I liked each of the three installments I've played thus far, but 3 finally was the one where it clicked into place. Marcus controls more fluidly than ever, the campaign has great pacing and pretty much zero downtime and it actually has some color! Gears 3 looks pretty fantastic when played on a Series.Gameplay-wise not much changed aside from the mentioned fluidness, which seems to be a result, from a faster sidestep and more range on the cover mechanic but the amount of new enemy types makes up for that pretty well. In the end it's all about taking cover, shooting and throwing grenades, so what can you do really.
Never really cared about the story in these games and that hasn't changed, but it seemed like a decent finale and I liked the somber note it ended on. Probably wouldn't be the worst place to stop the franchise, but we all know it went on. Really curious about 4 and 5, but I'll take a small break from it for now.

Easily among the best graphics on the 360 and still one of the best co-operative campaigns to this day. Similar can be said of the wealth of extra multiplayer modes, like horde and beast mode. Brought the trilogy to a close in an epic and emotional way whilst also providing the most refined gameplay in the series. The soundtrack and voice acting are of equally high quality from start to finish too. The real highlight for me though was seeing Marcus and Dom through to the end of their journey - brothers to the end.Updated 1.5 Months Ago

One of the easiest gears of the 3 originals… companions ai is very dumb though… which makes the final boss very very infuriating (insane, solo). Rest is still there, cool graphic, nice story and non stop actionUpdated 2.5 Months Ago

Read more to see my highlights of the pros and cons the game offers. Overall it is a well crafted game.Good
- Characters are interesting. Their dialogue creates emotional bonds between characters.
- Main storyline makes you want to know what happens next, and plot surprises are unexpected.
- Conversations between characters are humorous while maintaining a sense of urgency in completing the objective.
- Graphics are amazing. Concentration on detail can be found on objects everywhere, such as armor, environment and characters. Light and shadow effects are implemented beautifully.
- The storyline is awesome. Especially Dom's story. (For those who played Gears of War 2)
- The game presents different situations for the player to use a certain type of weapon in order to be the most effective. The game offers unique and interesting weapons.
- Multiplayer gives immense replay value.
Bad
- Some may find the constant gunning down enemies and moving to the next area only to gun down more enemies a repetitive task, but the game tries to mix it up with different scenarios, which keeps it as fresh as possible.
- Sometimes you may find your teamates waltzing in and blocking your way while you are shooting an enemy.
- Teamates do not come to your aid immediately when you are down and in need of revival. (This may be intentional by the developers in order to make it not too easy.)

Is Gears written well? No.Does it need to be? No.
Did some of the jokes in Gears age well? No.
Is Marcus a good character? Yes!
Is the game still fun? Yes.
Gears is at its heart just an action flick as a third-person shooter, and it sets out what it tries to do perfectly. It's a good time, and respects your time as well. It's a damn good third-person shooter, and the third entry in the series has refined the gameplay enough that it firmly sets itself as the best one I've played in the series thus far. Marcus has his characterization hit a level that is really enjoyable, although the overall plot isn't that complex or intuitive. Some of the jokes involving Sam and Anya, along with some of Baird's one-liners, don't really age well though and just come across as weird at best or borderline cringy at worst.
But Gears isn't supposed to be a pinnacle of writing. It's a pinnacle of gameplay and fun times, and it does that well, so it deserves to be praised for doing that well.
I do want to expand on the Action flick point because it feels very deliberate and that's what I love about Gears. The way the mission structure is and the way it flows feels very intentionally like an action film. Like the way things flow into the next, the way boss fights happen, the places where boss fights happen, the spots where spectacle shots and cinematic shots are added, etc. In that way, I have to give them a lot of credit for that in the way it was designed.
I'll review RAAM's Shadow as well here since I don't like that it'd take up a separate entry on my profile. RAAM's Shadow was also a fun DLC, but it was marred for me by bugs, namely in Chapter 4. There's a section where Zeta exits a parking garage into the next segment, and the game automatically failed as soon as this happened for me, saying that "Drone has died". Who the hell is Drone?! And then upon taking the rooftops, both Kim and Valera straight-up disappeared from the game. Barrick was speaking to them both but they both were silent and were nowhere to be seen. So when me and Tai inevitably died during an ambush encounter in front of City Hall, I got another bug where I couldn't reload from a checkpoint. And I had to redo the entirety of Chapter 4. Not fun. But the rest of the DLC was fun, though. It had a lot of Gears 1 vibes (which likely was intentional because of when its set) and reminded me of how much I dislike E-holes as a mechanic, but if you want more Gears, it's hard to argue with what it offers.

Title: Gears of War 3Genre: third person cover shooter
Platform: Xbox 360
Region release played: USA
Year of release: 2011
Developer: Epic Games
Publisher: Microsoft Game Studios
Graphics: 4/5
Audio: 3/5
Challenge: 3/5
Fun factor: 3/5
Premise: The third entry in the most dudebro cover shooting franchise of the 7th generation. Be pissed off steroid abusing soldiers fighting aliens and doing squats. Grab a friend and split-screen co-op all night long. Finishes off the trilogy because Epic thought this was the end, but Microsoft said otherwise in the years to come. GoW3 remains an Xbox 360 exclusive, and a fairly decent one at that, so if you've beaten GoW1 and GoW2 might as well beat this one.
+Impressive graphics for Xbox 360.
+Solid split-screen local co-op gaming.
+Well made cutscenes with amusing dialogue.
+Chainsawing is great, but real men retrolance.
+You get to use mecha at times.
-No gameplay innovation over previous entries.
-The plot dabbles in melodrama at times.
-The aesthetic direction remains drab most the time.
-The middle game boss fight is unbalanced BS.
-The final boss fight is unintuitive BS.

