Hello hello! I am JapaniKatti, more familiarly known as JK or Marisa.
I decided to start writing about my journey in beating (mostly) just my steam backlog!
I have a bunch of games in other platforms as well, but I figured it would be easier to just start with Steam and work my way through!
Even though I say that, I have a few games ongoing from other platforms as well.
My long term goal is to 100% my backlog fully, but I often revisit games that I have already played multiple times
to cope with the never-ending list of games. I plan on writing a review for each game I beat, which I will also share on steam.
However, I'm not really going to go back to post about every single game I've completed so far, unless someone specifically asks for it.
Please feel free to comment on here about my completions and give feedback on my writing if you like.
I am not a native English speaker, so my writing is not going to be perfect.

Well. I can now confidently say that I have played through Divinity: Original Sin - Enhanced Edition fully and I enjoyed most of it.
In this game you get to gather party members and customize your party to your liking. No matter if you play this alone or with a friend,
you get to discuss your decisions with your companions, AI and the other player as well. The turn based combat is amazing and intricate,
making you plan every move to the T.
You play as a young Source Hunter, whose job is to rid the world of those who use the foulest of magics. The journey starts of
as a simple murder investigation, but unravels to a worldwide disaster that affects the very fabric of time and space as well.
It is up to you and your companions to save the world. This game really impressed me and kept me hooked till the very end.
The story is really deep and immersive, even though there are parts that are very obvious and predictable. "Yet another basic Fantasy world" they say.
Well yes, and? It has been expertly crafted, which is all we can ask for these days, as fantasy worlds pop up left and right.
Rivellon is just original enough to make it interesting, even though it uses some common tropes within it's world.
The gameplay is very, very tactical, and some fights can last up to forty five minutes at times.
Positioning, making sure you use potions and spells at the optimal moment, making sure you are well prepared for a fight; all of these play a key role
to success in this game. One single mistake can make you loose the battle and your companions. A lot of the game is based in dialogue as well;
If you aren’t one for reading massive amounts of text (or listening to them), then you will probably want to avoid playing this game,
as there is a butt load of text and dialogue to be found.
Graphics and visuals are absolutely fantastic! Lighting is so good and models and spell effects are fantastic.
There are many areas in the game that are immersive and feel like they have been lovingly made, making sure every little detail looks good and immersive.
The special effects are particularly gorgeous to look at and never get tiring. Sound effects and music is also usually great.
Sure there's one or two tracks that aren't suitable, but almost all of it is pleasant to listen to and some are particularly lovely.
There was a few points that I wanted to bring up, that weren't all that great and kind of made me want to just stop playing.
The dialogue choice disputes were very annoying when playing alone and were quite tedious. If an AI is set for a character,
they will try to enforce decisions whenever they can. This is a problem because all disputes are settled with a game of rock-paper-scissors,
which is ultimately a luck based game of choice. Sometimes the decisions were substantial enough that if the dispute was failed,
I was forced to load a previous save, to get the choice I wanted. I learned quickly to save before dialogue when doing quests, so I was always prepared.
Another point that was pretty useless to me was the crafting. Crafting was an unnecessary mechanic which resulted in my inventory getting filled up
with crafting materials which require a lot of extra management. It felt like crafting was shoehorned in,
because it was popular at the time and it wasn't thought out completely.
Taking all of these points into consideration, I do think the game is very good and I would recommend it for sure.
Just be ready for a lot of back and forth, and repeating and reading.

TAISHO x ALICE is a fairytale visual novel in which YOU must save your Prince Charming!
You will take on the role of the fairytale heroine in order to rehabilitate your chosen love interest and guide him to his "happily ever after"!
This game is exactly what it promised! You play the role of a quirky heroine, who is witty, sarcastic and lovable!
She is exactly what you want from a otome game heroine! She was unfortunately not voice acted,
even though most of the other characters were. It was quite sad and made the experience a little less fun.
The game starts where you meet a boy named Alice, whose personality is somewhat problematic.
He is very rude, loud and annoying, and talks badly of the main character for some apparent reason.
I wasn't really a fan of him, and I feel like the game would have been much better without him there.
It just felt like he was forced into the story for no reason.
Both of the routes, for Red Riding Hood and Cinderella, were interesting and not as predictable as you would think!
Both of their personalities were written exceptionally well, and the routes were very much enjoyable.
There were twists and turns in the stories that I didn't predict and it was really fun to read through!
I have no hesitation in recommending this game to any otome or visual novel fans, although, I would personally wait for a discount,
since the price for two routes seems a little excessive. The artstyle is good, the stories are interesting, and the translation is great.
If you believe you will enjoy this game, I would recommend it wholeheartedly!

