a slow start, and then what felt like a very fast end.

7/8 Teardown (PC-Steam) 8/10
7/18 Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance (Gamecube) 9/10
7/21 LISA: The Painful (PC-Epic) 8/10
7/22 LISA: the Joyful (PC-Epic) 8/10
7/22 LISA: Definitive Edition (PC-Epic) 8/10
7/25 Sunset Overdrive (Xbox One) 6/10
7/30 Dead Space (PS3) 8/10

I thought Teardown was going to take me a lot longer... and then I played half the game over the course of one day. I guess I had nothing else to do that day, I would just play for an hour or two, leave to do something else, and then return over and over. The game's decent, I enjoyed the puzzle solving combined with destruction, but the campaign was pretty weak and I thought the final mission was boring.

Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance was the best game I played this month. It has the usual Fire Emblem gameplay with one of the best stories in the series. Many of the characters felt three dimensional. Stefan is now my favorite FE character, I just think it's funny how he just appears and forcefully joins your group if Lethe or Mordecai steps on one specific out of the way tile. His stats are great too, he killed most of the bosses until he died to an unfortunate crit. My only real issue with the game is that the support system could have been fleshed out. I wish it was like Awakening where any character can have supports with most other characters, just remove the romance aspects and it'd be great.

LISA: Definitive Edition was initially a game I didn't like, but I decided to stick with it and I really enjoyed it. Brad is an interesting character we learn more and more about through the game, and the hallucinations caused by Joy are great. The gameplay was very engaging, I liked how each party member felt unique and had their own place in a potential team. My team ended up being Brad (obviously), Nern (infinite SP and TP), Birdie (an underrated powerhouse who also has a great team-heal move), and Tiger Man (a consistent powerhouse that can wipe out fodder enemies easily... he did fall off by the end though and his joy addiction was annoying). I wasn't a fan of the final parts after Area 3, I've never been a fan of being forced to do things I don't want to do (Spec-Ops the Line being the exception) and that felt like most of the end. When I beat it I wasn't sure how to classify it due to LISA: Definitive Edition's main story being both The Painful and it's Epilogue DLC The Joyful. I don't usually add the regular version of a game if I beat a G.O.T.Y or Complete edition of it, but this is one of the few exceptions.

LISA: The Joyful is a neat epilogue to LISA: The Painful that adds a new layer to the original story. The goal is to kill the seven warlords of the wasteland, and for the most part you do it alone. I enjoyed this quest, but it didn't really have much of an ending. The actual ending of the game has very little to do with ruling the wastes and I think that's a shame. It feels like the part after you've killed the bosses should've been it's own game because it's so different. Although maybe not, it's filled with enemies with massive health pools that don't attack. You just press the action button over and over again until it dies. If these last enemies actually fought back it could've been fun, but Dingaling went with this instead.

Sunset Overdrive was this month's game of the month. It was also the first game I've suggested that won! It was also the worst game I played this month. I'd heard that this was an underrated gem from the Xbox One's starting lineup. After playing I strongly disagree, this game is mediocre at best. The one thing everyone talks about is the movement, and yeah it is absolutely the best part of the game. It's so much fun to zip around the map and grind everywhere. One of the other things I liked were the animations for when you respawn. It makes dying feel a lot less tedious. The soundtrack was also good to I guess, I'm just listing off the positives since there's way more negatives. This is game is ugly as shit, which, to be fair, makes sense. It's was one of the first games released in the 8th generation, and it makes sense for there to be growing pains. The gunplay is a little boring, I found shooting while grinding like the game wants doesn't spice things up much and the enemies either get shredded like paper, or can take just enough damage to feel annoying to fight. The story feels like it was written by a team of 70 year old men who have vaguely heard of millennials. I refuse to elaborate.

Finally, I beat Dead Space yesterday. It's a really solid horror game that deserves every bit of praise it gets. The necromorphs could be genuinely unsettling at times, and the atmosphere feels very tense. The unique gunplay where you need to shoot off limbs helps each combat encounter feel unique. If shooting them in the chests was the only was to deal with enemies, this game would be very boring. My only problems with the game are the Zero-G sections and the terrible final boss. There are certain sections where gravity gets removed and you have to jump around, but the game is really picky about where you can jump and it gets very annoying. The final boss is just piss easy and massively underwhelming, I expected the Hive Mind to be a massive threat, I mean it brought down a whole colony and yet this space nerd takes it down in a minute.

