I love these types of year retrospectives! I appreciate them in every app (especially Steam and Goodreads) that offers them.
Hoping one day HLTB comes up with its version too (I know there's a thread about it, so there's a chance).

I will post my Steam retrospective when it becomes available. Btw. GCTuba your image is no longer available.

Yes, it is a goal of mine to build one. The plan was to do it this year but unfortunately the team I'm on lost 2 key members and I've been doing a lot of work outside of HowLongToBeat.

Here's my stats from the site this year!

User Image

I'm going to try and sneak in Donkey Kong Land for this month as well and maybe the second one too, but I've completed 41 Games at the time of this post. This year hasn't been ideal for me at all and it shows in my gaming year as 2/3rds of my completions are games that are 6/10 or below. There are very very few "Excellent" Games I completed this year, but I'm hoping to rectify that next year by diving more into my physical based games and hopefully will find more bangers than whimpers. I also plan to add more upcoming games of course and dive into some my digital library as well to play things that never got touched or didn't have a lot of time put into them. And I still gotta attempt to finish Baldur's Gate: EE, Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning and Yakuza Kiwami 2. And I'm also going to do a replay of Doom 2016 and Doom Eternal plus a playthrough of Ancient Gods I + II to get ready for Doom: The Dark Ages which is by far the most anticipated game I'm waiting for next year.

However, despite the fact that I played a ton of crap this year and underwhelming titles as well, this is by far the most completions I've done in a year since 2019! I've been trying to balance a lot of my hobbies and work to fit in game time this year and it actually ain't all that bad! I don't know how next year will go as I'm planning to start coding in game development, hopefully starting with Source. As I'm turning 28 next year, I want to achieve something that will make me feel very good about myself and honestly, I've been more noticeable on design, gameplay choices, art and other aspects of games that make me want to design a mod in Source that will make a great impression on folks.

Anyways, it might be too early, but here's my Top 5 of this year (Not including games I've already played!) I'll update this again on the Games Completed - 2024 thread when it is posted.

5. Star Wars Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II - One of the few old school FPS Games to focus on a compelling narrative instead of just constant gameplay. I had a great time with the story, told wonderfully through FMV cutscenes that have aged very well, as well as featuring likeable characters, a unique roster of blasters and weapons and of course, making the lightsaber powerful but having it not be the superior option while fighting. Graphics are very late 90's in the best way possible for 3D Games and I was very immersed throughout the entire game. This is a groundbreaking title for it's story and released between Chasm: The Rift and Half-Life, both which are known for having focused narratives.

4. Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins - I thoroughly enjoyed both Mario Land 1 and 2, but 2 I think takes the cake for it's improved graphics, more selection of levels, good music and terrific control and gameplay only Nintendo could offer. Mario Land 1 may have the better music and did more interesting things but this is another great improvement and showcases the possibility of the leap you could go with sequels on Game Boy technically and gameplay wise.

3. Half-Life: Uplink - Despite being cut content from the game to act as a demo, this is still Half-Life at it's very best. Everything that makes Half-Life so good is in this demo with the same top notch gunplay, graphics, difficulty, set pieces and excitement and immersion you get in the original game. And now since it's a part of the new Half-Life package for it's 25th Anniversary, you have to pick it up and experience it.

2. Cat Quest II - A terrific sequel that improves pretty much everything from the first game. Gone is the satire and now comes a more epic adventure with a world to get invested in and a story that is awesome. Features the best plot twist I've seen all year and the graphics, gameplay, systems, design, music, sound have seen a massive upgrade. You usually don't get a sequel that 100% improves every aspect most of the time, but here we are. A must play. I'm beginning to love these games.

1. Turbo Overkill - It was hard to choose between Cat Quest II and this as my top contender, but this is by far my favorite game I've played all year. I haven't had this much of an adrenaline rush since Doom Eternal came out and it's by far one of the most exciting, thrilling Boomer Shooters I've played recently and is ABSOLUTELY worth playing over the majority of stuff that gets thrown into the Boomer Shooter category on Steam. It's extremely fast paced with tons of memorable moments and this is the first FPS in a VERY long time that re-established my love for the genre since Doom Eternal and Serious Sam 4. I love this game and it almost matches Doom Eternal in quality. If it wasn't for the overly edgy dialogue consisting of numerous F-Bombs and obnoxious cursing and if it was 4 hours shorter, this would have been perfect.

I'll be looking forward to seeing everyone's elses stats for this year! And I can't wait to talk about all the games I played in the 2024 Year Completion thread. Hope everyone is doing well!

My time on the Switch this year was basically dominated by Tears of the Kingdom, which I 100% earlier in the year and got super obsessed with so many hours went to that. Aside from Breath of the Wild and some other games, most of what I played this year was classics that I had never gotten to play so NSO apps got a massive amount of use for me this year. Banjo-Kazooie and Paper Mario were my most played NSO games of 2024.