TAISHO x ALICE continues on in episode 2 with the same heroine from the previous episode,
just with two different "prince charmings" for you to save this time. Please be advised that this episode deals with
more mature themes than the last episode, including mental illness, self-harm, suicidal idealization, drug addiction and sexual assault.
The prologue is pretty much the exact same as the previous episode, which kinda made me wonder why it was even included.
To me it seems silly to assume people would buy and play episode 2 before going to episode 1 first.
My opinion of the boy, Alice, who you meet in the prologue, didn't really change, as he was as annoying and useless as in the previous episode.
I kinda understood more why he was added though, as I was playing through the routes for the characters.
He is there to be a common, combining factor between all of the characters, always giving advice when you least expect it.
This episode was definitely not what I expected. At first I was slightly disappointed to see settings different from the first part.
I was eager to romance Kaguya as my trusted servant and friend, alas... almost all relationships, occupations and connections between characters
were changed, I assume they chose to do it this way, since in the prologue you are entering a different realm, so making everything different,
but still using the same characters, is easier.
If I were completely honest, I didn't enjoy this episode as much as I enjoyed the first one. I was expecting to like this one more actually,
since I read some things about it being darker than the previous episode, but I wasn't aware just how dark it was actually going to be.
Then again, I think the biggest issue I had with both routes was that all of the plot points happened way too immediately
with no character development or story build-up at all.
It also felt like the heroine wasn't herself in this episode, I think she acted way differently, which made choosing some choices a little bit difficult
and often resulted in bad endings, as there were a lot more of them here. The devs were obviously gunning for the element of surprise in this episode,
which usually works well for characters that are romancable, but when the surprises involve the heroine's personality, then it gets rather confusing.
As the protagonist, shouldn't I be aware of my own personality?
Overall however, I still think this game is worth it, even though they changed a lot of things. The first episode was better, but this one was worth it as well.
As I did in the episode 1 review, I still recommend you getting this game at a sale rather than at full price.

Firstly, whilst the first and second episodes can be played in any order,
I highly recommend you to play both of the entries before going into episode three.
The reason for that is that there is a spoiler available in this episode that might spoil the experience for the previous games.
Honestly I am not sure what to say. This was probably the most mind blowing experiences I have had in otome games up to date.
The game went from witty, lovey-dovey and cute to dark and depressing and then to absolutely confusing, interesting and weird,
where you get closer to the truth behind everything and it is just simply mind blowing.
I'm usually pretty decent at guessing what's gonna happen in stories and all, but this episode took me by total surprise - but oh no,
it is not pulling things out of it's ass at all, the hints are there in plain sight, but you don't realize it until they become obvious,
as the story tells you everything. This episode focused a lot more on the story behind the scene part of the game rather than the romance,
though there were some good parts that got me all giddy as well.
Like in the previous two games, Episode 3 starts with the heroine finding herself in the dark world once again.
There, she meets the badmouthed boy named Alice. I was still not a fan of this boy, and I was very hard against his character,
but after playing the whole episode through, I learned why he is actually important and he truly is, even though he is annoying as a character.
In this episode you can't choose which of the characters you want to go for, so you start the game off with Snow White's route.
His route is full of mystery and doesn't really focus too much on romance. The story here is very quick moving
and you find yourself hooked on to the mystery of it all! This route can get a little emotional and dark, but it was still very good.
I was not a huge fan of Snow White to begin with, but I grew more fond of him through his route.
After you play through Snow White's route fully, you start a new game and start The Wizard's route.
The Wizard's route felt like there was no romance at all, BUT there was a really really good reason for it that was revealed at the end.
The Happy Ending you receive is not what it sounds like, but is still satisfying. I don't think I can say much about his route,
as it is heavily spoiler related, but it was definitely really good.
I believe this game is highly worth it for the plot that it unravels, but I don't recommend playing this episode as the only episode you play.
I would recommend getting one of the other previous episodes first, then this one and as I previously mentioned,
I still think the prices for these games are not good, so get this one at a sale as well.

