Tomorrow is New Years Eve and thus starts a new year. And again, it's time to see our tally up every single game we beat this year. This year was crazy for me, I ended up completing 45 Different Games throughout the year which is again my best since 2019 (although, to be fair a lot of that was adding already completed games and doing replays so maybe my best since 2020?) To be honest, a lot of the games I played were underwhelming or downright bad and there were very few true winners that made the cut for my Top Games of the Year. I'm also changing how I am covering ratings now, with the games being ranked from a 5 to 100/100 scale which I think will help me give more precise and definitive ratings for games I play.

Okay! I'm going to try and summarize what I would recommend and wouldn't recommend! I know it's a lot but here we go!
First off, the underwhelming/bad stuff. Lunistice is an absolute garbage fire that is another in a line of style over substance nostalgia bait games where 99.9% of your deaths come from clumsily falling off the world making having a life bar useless. I hope you like being enraged for the majority of the game. It's art style can only do so much for awful controls, bad design and tons of frustration. Evoland might have been good if it stuck with one type of game, but it does multiple types of games poorly, not to mention the premise is conceptually flawed as you can't tell mechanics and technical things will just unlock or not. The worst piece of gameplay of the year goes to a horribly designed quest where the game wastes your time by having you talk to every person in this town basically saying "He went thatta way!" which is an infuriating waste of time.
I might have been too hard on Severed Steel and to be honest, I was. But in hindsight, I still think it's nothing great to begin with. Other underwhelming titles include Kirby's Adventure, which would later be surpassed by the better but still not amazing Kirby Super Star. South Park: Snow Day!, a weird Deck Building Rogue-lite 3D Action Adventure Cooperative game in the style of Left 4 Dead 2/Warhammer Vermintide games wasn't fantastic, but at least some of the humor was good, despite the fact some it the jokes will be as timeless as expired milk. Mario vs. Donkey Kong's presentation looked fantastic on the Switch but you're essentially paying CDN $65 with tax included for a bare bones puzzle game that isn't really all that fun to begin with. DUSK 82 is another disappointment and it sucks even harder because you would think David Szymanski would know better not to do something as dated and archaic as this, but this felt like a complete cash grab to capitalize on the success of DUSK. That's most of the bad/not so amazing games.
Here's some games I would recommend though! Even though I gave Yakuza Kiwami a lower score, I would still suggest people play it. The story was disappointing coming from 0 yes, but it was still a very addictive game to put loads of time into. The characters are awesome and the gameplay and world is still pretty amazing all things considered. It's a shame they didn't add bowling back for Kiwami 2, because I was desperate to play that again. Good game, but let down by a clumsy story. The Donkey Kong Land games on Game Boy are pretty good! The third one especially takes away all the dumb gimmicky parts of DKL1 and 2 and is the most consistent one so I would recommend that one mainly. For FPS Games, Doom 64 is pretty solid! And I can finally see what's in front of me unlike the original N64 version! Loved the new redesigns and sound effects for enemies and guns. illWill is like a Henry Selick film thrown into a Boomer Shooter. Has some originality to it which gives it extra points and the game ends up essentially becoming Indie Serious Sam which is never a bad thing! My replays of Doom (1993) and Quake have re-established my love for them, especially Quake considering it might be one of the single most important games ever made.
The Super Mario Land games on Game Boy are also worth it! Specifically the sequel, but the first game's music is absolutely excellent throughout. Star Wars Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II is a incredibly immersive game in the FPS genre and groundbreaking for focusing on narrative in an old school FPS Game before Half-Life came onto the scene! Loved the weapons, graphics, characters and story to this one. Turbo Overkill is my runner up for best game of the year, it's like Doom Eternal and Titanfall 2 on Crack. Shadow Warrior 3 also had Doom Eternal and Titanfall 2-esc gameplay and the story is REALLY good in that one, but I ended up enjoying Turbo Overkill more for it's endless energy.
Finally, my game of the year: Cat Quest II, While the first game was a fun parody of RPGs, this second game managed to improve pretty much every single aspect of the first game. It has a more epic story with lighthearted humor, the ability to character build two characters simultaneously and switch playstyle on the spot was a welcome edition, the dungeons have improved, the characters have seen big upgrades in personality as well, the graphics have received a nice shiny new upgrade, the gameplay and controls are more faster and fluent, the music is just as kick ass as ever, this is a fantastic game and I would absolutely recommend everyone play this. I'm going to start Cat Quest III in the new year and I can't wait for that.
Next year I'm going to take a look at my physical backlog, but I also want to at least get to some newer/recent games as well ESPECIALLY Doom: The Dark Ages. I will certainly replay Doom 2016 and Eternal this year. But my main goal is to clear some of my physical backlog so that I can avoid playing numerous bad/underwhelming games like I did this year. This year has not been kind to me and that seeped into my gaming life. I want to use my time better and also, I'm going to learn how to program and code this year by self teaching myself.