Next month I'm planning on playing Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn and Cruelty Squad along with whatever gets voted on my blog (*cough* shameless plug *cough*).

I had a more productive month than I thought!

07/03: Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins | 70% | Realized this is when we start seeing the aesthetic and musical variety in Super Mario games, though Mario still isn't as fun to control as he is in contemporary games.

07/03: Pyre | 80% | Surprisingly clicked with high fantasy MOBA basketball, but there is too much lore in this game. Enjoyed seeing how this sets the foundation for Supergiant to make Hades.

07/06: Mega Man | 60% | Lots of bullshit and unclear instructions for how to play, as the standard with many NES games.

07/17: Kirby's Dream Land 2 | 75% | Having Kirby ride giant beasts seemed kind of superfluous but I enjoy seeing how every entry builds on the last.

07/18: Pokémon Legends: Arceus | 85% | Didn't think I'd replay this but I had the itch to do it this year knowing its sequel is coming next year. It's...much easier than I remember? But the writing is just as bad.

07/19: Ed, Edd n Eddy: The Mis-Edventures | 50% | Felt like playing a licensed cartoon GBA game from my childhood...and this one isn't very good. Very nostalgic for me, at the very least.

07/25: Cult of the Lamb | 80% | Similar to Legends: Arceus, replaying Cult of the Lamb was much easier this time around than before. It still has performance issues, and its DLC was free but it's inconsequential, and it kind of makes me wish I didn't replay it.

07/31: God of War | 80% | I played the 2018 game in 2018, but wanted to get into the series since my brother is a big fan. This has a lot of slashy combat and personality, but its UX isn't very great and there were moments with the puzzles, platforming, and timed challenges, that were frustrating due to unclear hit boxes, lack of affordances, and lack of time that made them annoying instead of difficult.

Another great month for me with 6 completions (including a really big one):

July 2nd: Kirby's Dream Land 3
July 3rd: The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind
July 8th: Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards
July 11th: Kirby & the Amazing Mirror
July 13th: Kirby: Squeak Squad
July 23rd: Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe

Many more Kirby games this month, but I only have 4 left! Morrowind was a very long completion for me as I went for a ton of side quests, it took me about 3 months. I enjoyed all of these completions to an extent, Dream Land 3 and Amazing Mirror were pretty mediocre, but all of the others were really enjoyable. Morrowind and Return to Dreamland are the 2 highlights for me, both fantastic games.

This was my most productive gaming month ever, and reminded me of the carefree days in my early 20s, when I would play World of Warcraft all day, then sleep on a cushion on the floor next to my computer, get up, play World of Warcraft all day, eat peanut butter from the jar, repeat, and generally disassociate from the world. (I now have a bed to sleep in and eat real food). I went to town in July, with 20 completions (by FAR the most I've ever done in a month) and another 8 retirements (though several of those I had played a lot some time ago and I was just cleaning out my "playing" list). After finishing and retiring some short/old games early on, I did a packed month of Microsoft Game Pass. I also have officially completed everything I wanted to play on the PS4 and given it to a friend. I am now console-less and, in addition to also getting rid of my Wii U and a bunch of DVDs, my TV stand is bare (and needs dusting).

On July ___ I beat ___ and gave it a score of ___.

1 – FAR: Changing Tides – 60%
1 – Rez Infinite – 80%
3 – Blind Drive – 80%
4 – Pilgrims – 60%
4 – Chuchel – 75%
9 – Happy Game – 80%
11 – Star Wars Jedi: Survivor – 95%
12 – Remnant II – 80%
14 – Brotato – 75%
15 – The Case of the Golden Idol – 65%
17 – Neon White – 100%
18 – Solar Ash – 80%
21 – Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II – 95%
22 – Rollerdrome – 65%
22 – Lil Gator Game – 75%
23 – Still Wakes the Deep – 85%
25 – Jusant – 80%
26 – Clone Drone in the Danger Zone – 70%
29 – Portal: Revolution – 85%
31 – As Dusk Falls – 85%

My retirements were:

2 – [Nancy Drew: The Secret of Shadow Ranch] – 60%
2 – [Mario Kart 8 Deluxe] – 80%
2 – [Luigi’s Mansion 3] – 75%
2 – [Velocity 2x] – 85%
4 – [N++] – 65%
22 – [Humanity] – 75%
28 – [Chants of Sennaarr] – 65%
28 – [Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess] – 70%

Best
Neon White was killer. I didn't expect to enjoy this so much. I found the design flawless. It's a stylish speedrunning game with slick movement, and I was compelled to get most of the ace medals and gifts. A very different type of game, coming in at #2, was Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, which improved on Fallen Order in every way. I can't wait for a third installment; I expect it will be phenomenal. At #3, I will lump together the two bigger narrative-class games: Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II and Still Wakes the Deep (and honorable mention for As Dusk Falls). I found each impressive for different reasons. The settings of Hellblade and Still Wakes the Deep are incredible.