Absolutely fantastic journey, this game. There were so many good moments, so many twists and turns.
This final chapter, this epilogue, was the perfect end for the story. It explained everything so well and now all of it made sense.
Unfortunately, I fear as though this series has just ruined otome games forever for me.
No other otome game will compare to the emotions I felt while reading this series.
I know this review is going to end up shorter than my last episode reviews,
but that is simply because there is not much to be said for what was already said. However, I wish to give you my ranking of the love interests,
from favorite to least favorite: Kaguya, Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, Wizard, Gretel and Snow White.
Even though I ranked Snow White as my least favorite, I still loved him and his route a lot!
They were all very good.
Final words from me, I would tell you that you absolutely should play all of the episodes back to back,
that is how I played these games and it made sure you didn't forget anything in-between, so all the twists and revelations made sense fully.
I would still say, get these games at a discount, not at full price.

As a major improvement from the first title in both storytelling and gameplay, The Witcher 2 marks a milestone not only for CD Projekt RED,
but a milestone for the gaming scene in general. Too often a game preaches that choices matter and despite that,
regardless of what you choose, the outcome is the same. Witcher 2 puts you back in control of Geralt of Rivia; Except this time,
the consequences of your actions merit even greater twists and deeper turns and the choices you make affect how the story unravels in front of you.
The game is separated into three chapters each with their own main area along with a handful of side-quests.
These areas are structured and paced well, allowing room for exploration without straying too far from the main storyline.
The decisions you make along the way directly influence the narrative and can have a dramatic effect on the rest of the game.
For example; decisions made in the first chapter can completely change the second, allowing plenty of room for re-playability.
The game also features multiple endings, which vary based on your choices.
I went into this game straight after finishing Witcher 1 for the first time.
I had my struggles with the first title, but when I jumped into the second game, I was pleasantly surprised of the improvements.
I modded my game, since I am very much a gamer who wants my game to look the best it can, and boy was I not disappointed.
Even without the mods, this game was a great improvement visually, but with mods, it was even more glorious.
Only thing that I was a little sad about, was that I couldn't be true neutral like a witcher should be!
In Witcher 1 the neutrality could be achieved at least to some degree, but even there,
they failed to bring out the true neutrality choice that should be prevalent for a witcher.
In Witcher 2, they decided to just hint at neutrality in some dialogue choices you could do,
but most of those choices didn't really affect the important bits, and you were not allowed true neutrality.
I believe they did well with portraying Geralt fighting for the lesser evil however.

They say Gothic is the series that laid foundation to many series today and they praise it to heavens.
I would say that the game is good considering when it came out, but sadly I was not having a good time with it.
This was my first time playing the game, and before this I had never heard of the games.
Firstly there was a lot of problems to get the game to work for me to even play it.
I managed to run it, which is more than most, but the game still kept crashing quite often.
It would seem Steam sells this game broken and I have read that it works better on other platforms.
I downloaded mods that made the game bearable to say the least, but it was still very annoying.
Secondly, it's a very, very corny adventure in a game with atleast an original setting (prison colony surrounded by a one-way magic barrier).
There's a lot of rough touches to admire about it for sure, like how weapon animations change as you get better training,
but I still think it's very rough around the edges and even for an old game I don't think it's good.
I have you know, I actually completed the game fully. I am a gamer who doesn't like leaving games unfinished, even if I don't enjoy them.
I am glad I managed to finish the game, but I will never, ever, touch the game again. I do hope the other Gothic games are more tolerable.

