Itchmas in July #3 (July 2024)

It's back! Let's celebrate the summer with some free and short games from Itch.io. Nominate up to two games and we'll do a poll and play the six games (or more if there are voting ties) that got the most votes, reveiling one new game per day. The rule is that the game has to be available for free on Itch.io

The summer edition of Itchmas is always six games. It's in December that we do the full 12 days of Itchmas.

I especially hope the first one does well: It is actually made by a friend of mine who I've known for a very long time, about 15 years by this point, and is their first game project! I've yet to try it out myself but I am very excited to and I am hoping other people can enjoy it too! It was also made for a MenHera Game Jam so ay.

This time, we'll be playing nine games !

The first one is Folder Dungeon

I played Folder Dungeon and it was great - I died my first run, but managed to get to the end on the second (~15 mins total) - really engaging and once you get into the rhythm, the whole thing is quick and easy to understand. I really like how it made you actually have to strategise a bit thanks to the heat system, so you can't just hit every single "folder" and max out your stats.

Great start and a lot of fun!

its clearly more of a proof-of-concept than it is a full fledged game because its got a couple of pretty clear issues
The heat system is very easy to break. By the end of my run i had like 160ish heat which is way too much
As abatage said,the heat system is clearly meant to add a strategic element to the game, but:
1. It is way too easy to break. i just got like 3 of the flame items on the 3nd floor and had enough heat to explore every single folder on all the subsequent floors
2. It doesnt really work in a randomized setting. when i didnt have an abundance of heat, it was less strategy and more "oh god wheres the exit"

However, it's also surprisingly engaging and I do think that with more polish this'd be a damn good game. It's already got the fun part down, all it needs is a bit more meat on its bones and a bit more polish, and the dev has said that he's working on it, so it's certainly something i'm going to be looking forward to. Already wishlisted it as well