I enjoyed the first 2 GOW games as fairly mindless cover-shooters but GOW 3 is actually a big step up from it's predecessors. There is a huge graphical and design upgrade in this entry, in comparison GOW 2 looks like the whole game is different shades of hard to see mud. Despite being set in a similarly desolate and apocalyptic world, GOW 3 is so much more colourful than previous entries. There is a more barren desert aesthetic which gives the game a more vibrant orange/yellow hue. The newer Lambent enemies are also a nice change of pace, exploding into tendrils of luminous yellow liquid. This makes them not only satisfying to kill but also more noticeable and aesthetically pleasing. Despite the gameplay improvements, the story of this game is still nothing to write home about. It's probably the best out of the series so far, but it quickly devolves into a series of fetch-quests and annoying complications that quickly balloon the run time. The story does improve greatly in the game's last section, introducing us to a cool new type of human settlement, as well as some very lush and beautiful environments to end the adventure on. GOW 3 may be the best in the trilogy, but is still a fairly average game with some particularly fun and refined combat. I'm glad I finally played the original GOW trilogy after wanting to for years, but it's clear that GOW is in a league below Xbox's other flagship series - Halo. If GOW really is Xbox's alternative to Uncharted, it's always going to be the inferior product in my book, even when it's at its best. Despite the criticism, I can't deny that GOW's combat is uniquely engaging and I will certainly be making my way through GOW 4 and Gears 5 soon. I think the Xbox One generation will be greatly beneficial to the GOW formula, both in terms of the looks of it's environments and the scale of the set-pieces it can offer. I'm also not particularly attached to Epic making this series in the same way as I am for Bungie/Halo, so I'm looking forward to see what the Coalition does with the series in these upcoming entries, I like GOW 3 but I feel like there is still much room for improvement in the years to come.Updated 1 Year Ago

The story at times is silly and doesn't make sense, it also takes a bit of shortcuts since the Lambent since the end of the second game is kind of a deus ex machina, but the game is still fun as hell. Great graphics (especially in 1440p 60fps on Series S), the same addictive gameplay, the script momentum of closing the trilogy with some great characters and voice actors. It might lose in Gears 2 in narrative consistency, but it looks better and is more varied. Once you start playing those games you cannot stop.Updated 1.5 Years Ago

Originally I had played a bit of the first GOW back in the 360 days, I got a few levels in and then unfortunately started to play something else that was newer at the time. I did the wrong thing and jumped straight back into this series at GOW3 and actually sat down and played this one until the end of the game.
I was quite impressed, yes the game engine mechanics was a little 'samey' at certain points but it felt like the story developed nicely along the whole journey of the game.
Some of the characters you got to quite admire (such as the COLLLEEEEEE TRAIN baby!)

Reliably fun and the assortment of weaponry is delightful. But it relies on a few twists rather than a consistent narrative propulsion. And no pun intended, it doesn’t feel nearly as epic as I expected the end of a trilogy to feel. And the color pallet shockingly lacks that atmosphere and grime from the first two. It’s just kind of a khaki color. And the ending is most certainly disappointing from a scale, gameplay and story standpoint. Still, it was almost always super fun and that image of Marcus catching his fathers dog tags is greatUpdated 2.5 Years Ago

This one has the strongest story out of the original trilogy for sure, but it still lacks emotional depth. The characters are shallow, and the dialogue is jarringly blasé when it comes to grief, but you know what? Who cares. Had a blast. Only reason it isn't a 9 is because it still didn't manage to top the "worm level." But it came pretty close.Updated 3 Years Ago

Gameplay 4/5Music 3/5
Graphics 4/5
Story 3/5
While it found ways to freshen up the franchise, with the new emphasis on Lambent units and the Stalks, I still felt it get a bit redundant in play style eventually. The story was OK...but I wanted it to be more militaristic like in the first 2, while here a lot of it felt more like the "stranded" - scavenging for fuel, food, parts, over and over. Graphics are always tricky when reviewing 10 years after the game debuted, and I'm sure it was killer for the time...and in many ways, I still felt it looked pretty good! There was just something off about Anya and Prescotts face that REALLY bothered me...felt almost like they came from an even older gen, somehow.
Music continues to be the lackluster, but "good enough" quality of Gears 2. It's a strong theme that's used well, but overall just lacks interest or intensity. Though Gears 1 music still ranks as some of my all time favorite of game scores, as it's just so frantic and scrappy sounding - it really gets you to feel desperate with the story.

The Gears of War games are all good games, but they've never been more than that for me. While this game has everything you would want a shooter of its nature to have: fun campaign, rock solid controls, epic set pieces and scenarios, tons of extra content and really great multiplayer options with tons of modes, it just isn't my type of thing. Anyone who does like shooters though should not pass this up! It also wraps up the story well, but sort of in a Deus ex Machina way.Updated 3 Years Ago

I only played the campaign because I don't give a shit about multiplayer so this review is for the campaign only. This game is on par with the last one and I loved every moment of it. The story is awesome yet again and the worldbuilding is even more interesting. The returning characters are lovable yet again, and most of the new ones are great too, with the exception of Jace, who pretty much has no personality. The gameplay is mostly the same as 2, which I'm happy with because there's no reason to change a good thing, but there are new weapons and enemies to fight. The graphics/environments are even better than before, and I really enjoyed the set pieces. And the music is as great as always.
Overall, I had an absolute blast with this game and I highly recommend playing it for those that enjoyed the 2nd game.