Here's Soulsborne PlayStation Year in Review, yeah it sure ended up like this. Usually I play a bunch more games and I'll try and use the console more in 2025 cause my backlog is huge, but this year I got back to the Souls games after not having really touched them at all since 2020. Got the Platinum in Dark Souls II, replayed Dark Souls and Bloodborne and then finally played Dark Souls III for the first time and got the Platinum (also played some Rayman Legends lol). This year basically reconfirmed that I adore these games and I'm looking forward to play the rest of the FromSoft games. April statistics themselves look super weird and make no sense btw, cannot really explain that haha

Finally, my Steam stats. Just started doing PC gaming so this was really the first full year for me, though PC was not my most used console I still played quite a few things and really enjoyed what I experienced.

I've beaten 7 games in 2024, all on Steam (except StarCraft II):

Pentiment
Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order (Replay)
ENDER LILIES: Quietus of the Knights
Hollow Knight (Replay)
Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine II
Sheepy: A Short Adventure
StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty

My favorite of all beaten games was Hollow Knight but that shouldn't count because it's a replay (my third replay of HK actually, I've completed 107/112% and am proud of that). I guess the next best was Space Marine II. None of the other games was bad at all but if I had to choose one as the worst this year: I had the least fun with StarCraft II. Still a good game, just all the others were more fun.

I have started but not finished way more than these 7 games. Steam counts 29. Some, especially Rogue Trader, will still be beaten, just takes time.

The biggest time sinks among the retired or not yet beaten games were Rogue Trader, Skyrim (Replay), Medieval Dynasty, and Digital Combat Simulator (DCS).

I've put a lot of hours (over 100h) into Rogue Trader before burning out in Chapter 3 and then putting it on hold for several months. I have now returned to it and also its first DLC Void Shadows (here I've played for ~10 hours so far). Great atmosphere, great story, great CRPG, just a tick too complex mechanics for me. The DLC is absolutely fantastic. If you are contemplating whether to get it or not: get it! It's even better than the already great base game.

I would have liked to post two memes to express what I think of Rogue Trader but even though I remember exactly who posted one of these memes I can't - for the life of me - find them any more. Anyway, lame af text instead of cool memes:
Many (C)RPGs let you make decisions that would drive off companions, you might even (directly or indirectly) kill them. Although I've played many RPGs I don't think I've ever chosen to do so before, not wanting to lose a party member and their quests/interactions. But in Rogue Trader I've executed two (potential) companions because I play as a dogmatic character (the default in my opinion for W40k). "Why - a xenos companion? I shall not suffer xenos scum in my retinue".

Similarly, I often feel compelled to choose the "goody good shoes" options in games. I can't even bring myself to be mean in roleplaying. But in Rogue Trader I often chose to kill NPCs or ignore the cries for help of people on my ship because it just fits the setting. In W40k if one of your crew members has seen a daemon and you let him live, he might very well fall to chaos. Better to kill him. If there's a outbreak of a contagious disease on your ship and you choose to help the infected you risk loosing thousands to it instead of dozens. Much better for everyone to just quickly open the void doors and let the diseased be sucked into space.
I love how Rogue Trader makes playing a dogmatic character so natural.

I've been converting back to playing with a controller. For the last few years I prefered keyboard+mouse but now I choose the controller for any game that supports that (except for Rogue Trader - I'm not going to play a CRPG with a controller).

Plans for 2025:
I don't have many. Finishing Rogue Trader. I would love to play Silksong which obvi will release in 2025. It would be awesome if I could refrain from buying games and instead play the ones in my backlog. I think that's it.

@Everdred: all good! I understand that this takes time and you have other things on your plate. If it comes to be at some point I'd be very happy because I love statistics but if it doesn't: don't sweat it.

Both Nintendo's and Steam's wrapped released today. I'm surprised to see Terraria near the top, all of the hours I put into it were in March. I would've expected to see Elden Ring up there since I started a new playthrough and played Shadow of the Erdtree. All things considered though this does make sense.
User Image

Here's all of my top games. The biggest standout for me is Satisfactory, I started playing it less than 2 weeks ago and it's already near the top (it's very addicting).
User Image

And here's my Nintendo one which is a little less interesting.

EDIT: The new HLTB year in review is pretty cool, I'll add it here.
https://howlongtobeat.com/year-in-review/Dorobo

My favorite game that released this year is either Helldivers 2, or The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom. Some of my favorite games that I played this year in no particular order are the two I just mentioned, as well as Stardew Valley, The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Cyberpunk 2077, and Street Fighter 6. There's probably a couple that I'm missing since I played so much this year, but those are the main standouts off the top of my head.