2024 has been my best year ever when it comes to gaming, i've never played this much and never completed this many games in just one year. In 2023 and the first half of 2024 I've been trophy hunting on ps5 and some games take so long so i didnt play that many games, for example in the first half of this year I've only completed 9 games, after that I took a break from trophy hunting which allowed me to play more games and that just reminded me how much I love gaming.

I played more games than ever in 2024, I cleared a total of 36 games and that excluded some games I played with friends alongside replays of games I had already registered here. Notably, I cleared everything in Cuphead, got 100% in The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past and Link's Awakening and I finally played the N64 versions of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask. Unsure if I'll ever have a year so dominated by retro titles again, but very glad that I got the chance to play through so many classics this year. Definitely still so many older titles still to be experienced, but I think I am likely to play more recent games since only 4 games released within the last 7 years. Many games were also very short this year, only one game took over 50h, can definitely see there be more of those in 2025 as well. Also intend to play more on the PlayStation 4 next year (still don't have a PlayStation 5, sorry), but Switch and PC will be used constantly as well. Another cool thing is that I managed to clear something almost every month, but missed out on April. 2025 might be the year where I clear something every month who knows.

I beat 16 games this year and 1 DLC, which I counted separately, which is on the lower end, but at least I managed to avoid it being the lowest since I joined HLTB.
As you can see in the following pictures the longest game was Fire Emblem: Three Houses at 125h 22m.
The shortest game was Passed & Present, at 14m.

My least favourite game would easily be the Tower of Doooom DLC for Sparks of Hope. Usually, I just include DLC in my review of a game, but I had to make an exception for this one, because of how abhorrent it was. It was tedious, boring, absurdly difficult and a complete waste of time. If you play Sparks of Hope, for the love of god, skip this DLC and play the other two instead. Those are on par with the base game.

I'm calling it, no more games this year. I beat 102 games this year making this the most completions I've ever had in one year. I didn't even plan on getting past 100 until around November when I realized I was close. The last time I got to 100 was in 2021, but most of those games were under 2 hours long. As you can see from the total playtime this year, that is not the case. The average days to beat is wrong since the feature wasn't introduced until I think October.
In case you don't know, 102 is the number of games on a page when using the list/box format like I do. If you sort by Date-Completed, the games I beat this year fit a full page which is pretty cool. I don't think I'll beat over 100 games next year or probably ever again, but at least I got to beat my 2021 score.

I managed to beat 152 games this year, probably the lowest beat count I have since 2021 was 172, 2022 was 200, and 2023 was 162 but I can live with that since I already knew it was going to be diminishing returns from 2022 and onwards. It might get even lower next year since I'm planning to play more RPGs and hopefully make it to the end with some of them. I don't know for sure. I'm wondering if I can get up to 1000 fresh completions by the end of 2025 and make it to the top 50 completions on the site by 2026.

I beat 69 games this year. This is 53% more than last year (45 in 2023) and the highest ever by a hefty margin (old record was 49 in 2013). Woohoo! I also crushed my record for most completions in a month with 20 in July, thanks to clearing out a bunch of short Steam games and a frenzied month of Game Pass. My old month record was 11 in June 2017.
Average time to beat: 11h 56m (last year: 14h 29m). This is the lowest it’s been since 2019, so I played more games, but they tended to be shorter.
Total time recorded: 29d 21h (last year: 22d 23h). Also a record by a long shot, as 2023 was previously the most time spent playing (since tracking backlog; I’m sure I played longer when I was into WoW before then…).
I also retired a lot, 20 in total, which is more than the 13 I retired in 2023. I put good time into some of those. Actually, I guess I can calculate that retired time too...add another 46 logged hours for games I didn't beat (compared to 54 logged hours of retired games last year).
I seriously decreased my backlog throughout the year, until the December Steam sale, and knocked down my wishlist. In 2021 at this time, my backlog was 46 games and 48 days; in 2022, it was 44 games and 47 days; in 2023, it was (only!) 35 games and 29 days and 91 Steam wishlist. Now it is at 41 games and 52 days and 66 Steam wishlist. When the December Steam sale hit, my backlog was about to be at 7 games at just over 3 days to complete. Steam sale, Epic holiday freebies, + I got a PS5 = backlog ruined.
This year, I played a lot (too much, really, but work burnout and being demotivated to do most anything else is rough). I actually beat everything that I had added to my backlog before 2024 (except Baba Is You, which I started), so it is remarkably current.
I mostly nailed my goals of 2024: (1) I finished everything on the PS4 and upgraded to a PS5; (2) I kept all the non-Steam storefronts around 0; (3) I knocked out my longest games; and (4) I brought the backlog way down. This was all before the massive December game accumulation, of course. This year, I would like to: (1) put some of these end-of-year data points that the website doesn’t track from year to year in a spreadsheet; (2) knock out some of the longest games in my backlog (those over ~70 hours are Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy; Spelunky 2; Noita; Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire – Ultimate Edition; Divinity: Original Sin II; Bloons TD 6; and Monster Hunter: World [all these combined take up 27 days, or over half the estimated time in my backlog]), (3) play new games on the PS5; and (4) as always, prevent that backlog from going up!