Most Disappointing
I guess you can't process almost 30 games in a month without some not landing. While I handed out several scores in the 60s, I was most disappointed in the language/word/mystery games, The Case of the Golden Idol and Chants of Sennaar. This may not be entirely their fault; it could be me. I was into both of them at first, and then lost interest, largely because I wanted to interpret things differently than the games wanted me to interpret things. I still want to try out Return of the Obra Dinn and Heaven's Vault, because I know they are similar, but if those don't land either, then I will come to terms that this genre is not for me. The Case of the Golden Idol did a Bad Thing though and bugged out toward the end, which resulted in it auto-solving the last chapter and the epilogue and telling me "thanks for playing." All my deduction work, rendered meaningless! Oooh, I was mad! I was also thinking that Rollerdrome would be more like roller derby, with some racing, maybe with a Burnout feel, so that was a mismatched expectation (and I really don't like skating games where you have to do tricks). My last gripe is that as fun as Kunitsu-Gami was sometimes, I hated many elements of the UI. That game had so much more potential. Maybe a sequel?

July was definitely a month full of short games for me. So this list will be deceptively long!

Hidden Cats in Berlin - Jul 5
Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight (Replay) - Jul 5
Streets of Rage 4 - Jul 6
Love - Jul 7
Hidden Cats in Rome - Jul 7
Make a Good Mega Man Level - Jul 8
Hidden Cats in Santa's Realm - Jul 9
Hidden Cats in Spooky Town - Jul 20
Make a Good Mega Man Level 2 - Jul 20
Make a Good 24 Hour Mega Man Level - Jul 21
Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin - Jul 26

So...Yeah. A lot of Hidden Cats games, and a lot of Mega Man...The Hidden Cats games are fine enough. Not my favorite of the "hidden object" genre, but someone who has shared their steam library with me had them purchased, and they are good games to play when waiting for something while at work. Apart from that, I'm going through a bit of a rabbit hole of Make a Good Mega Man Level, which are kinda fun but more than anything interesting fan games. They are such a rollercoaster of quality and weird ideas that I can't help but find it charming. Will probably be playing more (all?) of those on August.

I also am just a couple hours away of finishing Tales of Arise, so it didn't make it this month for the recap, but will be here next month almost for sure. My backlog is looking rather thin to be honest, so unless I go on a buying or searching spree, I probably have my next games mostly lined up. Should be a good one!

I have actually finished a ton of games (by my standards) this July, mostly thanks to the fact that I was on vacation and deliberately picking shorter games.

Tamayura Mirai – It’s a visual novel that is a bit more plot-centric than your usual moege, and for that, it's a fairly engaging read most of the time. Other than that though, it was just fine. It wasn’t bad by any means just not that special either.

Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty – It’s quite impressive how much even the base game has changed and improved over the years. The expansion is more of the best that Cyberpunk had to offer, excellent story, memorable characters, fun missions, and great sidecontent.

Fate/Samurai Remnant DLC – Played all three of them and while they are not bad per se, they are nowhere near as good as the base game. A few fun additions but otherwise they are all pretty skippable unless you really want more F/SR.

Trepang2 – An incredibly high-paced FPS game in the spirit of F.E.A.R. It might be a bit too chaotic at first but once you get used to it it’s extremely satisfying.

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy – The story has its moments and so do the characters, although some of that does depend on how much you like our ragtag team and the game’s humor. The gameplay, though, is kind of mediocre. Still, a fun little game.

Hitman 2 (2018) – It’s pretty much the same game as the 2016 one, just with a new set of murder playgrounds. The story is just kinda there but the core gameplay loop is still excellent. Finding the most creative, complicated, and wacky ways to assassinate your targets is a lot of fun.

Merchant of the Skies - A simple little management game with absolutely no combat where you mostly sift through menus and do exactly what the title suggests. You travel the map, buy low, sell high, and try to manage your growing merchant enterprise. It’s pretty light on story, but the gameplay is excellent and addicting.

Industria – An atmosphere-heavy FPS game, whose environment and atmosphere are pretty nice, but everything else fails. The shooting is serviceable at best and the story never comes together, not helped by its incredibly short 3-hour runtime. I wouldn’t really recommend this one.