Is The Witcher III on your list of things to play? I can understand not wanting to dive into it straight away, but I hope you get to it eventually. The base game is excellent, of course, but the Blood and Wine DLC is where it's at--a nearly perfect convergence of story and gameplay, with some of the best side quests of all time. Just thinking about that makes my knees weak. 😜

I have actually started Witcher 3 already, I just didn't update the list yet (getting to it atm).
I have seen a lot of gameplay for W3 however, so I am afraid I've been mostly spoiled.
ofc there is some stuff I don't remember, but I know a lot. Very excited to play Blood and Wine myself though.

Vampires, Romance and for Free?! What more could you ask for!
This game was absolutely amazing and I was so baffled on how it could be free,
but it just made playing this game even more sweeter!
The art style is exactly the style I am fond of the most, detailed yet soft, with a hint of realism.
The character designs of both Abigail (The Main Character) and Lucius (The Vampire) are very well done and thought out,
you could tell some of their personality from their clothes right of the bat.
The writing was great, thoughtful, and evocative and it was done so well that I just wished for more each time I read forward.
There was a whole world built in a relatively short amount of time and that world was intriguing to say the least.
My only few gripes with the game was that at times it felt like there were not really much choice give for the player,
it could have been just a novel with pictures and the second was that I wished there would have been
scene artworks like in general otome/visual novel games.

I haven't played the first "Ever Seen A Cat?" game,
but I heard it is very good, so decided to get the second one for myself.
It's a lovely little game, with short gameplay (or long if you have troubles finding the cats),
and the soundtrack is very lovely. It's a simple hidden object game with cute cats.
I especially love that you need to play the stages again to see all of the cats.
Simple, cute and fun!

Another great game from Devcats!
In this game you need to find hidden cats and pet each one of them, even the ones in hiding out of sight!
A lovely experience of a hidden object type of game, with lovely soundtrack and cute looking cats!
Who wouldn't want to live in a building full of cats?

A very beautifully made game.
It is an absolute wonder how amazing of a story can be told without any words,
just through images and emotion given through those images.
This game did make me cry, I admit. Though that usually isn't hard to do.
The visuals in this game are very stunning and I would have loved
to had played the game for longer, sadly, it is quite short.
Eitherway, it is a great little game worth the purchase.

It's like a novel with images and no gameplay, so it's a little sad, but it isn't bad at all.
It's well written and interesting, sometimes the art is a little weird and doesn't seem natural,
though what would be natural about a vampire bat boning a woman lol.
Kind of would have wished that there was more to it though.
Still, it's a decent NSFW game.

Bloodshore is a FMV game about a televised battle royale between high-profile streamers, entertainers and death row inmates.
You take control of Nick, who is a washed-up actor trying to win this bloody cash prize, but he has a secret!
The story of this FMV game is a rather fun concept that has been done already many times by many movies and tv-series,
but Bloodshore tried to make it a little more interesting with some twists and turns. In my opinion this FMV game is like a B-tier movie,
it's bad, but it knows it's bad and it makes it good. There is a lot of humor in it that makes it even more entertaining.
There is a lot of bloody and gory scenes, but they are all very fake and not all that well done, but I think that adds to the charm of it.
This game made me realize that every B-tier movie should be turned into a FMV game, they would bring a lot of joy for everyone!
The cinematography did an okay job of stimulating emotions, often with the use of close-up shots depicting gore,
or hiding things from view that you want to see, creating suspense. I also appreciated that they didn't just use over the shoulder camera angles
when having conversations between characters. Throughout the game there are also interruptions from the game host and the talk show host,
all of which are cleverly superimposed onto TV screens and sell the illusion of those cheap, tacky, often American reality show TV breaks.
They tried to make scenes that looked like people were watching the show on their TVs, phones and computer screens,
but I feel like those scenes fell short and the reactions felt very out of place and not all that integrated to the main scenes.
As a FMV game there were things that I was hoping the game would have, that it didn't. A skip scene button was there,
but it was mediocre and didn't always work when you needed it the most. Playing this game to 100% was a pain without it,
because you had to watch scenes you've already seen multiple times in a row, which, as you would guess,
gets a little tiresome after the second time. There was also no proper save game option,
which was a pain when there were scenes with random outcomes.
In conclusion, I believe it's a decent enough FMV game, but it has it's flaws. I enjoyed it, but that might not be the same for everyone.
If you can get it at a good discount, then go for it, but I wouldn't purchase it at a full price.