Average time to beat: 11h 56m (last year: 14h 29m). This is the lowest it’s been since 2019, so I played more games, but they tended to be shorter.
Total time recorded: 29d 21h (last year: 22d 23h). Also a record by a long shot, as 2023 was previously the most time spent playing (since tracking backlog; I’m sure I played longer when I was into WoW before then…).
I also retired a lot, 20 in total, which is more than the 13 I retired in 2023. I put good time into some of those. Actually, I guess I can calculate that retired time too...add another 46 logged hours for games I didn't beat (compared to 54 logged hours of retired games last year).
I seriously decreased my backlog throughout the year, until the December Steam sale, and knocked down my wishlist. In 2021 at this time, my backlog was 46 games and 48 days; in 2022, it was 44 games and 47 days; in 2023, it was (only!) 35 games and 29 days and 91 Steam wishlist. Now it is at 41 games and 52 days and 66 Steam wishlist. When the December Steam sale hit, my backlog was about to be at 7 games at just over 3 days to complete. Steam sale, Epic holiday freebies, + I got a PS5 = backlog ruined.
This year, I played a lot (too much, really, but work burnout and being demotivated to do most anything else is rough). I actually beat everything that I had added to my backlog before 2024 (except Baba Is You, which I started), so it is remarkably current.
I mostly nailed my goals of 2024: (1) I finished everything on the PS4 and upgraded to a PS5; (2) I kept all the non-Steam storefronts around 0; (3) I knocked out my longest games; and (4) I brought the backlog way down. This was all before the massive December game accumulation, of course. This year, I would like to: (1) put some of these end-of-year data points that the website doesn’t track from year to year in a spreadsheet; (2) knock out some of the longest games in my backlog (those over ~70 hours are Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy; Spelunky 2; Noita; Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire – Ultimate Edition; Divinity: Original Sin II; Bloons TD 6; and Monster Hunter: World [all these combined take up 27 days, or over half the estimated time in my backlog]), (3) play new games on the PS5; and (4) as always, prevent that backlog from going up!

So, I have finished the most games last year since 2019 which is pretty nice. However, that mostly comes down to the fact that I played a lot less huge RPGs and visual novels. I counted 43 games and visual novels. The two that the site doesn't count are the two massive live-service games I play continuously. While I have no idea how much time I spent on Fate GO, I do have some idea about Honkai: Star Rail. My time in that game now sits at 853 hours, and since last year it has been at 436, which means I spent approximately (this is not an entirely accurate number) another 417 hours on that game. I think it's only fair to count this as its own completion.
Overall, I'm satisfied with both the quantity and quality of games I played this year. Although I also played a number of notably less enjoyable titles, too.

Standout moments from 2024:
Disco Elysium - This is easily the best game I played last year, it is truly a masterpiece. The strength of the writing just carries the whole thing.
Total War: Warhammer III - I honestly expected to love this considering I sank nearly 300 hours into the second game. And this entry is every bit as good as its predecessor and even more varied.
Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine II - An absolute power trip of a game. A roller-coaster of constant epic moments and ultimate badassery.
Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty - It's even more Cyberpunk, what's not to love?
The plesant surprises:
Trepang2 and Necromunda: Hired Gun are both high-octane, fast-paced, and lower-budget FPS games that are a blast to play. Battlefleet Gothic: Armada 2 much improved on the first game making fleet battles really enjoyable. Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance is the game in the series where the quality of the story finally matches the strength of the gameplay. System Shock (Remaster) was just an overall really cool and well-put-together experience.
The not-so-good moments of 2024:
The campaign of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III is a soulless and incredibly mediocre thing. The shooting in High On Life is quite unsatisfying and everything in the narrative was really obnoxious. Industria has mediocre shooting and the story completely falls apart considering how much it tries to achieve in its incredibly short runtime. The Outer Worlds is a competently executed RPG that "works", but little besides. It had only a single idea to it and made the entire game about that, but since it wasn't an original idea to begin with, the whole thing felt painfully uninspired. Chicken Police: Into the HIVE! is fine, all things considered, but I loved the first game and felt pretty disappointed with this one. I expected much more from a sequel and the story just never comes together as it should.

For the second year in a row it was the slowest gaming year I've had since joining, as I got 6 completions this year 😅. Definitely had a lot going on this year so the lower number makes sense! Definitely had a fun time though with the games I did play even though I didn't get to game as much as I wanted! Had a couple more too that I have made some decent progress too that I couldn't get finished in time for the end of the year. I'm hoping between those and some shorter games I'll quickly get more completions next year! My goal is to complete at least 12 games! Might be too ambitious though since it'll probably be a busy year for me at least at the start.