This month not only did I manage to beat Persona 4 Golden in less than a month but I also beat another game on top of that. So I'm pleased with myself.

July 9th - Event[0] - 3h 30m - (4/10) Main+ - Got the Together Forever ending and half the achievements.

July 28th - Persona 4 Golden - 114h 30m - (Main+) 9/10 - Got the true ending, maxed 17/23 social links completed 63/69 quests and got 37/50 achievements.

Short TLDR of my reviews:

Event[0] - Innovative aspects were disappointing.

Persona 4 Golden - Best main cast, too obtuse at times and one shit dungeon.

I see we've both been productive with Game Pass. I just beat As Dusk Falls on the 1st and have Still Wakes the Deep, Jusant, and Scorn lined up to play with a friend. Hopefully I get through all those before the trial is up. For me, I'm playing Sea of Stars and will work on Starfield next. That will likely take up the majority of the rest of my subscription time.

Yes, go us! I'm glad we both liked Star Wars Jedi: Survivor so much. I felt that game subscription time crunch we were talking about last month on that one. If I wasn't trying to burn through as many as I could, I would have spent more time exploring Survivor after I unlocked all the skills to get past all the obstacles. I still had a lot of surprising moments stumbling upon some secret bosses and whatnot, but I know there was a lot more to see.

I played Still Wakes the Deep with a friend too, passing the controller back and forth. Good luck with those longer ones, and enjoy!

Best Game: Prince of Persia The Lost Crown and Tekken 8

Biggest Surprise: Tomb Raider II

Worst Game: TMNT 2007

Prince of Persia was a game that lived up to my expectations but at the same time, there were some aspects that I found disappointing but it's still a great game. I'm amazed a game like this can be released by a major AAA studio that's not Nintendo. This is about as a close to a big budget metroidvania platformer outside of Metroid as there is going to be. I did wish there were more cinematic parries on bosses, the game just had a traditional autosave system rather than a save point system, and moves like the dimension platforming from the Guacamelee games got more use in the main story. Celeste's dash ability, double jump, and the grapple hook get some good use.

Tekken 8 was quite a surprise, I'm not into fighting games but this is the most I got out of playing a fighter since maybe Mortal Kombat 9 but with Tekken 8, I even did some of the character episodes and the game does feel pretty good to play. The normal difficulty actually feels accessible and is much easier's than Tekken 5's easy. All though story mode did felt more challenging than the character episodes. The story is surprisngly decently written, unlike Tekken 7, I had an idea what was going on and the production values are a massive improvement over 7 too, where that game had a bored narrator, Tekken 8 has actual fully rendered cutscenes. My only issue with the story is that it made it look that it was going to be the end of the series but it seems like there is more to come. The final few chapters amps up the crazy factor to 11 yet the series is still going to continue? Glad I'm not a game dev.

Tomb Raider II was a surprise, I had no interest in the game, and I only played the TR remaster for TR1 but 2 turned out to be a pretty good game too all though not as good as the first game mainly due to the "modern tombs" not being as interesting as the tombs from the first game, and the hitscanners and human enmies being boring and uninteresting to fight since they all can be beaten the same way and they all do the same thing. The enemy roster towards the end is when the game got interesting and I will say the constant health pack drops from enemies are the reason why I beat TR2 at all.

TMNT 2007 is the worst, I was interested in the game because it looked like Prince of Persia but it's not as good, everything about this game would better if it wasn't a movie tie in game, but compared to Ubisoft's other movie tie in game, King Kong, this game is pretty dull. It's pretty half baked in every respect but the constant checkpoints and the game's "short" length helped get me to the end at all. Levels can feel long though.

Overall, not a bad month for me. Got some good games, some okay ones and everything I played I got varying degrees of enjoyment out of.

Hello Readers,

During the month of July the following video games were completed:

07/01 Mega Man 7 [NS] • 3:51 ⭐⭐⭐⭐
07/22 Legend of Mana [PS4] • 51:45 ⭐⭐
07/31 Dawn of Mana [EMU] • 14:06 ⭐

Mega Man 7 is the winner by default due to the fact Legend of Mana was thoroughly mediocre and Dawn of Mana was a wretched, smoldering pile of shit.

Maybe the worst month of gaming in my life (just a tad dramatic)? Either that or I’ve become a lot more critical about what I play.

Currently just about to finish Rise of the Tomb Raider on my steam deck.