Pretty and short little game about a mother bear trying to find her lost cub.
The soundtrack is beautiful, it sounds a little melancholic, but fits the wintery scene very well.
The low poly graphics look well made and fit the game style.
There is little to no game mechanics, except for a few very easy puzzles, so it's basically just a walking simulator.
That aside, collecting the little essences was a little annoying, especially because the sound of you collecting them
was very loud and you couldn't turn that down from the settings. Very cute otherwise and the cub was adorable.

In a world stuck on digital connections, the only way Holland, the main character,
is going to get through this breakup with her sanity intact is to go analog!
Land of Screens is a short story game about ditching the world of social media
to focus on more real world connections with your friends and family.
You play as Holland, a girl who lives in a world dominated by the screens of our phones
and the hooks of social media, a world that is very similar to our own.
This game is such a cute, vibrant and surprisingly relevant game,
that captures the essence of today's culture of social media being such a priority in our lives
and the anxiety that comes along with it. The game's message is pretty obvious,
but it definitely isn't fully anti-internet/social media/phone, but it's one that is supported by some excellent writing,
characters and art that makes it seem less like a hammer to the head and more like a light nudging in a certain direction.
I liked Holland as a main character and she was very relatable. However, it felt like she was being slightly hypocritical.
She gets upset that after their broke up, which was apparently something she knew was coming,
her ex starts dating a new girl almost right away but very close to that happening,
she went on a date herself with a random guy she meets at a hotel lobby.
I guess it just felt to me like she was doing the exact same thing that got her upset to begin with.
The soundtrack was absolutely banging
and I would loved to have heard the band, A Pony for Princess, as a real band.
Their music was great ;).
In the end, this game is absolutely a fantastic indie game, and a definite keeper.
The game might be a little on the shorter side, but definitely worth it!

I played this game for the first time 10 years ago with my siblings.
It was such a fun game to play back then, and I might be biased by nostalgia, but I still think this game is great!
Some people seem to have problems with the game crashing etc, but I had no problems with the game and it run smoothly.
It would have been great if there was controller support for the game, as I feel like this game would be more fun to play with a controller.
This game is a wonderful old platformer arcade game and its 100% worth the money.

Cat Dungeon is a fairly simple looking, Sokoban styled puzzle game
that has you playing as a cute little orange cat, trying to get through the stages to escape the dungeon.
To manage escaping this dungeon, variety of objects must be moved, levers pulled, teleporters used
and keys collected in the 30 different stages this game offers.
The difficulty increases as you go forward, where the beginning levels can be quite easy,
and the end levels more difficult. There are some stages in-between that are either easier or harder,
but otherwise it's pretty straight forward difficulty increase.
The style of the menu and the stages is fairly simple pixel style with clear ways to find where to go and what to do.
There is no way to change the controls, but I don't think that is needed, since the gameplay only requires the arrow keys to be used.
The steam page also shows that this game has "full controller support" but sadly that did not work for me and my xbox one controller.
Despite that little hurdle with the controller and the fact that I had to wait for a guide
to do few of the stages (as I was too stupid to figure them out), the game is very much enjoyable and fun puzzle game.
The developer also seems to be keen on improving their game and making it better!
For this reason, I do recommend the game even at it's full price.

When The Past Was Around is a short and bittersweet narrative point-and-click puzzle game about newfound love,
heartbreak and learning to move on and let go. The story is beautiful and sad, told without words, just pictures, scenes and music.
It made me very emotional and got me bawling my eyes out at the end.
The soundtrack is perfect, even though a little repetitive, but it gets better near the end.
I am also in love with violins and this game just made me love them even more!
I also like to point out that the other main character is an owl man, a very beautiful owl man
who looks like the perfect boyfriend, which further confirms my suspicions of being a furry all along.
The puzzles were relatively easy to do, so there was nothing difficult about the game.
I would 100% recommend this game to people who like emotional stories.
